Do You Know Ulundin Overseer?

A few days ago, I did some post on Ulundin Overseer. Even though the battle was good and I picked it because draws are very uncommon in Splinterlands, I feel like I made a little bit of injustice and didn't show how to properly use Ulundin Overseer. So, here we are for round 2 and I will show you how good Ulundin Overseer can be.
Ulundin Overseer is a very strange unit at first glance because it has no attack at all. Many players only look at the unit's attack and immediately think this unit is useless or too passive. In real battles though, I really like Ulundin Overseer. The plays you can do are a lot and his tankiness overshines the demerit of not having any attacks. With very high armor and health at all levels, this unit is built to stand in front and take hits for a long time. It allows your team to get protected as your damage dealers make way through your enemy's lineup.
When battles drag on, Ulundin Overseer's high durability start to matter more than any other stats. The longer your tank can delay the deaths, the longer you can keep your team alive. This kind of unit is more about game knowledge. Sometimes, a unit with no attack is more useful than one with an attack in different situations.
Stats
| Rarity: Common | Mana: 11 | no attack damage |
|---|---|---|
| Armor: 10 | Health: 17 | Speed: 1 |
- Ulundin Overseer is best described as a pure sponge tank. His role is just to accept and soak damage as your team does their job. With 11 mana cost, it is an expensive unit in terms of mana. The stats, though, justify it by having a huge amount of defensive stats. With 10 armor and 17 health at max level, this Ulundin is a massive wall for the enemy regardless of their attack type. Even without a natural way to attack, this unit excels at absorbing damage and protecting your team. The low speed is not a problem since Ulundin Overseer is not meant to act first or deal damage. Its value comes from staying alive and those huge health pools can definitely help you with a few combos with other units.
Abilities
Flank: At the beginning of battle, if this unit is in the first position, the unit in the second position gains reach.
Flank is the core reason why Ulundin Overseer is so useful despite having no attack. This ability allows the unit behind Ulundin Overseer to attack from the second position, even if that melee unit normally cannot. This effectively gives Reach ability to the other melee unit placed directly behind it. Because of this, you can place strong melee damage dealers safely in second position without losing damage. This is very strong when your second unit would normally have low health despite having an amazing damage. One thing I want to mention is that not because the unit has the ability, you have to use it. Ulundin Overseer's Flank ability can be good but not at all times. There are times where you can just ignore it and use a magic damage unit and just use Ulundin Overseer as a wall. Make sure your lineup is solid and you don't need to min-max every ability your units have if it would destroy the synergy on your team.
Battle
This battle had Blood and Sunder rule which gave me a small headache in the planning stage. I was planning to do somewhat similar to the enemy which was to use Commander Slade as one of my tanks. I switched to Ulundin Overseer in order to protect my tank against Corrosive Ward from Blood and Sunder rule. If my Ulundin Overseer cannot attack then it also won't get reflect damage from Corrosive Ward. This worked really good especially with the combination of Anasth Soothsayer's Tank Heal and Conclave Tracker's Repair. This also worked amazing as the enemy's Commander Slade's Enfeeble was also useless. You cannot reduce a unit's attack if they don't have any attack in the first place.
Some Bonus Combos
High health works very well with Tank Heal, because healing scales better when the unit has a large health pool to begin with. While Ulundin Overseer does not have Tank Heal itself, pairing it with a Tank Heal support unit can make it extremely hard to kill. High armor is also very strong when combined with Repair. Since Repair restores armor every round, Ulundin Overseer has a lot of armor to benefit from it. This turns it into a true tank that your enemy will have a lot of problem trying to go through if they don't have any form of bypassing your tanks.
Resurrect is another very strong synergy with Ulundin Overseer. When Resurrect triggers, the unit comes back with one health but full armor which is huge for a unit that relies on armor more than damage. This allows Ulundin Overseer to block melee and range attacks all over again even after dying once.
The new Archon, Elowen Sylphie, makes this even stronger by granting Resurgence. Resurgence restores all health and armor which means Ulundin Overseer can come back at full power and continue tanking for your team. Once this archon finally lands, I think Splinterlands will be having a lot of fun with this new archon and the Elowen Sylphie - Ulundin Overseer will be on the front of that.
