Splinterlands BATTLE MAGE SECRETS Weekly Challenge: BRIAR PATCH!

Good day, everyone! It's time again for another battle challenge from Splinterlands. This time, the battle challenge is Briar Patch Ruleset. If you would also like to participate, please make sure to check their post here - BATTLE MAGE SECRETS Weekly Challenge! Aside from the battle itself, I will be also sharing some tips from Splinterlands itself on how to counter and use this ruleset. If this piques your interest, please continue reading this post.

Ruleset: Briar Patch
Description: All monsters receive the Thorns ability at the start of the battle. Enemy monsters that use melee attacks receive damage back.
- Damage returned is equal to damage of the attacker divided by 2, rounded up.
- Melee attack monsters with the Reflection Shield ability do not take damage from thorns.
- The Amplify ability increases damage.

We now have a rough idea of how this ruleset will be used in battle. Here are some tips from Splinterlands to give you more ideas or information that will be very useful in picking your monsters in this ruleset.
Notable Rulesets for Thorns Ability
| Top 3 Rulesets | Bottom 3 Rulesets |
|---|---|
| Up to Eleven - With Amplify, your opponents melee monsters will receive increased damage from Thorns. | What Doesn't Kill You - All monsters gain enrage ability. Beware of granting your enemy 1.5x increased speed and melee attack (rounded up) when they take damage from thorns |
| Holy Protection - Force your opponent to take out their own Divine Shield when they hit your thorny monster. | Keep your Distance - monsters with melee attacks may not be used, nullifying this ability. |
| Up close and Personal - Only melee monsters may be used. Unless they are equipped with the Reflection Shield ability, guarantee that they take damage when attacking. | Close Range - Ranged attack monsters may attack from the first position. This makes it less likely they will use melee attacks. Keep in mind - your opponent may do the opposite to throw you off! |

Notable Abilities for Thorns Ability
| Top 3 Abilities | Bottom 3 Abilities |
|---|---|
| Return Fire - when combined with Thorns, make it more likely your opponent will pay for melee and ranged aggression! | Reflection Shield - If your opponent plays a monster with the reflection shield ability, be aware that they will not take damage from return fire, magic reflect, or thorns |
| Backfire - make your opponent pay for missed attacks | Stun - preventing your opponent from attacking makes it less likely your return fire ability will be triggered. Consider your strategy when pairing this attack with Return Fire |
| Magic Reflect - when combined with thorns, make it more likely your opponent will pay for melee and magic aggression! | Heal - restores a portion of health each round. If played by your opponent, this may cancel out some of the damage from thorns. Be sure to include a monster with affliction in your team to avoid this! |

Battle Configuration
For this battle, aside from Briar Patch, the other rulesets are Lost Legendaries: "Legendary Monsters may not be used in battles" and Broken Arrows: "Ranged attack Monsters may not be used in battles". The maximum amount of mana that can be used is 60 which is quite plentiful. Since Ranged attack monsters are not allowed to use, the best option is to use Magic attack and No attack monsters. Without further ado, here is my line up for this battle.

| Position/Role | Card | Description |
|---|---|---|
| Summoner | Obsidian | Since it is more advisable to use Magic attack monsters, I used Obsidian to give allied monsters +1 Magic Attack power. |
| Position 1 | Arkemis The Bear | My tank here is Arkemis The Bear which even though has a Melee attack and will suffer from the effect of Thorns, it grants +2 Armor to allied monsters which will protect it from Thorn damage. |
| Position 2 | Mycelic Slipspawn | My main tank here is in Position 2 with its Taunt ability. I wanted to attract all attacks and let Bear The Arkemis used its Halving ability on enemy monsters in Position 1. It also has 2 magic attack which will surely deal direct damage to opponent |
| Position 3 | Regal Peryton | It has also 2 magic attack and has 6 Speed which means it will probably attack first if there are no monster with higher Speed than it. |
| Position 4 | Goblin Psychic | My support monster with Magic attack also is at position 4. Its main role is to heal damage taken by Arkemis The Bear. |
| Position 5 | Magi of Chaos | My main attacker is at Position 5 with 3 magic attack power. |
| Position 6 | Venari Spellsmith | One of the important monsters in this battle is Venari Spellsmith with its Amplify ability. It will increase the damage of Thorns to the enemy by 1. This monster will also remove positives status effects on the enemy that it hit. |
The enemy used Kelya Frendul which gives +1 Armor to allied monsters and also has Venari Wavesmith that grants +2 Armor and this makes sense because that additional armor is vital against Thorns. However, most of my monsters have magic attack and looking at Round 1, turn 6, Diemonshark easily received 3 damage to its HP.

Also, since I have a monster with Amplify, the damage of Thorns to enemy Diemonshark increased from 2 to 3, however, it only reduced the armor and not the HP.

The enemy Flying Squid also suffer from Thorns effect, however most of the enemy also has magic attacks and also has a healer.

In Round 1 turn 20, Diemonshark was killed even though it still has Armor on it. This is because Magic Attack will ignore armor unless the enemy has Void Armor ability.

In Round 2, Flying Squid was also defeated by Magic attacks while Arkemis The Bear is halving the attack power of enemy in position 1. At this point, we can see that my line up is already winning.

In Round 2, turn 16, my line up already defeated enemy Merdaali Guardian, the healer on enemy side.

By the end of Round 3, Venari Wavesmith fell down and that makes me the winner of this brawl battle. Here is the full replay in Splinterlands.

This was definitely a very successful Brawl battle. The Amplify Ability really worked well with Thorns ability. Also, the Armor provided by Arkemis The Bear really help it from suffering direct damage from Thorns ability. And lastly, Magic Attacks really worked well in this kind of ruleset.
