Splinterlands inspiration - where do our monsters come from?

There are currently five different expansions on Splinterlands, if you include the Reward Edition cards as an expansion of its own. This means we currently have hundreds of monsters available to choose from, with the most diverse names and "species."

So where do they all come from? How does the Splinterlands team come up with the lore, the art, and the stats and abilities for cards, and where do they draw their inspiration from? We can only guess, but it's probably a safe bet to say inspiration has been drawn from other computer games and trading card games.

I mean, take a look at these cards:

Both share the same common theme of a more temperamental chicken with similar mechanics of enrage, meaning their attacks will happen to get buffed if these monsters sustain and survive damage. Coincidence? You be the judge of it. I personally think not.

Another example:

This is the Twisted Jester. You're pretty well acquainted to it at this point, if you have been playing Splinterlands. But do you also know another jester that's coming from the League of Legends universe, named Shaco?

He belongs to the Assassin class over on LOL, which also means we can say he is a sniper. His mechanics on Summoner's Rift also revolve around snipping lower health backline units before bailing out using his stealth ability to dodge incoming attacks.

And did you say dragons?

Let's go back in time. Magic: The Gathering was the first succesful Trading Card Game to hit the markets and to have stores completely dedicated to it.

Dragons have been a recurring theme since the early editions and they have kept on appearing in the most recent ones.

There will be other examples of parallels we can draw between the characters in the lore of Splinterlands and other games we know. What other ones can you find? Feel free to share in the comments. I, for one, would love to know.

You mention the lore: The lore they come up for each card definitely needs some work. I was going through some of them one day. I was going to edit them because the grammar and punctuation is frankly a mess, and their word choice is less than good much of the time too. I was thinking maybe I could request payment in spt or something for my efforts. But I was overwhelmed with how bad many of them are, so I gave up. haha

(but in fairness, before Magic and Blizzard got serious about such things and actually hired writers dedicated to writing lore, much of what they always wrote was pretty bad too)

@dbooster.spt

League of legends was similar in the early days and that resulted in them changing the lore of a bunch of champions over time, when they finally hired professional writers to do the job correctly.

(Dunno why I wasn't able to reply directly to your comment)
