Splinterlands is rocking it | How to be smart about my semi-modest collection?

avatar

Well, hello Splinterlands! You've been good to me!

A recent airdrop from @splinterlands in the form of SPS tokens and an updated @peakmonsters rental market update, I've been playing around with my Splinterlands collection a bit more than I've done in the past few months, and checking into splinterlands.com almost daily to claim and stake new tokens.

In the past 18 days I've been collecting almost 1500 SPS, which actually currently is worth more than 450$, quite a nice amount of money for an airdrop, right?

Screenshot 2021-08-13 at 13.46.38.png

What happened is:
Owning cards, card packs, DEC, plots and other @splinterlands assets earns you Airdrop Points, and these Airdrop Points then turn into a daily (!) SPS Airdrop for a full year.

You can stake the SPS tokens (4 week unstaking period), currently earning me a 272% APR. So daily, I have this huge compounding opportunity: claim and stake my daily airdrop, claim and stake the 'APR', and come back the next day to claim an airdrop that now is being calculated from a bigger Collection Power than the day before, and so on.

And that's not all

Meanwhile, I can grow not only my SPS, I can also grow my DEC (Dark Energy Crystals) which add up to my collection power as well - crazy!

As a non-player and only casual buyer of some Alpha and Beta cards, I did already rent out some cards through the 'V1' rental market on @peakmonsters, but since they came with an update I decided to stop renting out all cards through the old system and move to the new system.

These rentals earn my DEC, and so while my DEC is passively growing so is my collection power and therefore so is my opportunity to claim new SPS tokens.

It's kind of baffling how powerful this is...

Now, this airdrop is going to be taking 365 days (!) and I'm very curious to see how this evolves. Will the price stay stable as there's a huge compounding effect coming from not selling but staking the coins?

Not sure yet how to be smart about this but...

I've been thinking about selling a portion of my cards, as my collection has only become more valuable over the years, and nothing ever only goes up, right?

But on the other hand... This Airdrop is kind of smart and it might be wise to at least keep compounding my assets and airdrop for at least half a year, after which I can evaluate again - is the interest in the daily airdrop going to wear off or are people only starting to realize the airdrop will get scarcer in the next few months, driving up the price of assets?

Just some proud thoughts

Well, it's no secret I haven't been as active on Hive as I've been in the past, all for good reasons though, but Splinterlands definitely made me realize how lucky I've been to be an early bird, both on Hive and on the Splinterlands game - I just casually bought some packs and really never sold anything. Maybe the best thing I've never sold in my life :-)

I really love the stable growth and expansions I've seen happening in and around the game - from having new collections, to whole new assets, to expanding and reaching out to other crypto platforms, which makes for mutual benefits and adds to a more stable player base for the game - I'm super proud of the Team behind this game and can only see them keep surprising us more and more.

How about you?

What's your experience with the Splinterlands airdrop if you have any? What would you do if you had my collection and could make decisions about it?

Curious to hear your thoughts, and play (or rent and compound ;-)) on!

I'm currently renting out my whole collection at a total of around 5000 dec per day. At the end of the year, I will have made about 100% of the current value of my collection.

Currently, sales prices are so high, it feels that it is at its top. But when I sell, I can't rent those cards out anymore, my total collection power goes down, and eventually, the airdrops will go down too... only costing me money.

As long as DEC value is going up and up, my goal is to earn as much DEC as possible. So renting is the way to go for me.

Right? I think I'm on my way to earn around 5000 DEC a day as well from renting alone, so that would mean after only 90 days I will have earned the 444000 DEC that my collection is worth right now? That's crazy to think about.

No idea what the value of DEC itself will do, but nothing about Splinterlands seems to indicate that selling anything is worth it, as value keeps being added to anything you own every few months or so.

Well, I'll let anything grow for now, and definitely will be keeping an eye on it. Ghees, this is starting to look like a true passive income that I could partially live on...

The DEC value that is shown on peakmonsters is (correct me if I'm wrong) the burn-value. You will earn more by selling the cards.

I sold my favorite card about a month ago and since the market price went x5... I regret it every day :D

And yes... I have been doing the passive income math the last few weeks too. It is looking good. Just hope owning the SPS token will be interesting to people. Otherwise, when we get closer to the end of the airdrop, things will fall apart. Fingers crossed!!

Interesting, didn't know that! I thought it was the 'bid' or 'sale' value of some sorts, but if it's the burn value... Nice!

I sold my favorite card about a month ago and since the market price went x5... I regret it every day :D

That's the thing! If I sold I would probably still at least keep all Alpha cards, I can't imagine them ever not being wanted. I've not combined many of them either as maybe people will want the 'singles' as they only need one or two to level up, and not want to spend (too much) money on combined cards...

Well, we'll see, for now I'm very happy. Remember how we one day started with an Excel sheet of incoming and 'spent' STEEM/SBD? :D Long time ago...

For a rough idea of the sale value, I use the sm-voter bot on discord. But peakmonsters also shows something like that for your card collection in USD.

Who would have thought, this whole STEEM thing would lead to earning money by playing a game ;)

Hey @phortun! :D I'm not playing Splinterlands either! But still very very lucky I do own the cards and now am earning such a nice passive income!

Yes, I've been well, busy with studying and it doesn't really leave much room for creative writing I guess :-) But been well and happy and healthy! How about you?

Awesome, sounds really good :) Looking forward to that update post full of these great news that you are going to write soon, aren´t you? :D ;) I am ok. Hiving daily & waiting for the pandemic to be over to start living (normally) again, like most people I guess :D

Hahaha, yes, I'm definitely behind on giving good updates... Don't hold your breath yet, I'm doing some holidaying coming weeks (in the country, but still) and will only do short updates. But will try to do a bigger post in September :D

Yes, the Pandemic... It still doesn't affect me as much and I've only been able to get better throughout it (mostly health wise) so I'm still not complaining. Although some traveling outside the country would be nice, I can wait a few more months :-)

Hope you're keeping up the spirit anyway and make something of what you can do! Proud of you for keeping up with Hive daily, you've definitely been a better Hiver than me the past year! :D

I think the cards should only go up in value. They are all playable cards, and the ones that aren't printed any more can only be combined into fewer cards, making them more scarce, thus more valuable over time.

It's the DEC and the SPS I'm not so sure about. Sure, their price looks nice today, but after weeks and months of airdrops... I don't know. In any case, I think it's smart (for myself) to spend my DEC on cards - leveling up my Beta cards - before they get even more expensive.

That's a smart way to look at it as well. Keep the cards, add some cards, and be less careful about selling off some of the passively earned DEC.

SPS - is the total supply of it going to be airdropped? If yes it's 'scarce' as well, if not it might be wise to start selling a portion of it as well at some point.

It can't hurt to enjoy some of the riches either, right? :D Thanks for sharing your thoughts @stortebeker!

Congrats on the bonanza.! Imagine how long we have all been involved with this already and how this is paying off. I am selling some cards here and there along the line although I am not sure what is going to happen with the price.

I do know that taking some profits here and there is never a bad thing, but also enjoying the ride while it is riding isn't bad.

The whole thing is just awesome and considering what we are getting from it (and you arent even playing) but I am just doing my battles like forever hahah), what a beauty!

Haha, yes, I just don't have the time to play the battles anymore, used to do them for a while, but it didn't keep me engaged :-)

I'm glad I just didn't sell cards :D

For now selling cards seems to be the one thing I won't do, maybe some of the other passive streams of income. But while APR is high... I'll probably keep stacking those as well :-)

Yes, what a beauty indeed! :D Cheers @karinxxl!

I think that renting cards presents huge opportunities. Some of them I have not even considered before. I have rented many higher level cards. that allows me to play in higher leagues. If I could also rent some of my lower level cards for others and get back some of my dec that would be awesome.

Yes, I'm only renting out, that's providing me some passive income for now - cool right? :D If you can manage to have DEC coming in and out while playing that would provide cool opportunities as well!

i went on 5 day vacation just before the airdrop started. and when i came back i was like wtf is goin on :D

as i understood it, it is an unique situation at the moment. Dec price has an unofficial price regulator when you can buy new decks. As when the price of dec is up people can buy new cards for crypto/fiat and burn them and sell dec. but there are no new cards to buy (there is dice but looks like no on is doing it).
But i feel that will be not important if growth and development continues at this tempo.

i do play the game and i don't want to sell anything, playing the long long game. will see :D

glad you doing good, have fun on your holiday.

Nobody buys dice because you can only buy them with DEC. 3000 DEC for a set = 24 USD. While the other sets were like 2 dollars per set.

It's interesting what you say though... maybe indeed, with new sets of cards that you can buy with fiat instead of DEC, the price of DEC will go down again yes... but as long as you can only rent cards paying with DEC, there will always be an interest in that for the new joiners that can't afford full sets of cards to play with.

i ignored the fact of only buying dice with dec :D

if they do everything they were talking about i do think the game will grow and some cards you will only be able to buy on the second market or rent so... :)

Haha, can't go on vacation while on Hive huh! :D

Yes, I was surprised too, saw some things about an airdrop and then I realized how it would work... Blew my mind. Love that kind of creativity :-)

It indeed will be interesting to see what happens with the price of DEC once there are new card packs for sale indeed :D Maybe a good time to sell at least a portion of DEC before they go on sale. But are new card packs announced yet?

Yes, I'm going to play the long game with my cards as well, they seem to be good to HODL. Maybe some of the tokens can be sold... But I'll see what happens for at least a month, maybe even 6 months of just renting out and staking everything. We'll see.

Exciting times :-)

Yes, I'm doing fine, will do a better update after the holidays. How are you doing? :D

if i remember there is a new pack in the working, not sure how far off is it. there i also a name for it, but i forgot :D

also staking will be "playable" as they said you will be able to stake on players so the APR would probably depend on how good the player does. or something like that.

they are talking a lot about new things, so if they do all of that it could be fun.

Got a short vacation, had a bit to much photography work as parties started and regular work was weird, not a lot of it, just stupid things, mostly with incompetent government entities

Hey Rosanne!

I'm so glad that this is becoming a decent passive income for you!
The SPS airdrop only lasts for a year... so in your position I'd keep renting out your cards, keep collecting that DEC which will increase your SPS airdrop points, which increases your SPS stake, which essentially compounds, etc.

I do think that towards the end of the year there might be a big sell off on cards and DEC in a mini 'race to the bottom' buuuuut the Splinterlands team has also been really smart about their tokenomics and I'm sure they have more surprises up their sleeves.

I'm honestly shocked with how well SPS has been holding onto it's value. I might be wrong but only 200 million of 5 billion has been released... so I imagine it still has some dropping to go... but who knows honestly.

Hope you're well!

Hey @aussieninja!

Yes, I'm happy about this passive income!

A year is a long time, and when you say '5 billion'... Well, we can only assume what that will do with the price long-term. Still curious to see what staking means, as I understand it it will be the main governance token and also the token you need for future 'advantages' in the game/drops/etcetera. So yeah, will stake for at least a while and then see how it goes, it can't hurt :-)

the Splinterlands team has also been really smart about their tokenomics and I'm sure they have more surprises up their sleeves

Exactly how I'm feeling about it :D

Hope you're well!

I'm well and need to write a more decent update, but probably will do some short holiday updates for the next few weeks instead :D How are you doing?

Oh...! My apologies, it looks like it's 3 billion:

image.png

Source : https://sps.splinterlands.com/distribution

I've currently staked about 10k SPS and I'm getting 70 extra SPS with their APR... but yes, I'm also curious to see what staking will mean in the future. It will be a way for the community to make decisions like "should this character have it's speed increased by 1" or "should the team work on this expansion or this feature next". I think in the short term, the amount of SPS you have staked will give you numbers of a promo card that will come out with the Chaos Legion expansion... I think. It's honestly tough to keep track of everything.

I'm good! I was actually bitten by a dog last weekend and had to get a stitch and my hand swelled right up... but it's looking pretty good now.

Looking forward to your update! It was lovely to read your words again.

Ah, nice! 3 Billion it is :-)

10K SPS is a nice stake! Whoa! I trust the team to be super creative about what they'll do with SPS, if I read the whitepaper right it will be the main token for the game, so it's certainly interesting to keep some stake in it :-)

OUCH! As long as inflammation doesn't get out of hand it's fine, but these things can be nasty.

Yes, I'll try to write more and for now just happy to be back and involved a bit more again :-)

Cheers Ninja!

Hi Rosanne. I was actually thinking about you a lot lately. I haven't posted for a while and I thought I am like Rosanne and other things are taking my time and attention. Guess what it is?? Splinterlands! I an planning on making a video to show people what I have been doing. I have a pretty good deck of Splinterland cards and like bil.prag I bought them with the thought that I was in it for the long haul, especially with my Alpha cards. I haven't played consistently in years. With the new rental system I have started playing a new game --see how high a percentage I can rent out and still make the most profit. It is fun and the more DEC the more SPS airdrop. Like you said it is CRAZY.

Hey @sjarvie5, always so good to see you pop up on here! :D

Well, sounds like you found a good hobby!!! I would love to see that video of yours! Is there a smart way to check if you listed your card way too low or way too high? I haven't found it yet - if I need to wait for your video to find out that's fine too ofcourse, but that's my main puzzle at the moment :D

Well, definitely post once you're ready, but I don't blame you at all for playing the Splinterlands Renting game for now! Are you doing well otherwise? :-)

Yes there is an awesome way to see if a card is rented to high or low. It is super easy. A quick explanation is in In Bulk View, click Check Rentals Market and a new column appears and click on that and you can see. I also click delegated and sort by the green arrow and chick not delgated and sort by the red arrow. It will definitely be in the video. Love @peakmonsters!

I have a lot of really great posts coming too. I went backpacking, for the first time, with family in Wyoming. It was wonderful. Arizona State University, where I work starts next week so it is fun getting ready and seeing students back on campus!

Ah, so I guess if the arrow is RED but it is rented at that moment I'm lucky, and if the arrow is GREEN and it is rented at that moment I have to take action? :D

Is there a penalty for stopping a rental like in 'v1'? (You paid an escrow if you terminated a card).

Guess I will learn LOADS of your video, wishing you lots of luck making it! :D

Definitely curious about your backpacking trip! That sounds lovely, spending some quality time like that with family :-) And I can imagine you going back to work is something you can look forward too as well, especially after having had some weeks off :-)

Lol! Do you own any cards? If yes then all you should do right now is log in to splinterlands.com, claim & stake SPS tokens, and maybe then go to peakmonsters.com and list some cards for sale so you passively earn some DEC.

If you don't own any cards... Well, you missed out :D But every small action you do from buying/renting cards to staking SPS (you can buy them on the market too) will get you 'in' the airdrop that will last for a full year.

I have the cards that were included in our welcome bag thingy from SteemFest 😂. I've never opened them, so I don't know if they still count since they're from "Steem Monsters".

Hahahaha! Well, those physical cards could've given you a few free packs of Alpha cards back then, but they've been sold out for literally years now :P So keep the cards you have, maybe they have sentimental value to someone in the future :D

DEC and SPS are for sale like any other coins on Hive Engine, so you could check that out. Once you own DEC and/or SPS you'll be part of the airdrop :-) Not sure if that's something you're interested in - especially DEC seems to grow in value currently since they are used on the rental market and the rental market is interesting for many people who can't buy cards right now (since there are currently NO card packs for sale - only sales and rentals through the secondary market).

Hey good to see you, amazing how Splinterlands brings people out!

It's mental isn't it!?!?

Here's what I'm doing, not financial advice...

  1. Besides a few land plots which I couldn't help sell for $200 a pop, i'm not selling any cards.
  2. I spent some DEC levelling up a few single cards - L3 seems pretty good for the rentals market.
  3. Rented everything out and I use the 'market mis-match tool' to keep an eye on the rentals - I check this twice a day, prices can change A LOT!
  4. With DEC rewards I do a three day cycle - 1. sell for FIAT, 2. Just straight up hold, 3. Sell half and pool with BUSD on Cub
  5. With SPS - sell about 25% for FIAT, pool about 10% with DEC, then I stake about 50% of what's left and keep the rest liquid.

And when Chaos Legion comes out I'll be spending a lot of money on that!

TBH It's been a bit all-consuming this Splinterlands drop, I need to get back on with the rest of my life, hope all is well with you in the real world!

Hey @revisesociology! So good to see you here too, and sharing such great input! :-) Thanks, I love reading your thoughts about this!

1 - I haven't sold anything either! Just keeping things, staking things, collecting things...
2 - Haven't levelled up cards yet, I also consider keeping some level 1s as they might be valuable once they get scarce and people need singles to level up their fav cards, but good to know level 3s are interesting to rent out, maybe I will reconsider and level up some cards indeed
3 - Yes, doing that too! About once a day now :D Crazy how much prices are changing eh? Also interesting to see what end of season will do to the prices this time, I think they should considerably go up as people want to grind in that last week
4 - Nice! Not selling or diversifying yet, but after my short trip (doing some city visits in The Netherlands) I will think about this a bit more and find a strategy I feel good about
5 - Also good to hear - I've been staking everything for now, love seeing SPS doing so well, but am wondering what SPS price will fall to once there is more in circulation - the 'perks' for staking SPS will greatly influence price and staking ofcourse. Hoping for the best!

Wh00p! Yes, Splinterlands has kept me awake as well! :D Just a few days in, missed the first 10 days or so, but now I'm excited and seeing huge potential :D

Cheers! Lovely to chat with you again! Will read up on your stories once I'm back, I think you're in Portugal now but haven't had time to read much :-)

Well I'm glad your getting out during Covid!

I don't do that too much myself, i'm quite ensconced ATM, comfortably so!

I literally have no idea where SPS is going short term - as you say, depends on the perks: it could pump, it could dump, it could stay level, no idea!
