A necessary defense on the battlefield, meet Queen Mycelia

A good defense is always a good strategy and although it does not guarantee victory in battle, you can be sure that it will bring you closer to achieving it. In this post I'm going to talk about one of my favorite abilities in splinterlands and although it's quite simple, it's very useful and worth having in battles.

The ability I'm going to talk about in this post is Protect and I believe you've already used it or seen your opponent use it in battles. As I mentioned before it is very simple and its function will be to grant +2 shield to all your cards in battles, the shield will be useful to defend your cards from melee and ranged attacks.

To use as an example and also to show in a battle I will use the Queen Mycelia card, which is also one of my favorites in the land deck and it has earned me numerous victories to date.

Who is Queen Mycelia?

Queen Mycelia is a legendary card from the chaos legion edition that belongs to the earth deck, its mana cost is 4, its attack type is magic and it has 4 abilities which are: Protect, Amplify, Triage and Rust.

In this post the focus will only be on the ability Protect and also I will use Queen Mycelia only at level 1 so it will only have the ability Protect, but to better explain all the usefulness of the card I will make a brief summary of its abilities.

Enable Level 1 (Protect)

The Protect ability as I mentioned before will grant your cards +2 shield, remembering that the ability will only be active while Queen Mycelia is in battle, if she is defeated then the ability will disappear and your cards will lose their shield gain.

Enable Level 2 (Amplify)

The Amplify ability will increase the damage dealt by Magic Reflect, Return Fire and Thorns by +1. Remembering that the damage will only increase for your cards that have these abilities, your opponent will not gain this extra damage.

Enable Level 3 (Triage)

The Triage ability will heal the backline card that suffered the most damage in the round, the healing value is 1/3 of the maximum life of the card, and the minimum value is 2. Healing abilities are very useful and make a big difference in battles because they keep their cards in battle longer.

Enable Level 4 (Rust)

The Rust ability is the last of Queen Mycelia and its function is to reduce the shield of the opposing cards by -2, so with the ability Protect you will increase your defenses and with the ability Rust you will reduce your opponent's defenses, this is a great combo to have in battles.

As I mentioned before I will only use Queen Mycelia at level 1 so you will only see her Protect ability in action, but at higher levels Queen Mycelia becomes extremely more powerful and useful in battle.

One last detail about the ability Protect is that it is only useful against melee and ranged attacks, if your opponent has cards with magic attack then they will ignore the shield and attack your card's health directly.

BATTLE

In this battle my strategy was to maintain a good position for my cards and have a strong defense on the frontline and backline because my middle cards had little life.

The battle had 39 available mana and the Melee Mayhem rule.

The Melee Mayhem rule allows melee cards to attack from any position and I used this rule to strengthen my backline by placing Pelacor Mercenary which is an excellent defense to defend in last position. In the first position I used Kron the Undying which can also be used as a defensive card since he has a lot of health and the ability Heal which will heal him for 1/3 of his maximum health per round.

In addition to Kron the Undying and Pelacor Mercenary I also used 2 support cards (Goblin Psychic and Wood Nymph) as support to help heal Kron. Goblin Sorcerer will be my card to attack my opponent's backline and Queen Mycelia will further increase my defenses with her ability Protect.

The battle has started and my opponent chooses the fire deck with the summoner Tarsa, that means his melee cards will gain +1 attack and all his cards will gain +1 life.

On my side, I choose the earth deck with the summoner Obsidian and my choice was correct because my opponent also has a card with the ability Protect, so my cards with magic attack will be very useful since they ignore the shield and attack directly the card life.

My opponent had a fort and that was a big problem but luckily his attack was focused in 2 different directions (frontline and backline) so my Kron didn't take all the damage alone and he managed to have enough time to restore his life with its ability Heal and with the help of my support cards. In the backline, Pelacor Mercenary was defending and he was doing very well since he has the ability Flying which increases by +25% the chances of him dodging melee and ranged attacks from cards that do not have the ability Flying, in addition he has a good amount of life and also shield so it won't be defeated easily.

Although my opponent has a powerful attack I also had great offensive cards and as his shield was useless so it was not difficult to defeat his defenses and after several attacks and without having any cards defeated I managed to achieve victory.
