Today, I want to celebrate Thanksgiving in Splinterlands by creating some cute art in theme of Thanksgiving. I just want to tell you in advance that this would be a little scuffed because I was juggling between helping my niece and my cousin on their school work while working on this. I'll still make it the best of my abilities to produce something that looks good and doesn't look rushed.

Today, I want to celebrate Thanksgiving in Splinterlands by creating some cute art in theme of Thanksgiving. I’ve been wanting to make a fun little piece for the holiday and I figured this would be a good chance to showcase both my love for Splinterlands and my love for drawing. I’ll be honest though, this whole thing is a little scuffed because I was juggling between helping my niece and my sister with their school work while squeezing some time to work on this drawing. It felt like every few minutes, I had to stop, answer something, do some Canva magic for them, then jump back into the drawing like nothing happened.

Even with all that, I still wanted to do my best and make something that looks good and not rushed. Thanksgiving is a cozy holiday for me and I thought it would be nice to bring a lil bit of that warmth into Splinterlands even if the process behind the scenes was kind of messy. So, this art that I did became a mix of chaos, multitasking, and creativity all rolled into one, happening all at the same time. In the end, I just wanted to make something fun, lighthearted and a little silly to share with everyone for Thanksgiving.

Drawing Process

Concept:

For the main concept of this Thanksgiving art, I should have a roasted turkey. Splinterlands doesn't have a turkey unit but I found out something that looked... almost similar, the Furious Chicken.

Since we now have the dish, we need a chef and I found someone who would be willing to do the deal. This is Octavia Shadowmeld from the Death Element from Chaos Legion. She looked suspicious and looked like someone who is up for the job.

Lineart:

I'm starting with the upside down FUrious Chicken and making him a little stubbier because who wants turkey that doesn't have a lot of meat?

Then, I had everything into the chibi style which is the one I am more familiar at. I had Octavia Shadowmeld look like she would be cooking the Furious Chicken. One thing I would like to rant while making this is that I didn't realize Octavia SHadowmeld is hard to draw. There's so much little things that you need to add on her model and I have so much respect at the artist who did her original art.

I was able to put in most of the needed details but not all because this is a chibi style and in this style, you don't need to be as detailed as possible as long as you can make the model or character recognizable. On that aspect, I think I did a pretty good job making a good looking chibi of Octavia Shadowmeld.

I also added some random stuff on the table to fill in the blank space in the drawing. I did not add a background because I want the focus on the characters and not the environment.

Base Color

The Lineart part is actually the longest that took to make this because of the itty bitty stuff that I needed to add here and there. So, we'll now add the first layer of the colors which is the base one, just filling in everything. This base color will act also as the guide for the shadows. To keep this as close as possible to the original, I used the color scheme of the original art, both Octavia Shadowmeld and Furious Chicken.

Add Details

Next is adding the shadows, highlights and other things. Adding these make it look more alive and interesting. For the shadows and highlights, I don't have a specific color scheme and I just do it by the ear. For those, I always use the Krita slider which you can find below the color picker area. If you are not familiar with it, it's here:

Oh, and yes, if you're not familiar with my old works, I use Krita for all of my drawings and art. It's an easier tool for me to use than Photoshop so it's my tool of choice and Krita is free for all those who are wondering.

Bonus: New Fire Tricks

I tried something new which resulted in a good experiment. When creating fire, you go from red to brightest, right? If you want a guide, just follow the start of the rainbow. Red > Orange > Yellow > White. Do that for the fire and color from the outside to the inside.

Now for the added trick, get your brush tool and set it to 50% opacity like this:
Opacity 50.PNG

Then, set it to your desired brush size. Starting from the second layer of the fire, just follow it with 50% opacity. In order for this trick to work, you MUST do it in one stroke since two strokes on the same line makes it 100%, similar to when you color it normally. Repeat until you get to the white inside part. You can also do the same technique to the lineart of the fire to reduce the thickness of the fire but of course, you'll just be using the red part this time. See the difference below.

This is the normal one, which is what I normally do.

Fire 2.PNG
This is the new technique playing with the opacity.

The fire with the opacity resulted in a much more softer fire which is what you want.

Bonus: Liquid Tricks

Using the same method as above, I tried doing it with the liquid at the back of Octavia Shadowmeld. I would say it's a hit and miss. Here's what it looked like:
Liquid 1.PNG

It created a soft feeling surrounding the clump of liquid which looked good. I honestly tried it on the eyes but it didn't look good so I changed it.

Bonus: Eyes Tricks

This is the last trick I used in this art. Since the Liquid/Fire trick didn't work as much as I wanted, I went back to Photoshop to do this. Unlike in Krita, Adobe Photoshop's brush feels more like a spray or a natural gradient if you put the hardness to 0. This one looks really nice when you want to show the glow in the eyes but it's only applicable after the whole process which means you will only see this part on the final output as a final touch and not the timelapse.
