Can You Make This Unit Stronger?

Cover.png
In Splinterlands, not every unit needs high damage to be useful. Some units exist to make a strategy stronger rather than carry the battle alone. These cards often look weak on paper, which is fair, but they can still become strong in the right situation. Understanding their role is the key to improving your win rate over time. Kanaaq Miner is one of those units that many players overlook. All of his stats are low. Kanaaq Miner's damage is low and his health is also low which makes him easy to ignore. When used in the correct rule, Kanaaq Miner can improve an already existing strategy and in Frontier Mode, this is a really strong addition.

Summarized Lore

Panopia is a loose gathering of nomadic tribes that roam the Northeast Coastal Steppes of the Wild Northeast. Their lives are shaped by constant movement, harsh winds, and land that offers little mercy. Descended from Azmarean roots, these tribes follow old seasonal paths, learning when to move and when to stay through long years of trial. Survival is not luck for them, but routine built from experience.

Among these travelers, the Kanaaq stand out for their grit and clever ways. Formed of ironwood goblins, they build camps fast and disappear just as quickly, carving shelters into hills and stone. Every goblin has a task, but the miners are among the most important. They dig deep for ore that keeps the tribe alive through trade, defense, and war. Their tunnels may look rough, but each strike and support is deliberate, passed down through generations. And when danger finds them underground or out in the open, a Kanaaq miner proves they are never easy prey.

Stats

Kanaaq Miner is a low mana Sneak unit that can improve your Sneak strategy especially in Frontier Mode battles. With only 1 attack, he is not meant to carry fights, but instead excels at supporting other units with Sneak and filling lineup slots efficiently. He works best as another damage unit that helps with adding damage and blocking other enemy Sneak attacks in certain rules.

Abilities

IconNameDescription
Sneak.pngSneakTargets the last Unit on the enemy Team instead of the first Unit.
Sneak.png is a match because Sneak works best when multiple units attack the same backline target. Kanaaq Miner fits naturally in when combined with Saltwater Mage in Frontier Mode. Even though his damage is low, the two Sneak attacks can quickly add up than with just Saltwater Mage alone. This makes him a viable addition on certain occassions because he can add more to the Sneak that Saltwater Mage can do.
Taunt.png is a counter because Taunt is the strongest counter to Sneak because it redirects all attacks to a single unit. This completely removes the value of sneak ability. Enemy Taunt can protect weak backline units from your Sneak attacks. With the low damage, it would be really bad for Kanaaq Miner to be up against Taunt units. Fortunately, there's no units with Sneak ability in Frontier Mode so you can only encounter this problem in the other modes.

Good Rules to Consider

IconNameReason
Equalizer.pngEqualizerThe initial Health of all Units is equal to that of the Units on either team with the highest base Health.
Kanaaq Miner becomes much stronger in Equalizer rule because his low health is raised to match the highest health unit on the battle. This allows him to survive far longer than usual and act as a blocker for enemy Sneak attacks. Instead of dying quickly, he can soak more hits and protect more valuable backline units while still contributing a little bit of damage.
Explosive Weaponry.pngExplosive WeaponryAll units have Blast (deals an additional 50% damage to units adjacent to the target, rounded up).
Sneak combined with Blast creates strong backline combo even with low damage. Kanaaq Miner still triggers 1 Blast damage to adjacent enemies every time he attacks. Over multiple rounds, this low damage can still help his fellow Sneak units. This helps you destroy the enemy formation.
Blood Sunder.pngBlood and SunderAll units have Corrosive Ward (-2 to attacker’s armor and maximum armor when hit by a melee attack).
Kanaaq Miner is unaffected by Corrosive Ward because he has no armor to begin with. While other melee units lose armor from attacking, he continues to function normally. This gives him a relative advantage simply by ignoring the downside of the rule, Blood and Sunder.

Bad Rules to Think Twice

IconNameReason
Thick Skinned.pngThick SkinnedAll units have Shield.
Thick Skinned rule gives all units Shield which heavily reduces damage from melee attacks. Kanaaq Miner’s 1 damage is fully canceled by Shield and makes it 0. This makes him completely useless in battle when you play with this rule in play. If you have Thick Skinned rule in your battle, do not use Kanaaq Miner. It's just a waste of space at this point.
Reverse Speed.pngReverse SpeedUnits with the lowest Speed attack first and have the highest chance of evading attacks.
With a speed of 4, Kanaaq Miner performs poorly under Reverse Speed rule. He attacks later in the round and misses more often than units with a lower speed than him. This removes any early advantage Kanaaq Miner have and makes his already low damage even less reliable. You can still use Kanaaq Miner and he may still hit some of his attacks but Kanaaq Miner has a real disadvantage than other units while playing in this rule.
Fog of War.pngFog of WarUnits lose the Sneak and Snipe abilities.
Fog of War rule disables Sneak which is his only ability. Without Sneak, Kanaaq Miner loses his role entirely. He becomes a weak front attacker with no advantage. If you are planning to use him as a frontline tank, you should pick every other unit instead since this will just die in a couple of attacks.

Link to battle

In this Frontier Mode battle, I am using Kanaaq Miner in combination with Saltwater Mage to deal with the enemy from the back first. Since there's Equalizer modifier here, everyone is still a tank but attacking the back line is still better to be targeted first because that's when the huge attack units will be. No one will be expecting a Sneak strategy in an Equalizer modifier and that is exactly what happened in this battle. I attacked and targeted the enemy Mystic Scaleweaver from the back first and with that unit dying, I had the advantage in terms of damage and that won me the game.
