Splinterlands: Earning without investing USD - Week #2

Last week we started this adventure of trying to play a Splinterlands account while investing absolutely no money on it apart from the $10 one needs to buy the Summoner book. So, what happened in between then and now?

In all honesty, not much. As described previously, we are using the little DEC we've managed to obtain by selling a rare card to rent cards in the market so we are able to gain DEC per match won, and therefore start increasing our DEC stack, little by little. We started by renting a couple of Legendaries. And therefore we did manage to access Bronze II quite quickly, all things considered.

The problem with this is that renting to Bronze II hardly pays enough DEC per win to be a viable source of actually gaining more DEC. As an example, on the first day of rentals I spent 5 DEC, but over the next 24 hour period that rentals lasted I managed only to obtain 8.5 DEC from battling. Which means that at this rate, it could take months to obtain enough DEC to purchase 1000 Collection Power.

So I've started wondering what can I do to try and increase the DEC output a little more, so that I can viably start purchasing cards from the market in order to eliminate the need for rentals completely?

I've decided to start renting up to Bronze I hoping this allows me to collect DEC at a faster rate, since I had managed to obtain enough Rating. One needs to obtain 5000 Collection Power to enter Bronze I, and so I've rented 1x Epic Gold Foil from the Chaos Legion set, and 1x Rare Gold Foil from the Untamed set.

Unfortunately, after making these rentals and having played around 10 battles yesterday, as of the time of this writing today #splinterlands is undergoing maintenance. This means I did not have a chance to keep on battling to regain the investment I made, and I will likely not get the DEC I've spent in rentals refunded by the game. It totally sucks.

I'm not going to let me bring me down, though. But unfortunately it does cause me not to have much more to report, as the season ends tomorrow and I've lost my rentals. In case you don't know, there's a cool down period when you get demoted which prevents you for some time before you can advance again, which means I won't be able to access Bronze II before the season ends even if I process a couple more rentals. I will only be able to advance after 24 hours have passed since being demoted.

So I guess we'll see where we are at when the new season starts and hopefully we won't be facing any more of these issues of the last couple of days.

Thanks for reading, and stay safe :)

Interesting, I didn't know about the cooling down. I am happy I got home after the down time on Splinterlands because I was just about to rent my way to Bronze I as well... Yikes happy I saw this beforehand

Is it normal for maintenance to take this long? It's like something else is going on!

It happened once or twice in the last few months.
Hopefully we'll be back on track tomorrow.

It is an admirable exercise, trying to actually Play2Earn from the minimum investment. I started a second account right before they nerfed the Quest Potions. I could not even explain to a strange what the point of that account is. I suppose it is to get a chance at a rare or epic card, the likes of which now sell for almost nothing. I lend myself enough cards to be able to battle in Bronze II, so I can earn bits of DEC. I think it is cool you are doing this because so much of the hype about the obvious instant millionaire-minting powers of this game are from people who have tons of resources at their disposal. Starting from scratch. Well. Not quite the same as wondering which maxed out Legendary summoner to rent out this season. Good luck next season though! :)
