This Battle is a Slugfest

Cover.png Splinterlands have characters that can be both a tank and deal damage at the same time. These are units that can hold their ground even when the fight gets messy and unpreductable. They don’t rely on tricks but just simple stat check and a bit of stubbornness and in battles where a tank that can multi-role is required, these kinds of units slowly turn the fight to your side.

This unit I am about to present to you is something used by a lot of players but I don't think they understand why. It looks strong, the stats and abilities look decent so they add them to the team. But I don't think players, including me, have put this one through a microscope. What makes this unit feel strong, which rules you have to avoid using it in and which rules it would matter the most.

Today, I want to talk about a unit that plays in that same way, only a bit crazier.

Lore

Deep within the Drybone Badlands, there lives a species of giant sharks found nowhere else on Praetoria. A surge of dirt and rock in the distance, and a single fin rises from the earth and cleaves a path toward its prey. You can try to run, but there is no escape.

Better to stand still. Don’t move. Don’t even breathe. Because once the Drybone megalodon knows where you are, it will hunt you down, erupt from the ground, and swallow you whole. Then it will vanish again into the earth of the badlands, leaving only a memory of its savagery—if there is anyone left alive to remember.

Stats

Drybone Megalodon Stats.PNG

Drybone Megalodon is a strong frontline tank because it has high damage, solid armor and big health letting it stay in the fight while dealing good melee hits. Its mix of Flank, Retaliate and Thorns makes enemies take damage even when they try to attack it. This creates steady pressure keeping the enemies on their toes. Drybone Megalodon works well with abilities like Inspire and Amplify because both abilities increase the value of its stats or other abilities.

This unit also plays a vital role in coordinating with other units. Drybone Megalodon is strong on its own but will not hold a candle against a well thought out lineup. Instead, a good partner in crime right behind him is a requirement. Drybone Megalodon is a two-unit combo where he works best when another melee unit is accompanied right behind him to maximize his abilities.

Description

flank.png

Flank

At the beginning of battle, if this unit is in the first position, the unit in the second position gains reach.

inspire.png is a match because Flank gives a melee unit beside Drybone Megalodon a way to reach the backline and Inspire increases not only this unit's melee attack but also that unit’s melee attack. This makes their Flank attacks hit harder and helps break the enemy tank faster. The combo also turns Drybone Megalodon into a great partner for any melee-focused lineup.

Thorns.png is a counter because Since both Drybone Megalodon and the unit benefitting from Flank are melee units. They take Thorns damage every time they hit. This makes Flank much more risky because the attacking unit supported by Flank means taking free damage every swing. Both the unit benefitting from Flank and Drybone Megalodon itself are both melee units and suffers from Thorns.

retaliate.png

Retaliate

When hit with a melee attack, Units with retaliate have a 50% chance of immediately attacking their attacker.

True Strike.png is a match because Retaliate can miss if the enemy is fast and has high speed or has Dodge but True Strike makes every counterattack land. When paired together, Drybone Megalodon can consistently deal melee attacks and retaliate with no wasted turns. This gives Drybone Megalodon more value especially in melee matchups where enemies can hit it many times.

Dodge.png is a counter because Dodge increases the chance for incoming melee attacks to miss and Retaliate is still treated like a normal melee hit which would be affected as well. This means Drybone Megalodon can waste normal attacks and many Retaliate triggers on enemies it cannot connect with. In these fights, Retaliate loses a lot of value as it hits the air.

Thorns.png

Thorns

When hit with a Melee attack, does 2 Meele damage back to the attacker.

Amplify.png is a match because Amplify increases Thorns damage by 1 which makes every enemy melee hit hurt more. This turns Drybone Megalodon's Thorns into a real danger for any melee attacker trying to break through its armor and health. It also forces enemies to think twice before sending fast but low health melee units into it.

Deflect.png is a counter because Deflect prevents Thorns damage when a melee unit is attacking making Thorns useless against them. This removes one of Drybone Megalodon’s biggest defensive strengths because attackers can now hit safely. When the enemy team has multiple Deflect units, Drybone Megalodon’s Thorns damage disappears.

Good Rules to Consider

Reason

Aim True.png

Aim True

All units gain True Strike (attacks will never miss).

Aim True helps Drybone Megalodon land every melee hit which increases its consistency. This also eliminates any problems with Retaliate. Retaliate also becomes more reliable since missing is no longer possible. This rule lets Drybone Megalodon pressure enemies without worrying about speed or Dodge. The partner with the Flank ability also gains the similar advantage especially since this unit is also melee and can miss. That miss would be important to bring down the enemy frontline fast.

Up to Eleven.png

Up to Eleven

All units have Amplify (increases damage of Retaliate and all Punishment abilities—Corrosive Ward, Magic Reflect, Return Fire, and Thorns—by 1; does not stack).

Drybone Megalodon benefits from Amplify because it increases all Thorns damage it returns. This makes enemies suffer more whenever they hit it with melee attacks. The extra damage helps deal with melee tanks and low-health melee units faster. The only regret in this rule is that it does not stack. Even though you have 6 units on the field and all of them have Amplify from Up to Eleven, just take note that Thorns will only increase by 1 and not 1 per Amplify.

Up Close and Personal.png

Up Close & Personal

Only Units with Melee attack may be used in battles.

Since Drybone Megalodon has Retaliate and Thorns, this rule gives it maximum value. Every attacker hitting it is in a risk and Drybone Megalodon can punish them more often. It turns the whole match into a melee slugfest where Drybone Megalodon reigns supreme. Surprisingly, this rule works best with all of his abilities. The partnered unit with Flank also needs to be a melee unit for Flank to work so Up Close & Personal rule also supports that idea.

Bad Rules to Think Twice

Reason

Unprotected.png

Unprotected

Units do not have any armor and do not get armor from Abilities or Summoner Buffs.

Drybone Megalodon relies partly on its armor to survive and keep using Retaliate and Thorns. When armor is removed, its health gets attacked directly, reducing it too fast. This makes it weaker as a front tank and without any abilities that reduce enemy attacks or makes him tankier, this rule really hurts him bad especially when the enemy have a lot of high damaging melee and range units.

Deflection Shield.png

Deflection Field

All units have Reflection Shield (0 damage from Blast splash damage and Punishment abilities—Corrosive Ward, Magic Reflect, Return Fire, and Thorns).

Thorns loses all value here since attackers can ignore the returned damage. This makes Drybone Megalodon lose one of its strongest ability. Without thorns, Drybone Megalodon becomes easier to deal with and slightly less scary. On the other hand, only melee units are affected by Thorns so if the enemy used mostly magic attacks, playing in this rule or not still wouldn't matter. I also want to point out that Retaliate does not stop or negate Retaliate effects and its damage.

Briar Patch.png

Briar Patch

All units have Thorns (returns 2 damage to attacker when hit by a melee attack)

Drybone Megalodon having Thorns is normally good, but in this rule, enemies also have Thorns. This punishes Drybone Megalodon’s own attacks and the attacks from its Flank partner. Retaliate also becomes a problem since every counterattack that hit triggers Thorns one more time.

Battle

Battle.PNGLink to battle

I was confident to win this battle since my enemy did not maximize their positioning. Melee units can only attack while in the front but it doesn't mean that they can't when they have other abilities that change this interaction. Opportunity and Flank are two of the abilities that make this happen which you can see with my melee units in this battle. Needless to say, while the enemy can only attack with the units in the front, I can have all my units attack which pushes me up in the damage department.
