A Mini Shopping Spree For Gold Foils & My Wish List

Here's the current CL Legendary Gold Foil roster:

After receiving another Cosmos chain airdrop that tripled in value in its first two days, it was time to make another investment into Splinterlands. Per usual, I used free money to not touch my core assets, and not feel pressure during the spending process.

When I get airdrops on the Cosmos chain, they often run up nicely for the first few days on small volume. After that point, I decide if I have interest/future use case for the tokens, and/or if the staking or LP rewards are worth putting them to use. In this case, I decided to dump it, just a modest $215 worth. As it was $68 two days ago, this was nice exit. Ironically, the resistance I anticipated as a local top was ignored, so it kept running to where the $215 would've been $321 at the recent peak. Hindsight is 20/20, but I didn't want to be greedy.

After selling a bit of recent liquid staking rewards to reach a total of $400 for my budget, the question became what to buy. As HIVE was in the middle of a random 24% spike, this had me worried that my timing was bad, or at least that it'd throw off the land market.

Options In Initial Priority:

  • My second Gold Quix The Devious + Another Gold CL Legendary
  • 1 Land Plot
  • 4 lower-end Gold CL Legendary Cards
  • 100 CL Packs

Rationale:

  • I got one gold Quix in a pack and am tempted to level him up so I can play much higher cards. Leveling common cards would be rather easy for better win rates. I also had many cards that are unable to be played due to my summoner level. I really want to max him out over time as a trophy card.

  • I have 2 land plots, not enough. Prices seem to be stable enough in a decent zone to not feel like it's critical to buy now. I bought my other two for ~$612 and $575, so this level would lower my ATC nicely.

  • Current # of airdrop-eligible packs is 300, so I could use more for the new pack requirements for upcoming airdrops. I also want to hold packs for the long haul to resell (duh).

Decisions, Decisions:

I was torn on which route to take, but delayed on choosing while I shipped crypto off to yet another exchange to make two more swaps. It was during this time that I saw a nice bottom in the short-term charts of the token I'd sent, motivating me to wait a bit for a bounce to play out. Well, it sort of did, and my patience got me a whopping $10 extra to play with. If the airdropped token hadn't started rising while I was doing this transfer, I'd have swapped right away, so I was trying to earn a little back. At current sale point to the high, the delta was $106, so I'd shaved that down to $96. Small win, but it makes me feel better about selling before it kept running.

At this point, I decided that I was going to skip buying 100 packs. It was between land and individual cards. Since HIVE's price was bouncing around, and some gold cards seemed to be at decent prices, I chose to skip the land for now. I changed the plan to wanting at least 3 gold legendary cards, and would possibly buy some packs with the rest. I was initially fixated on Adelade Brightwing for the Armor Repair and Resurrection abilities, but wasn't a huge fan of the 1 speed.

After some transfers, I finally got 410K CREDITS to play with.

Owned Stats Before:

Total Value (filterable): $ 1,787.36 using List Prices // $ 1,620.31 using Market Prices // 109,180 CP (Burn Value)

Purchased:

  • Gold Legendary River Helondale ($92.50)

image.png

I already have a regular level 2, but there was one priced to move at $10.50 below the rest of the market where they'd previously had it listed for an hour before. Someone wanted to dump it fast. I had to jump on the nice discount, thus adding about $10 back in lost airdrop profit if I'd held longer. This card would've surely been sniped and right back to $103 if I'd bought later.

As will be the case for this and the following cards, I'll more than 4 plots' worth of SPS airdrop weight for these (which I'll stake) to help pay part of them off.

  • Legendary Gold Torrent Fiend ($101)

image.png

I use Water all of the time and hadn't gotten one of these Fiends from my packs yet. Instead of paying $22.23 for 3 regulars, I forked over the premium for the Collection Power and DEC bonus since I'll use this card all of the time. Quality over quantity. This also gets me in position to level up if I get a second one in a pack over time... putting that thought out into the metaverse...

  • Legendary Gold Baakjira ($132.90)

image.png

I got a regular one from the airdrop, but wanted the Strengthen ability from L2. Buying two more regulars would've been $31.50, so the extra $100 was worth it to me for the Collection Power and DEC bonus again.

  • Gold Forgotten One ($20.50)

image.png

I got one from one of my first packs and wanted to get this to level 3 to get the Retaliate ability. I can't use this with my normal Fire summoners yet, but can use it with my Quix for now on special occasions. Immunity is huge, and the new ability will help wipe out those bots that launch lineups without considering the rule sets.

That's $346.90 on 4 cards. I think these will do well in value over the years once the final supplies stabilize and start shrinking.

Additional Cards For Leveling Up:

  • 2x Venari Wavesmith ($8.64 Total)
  • Gold Xenith Monk ($7.60)
  • Gold Cursed Windeku ($7.39)
  • Gold Pelacor Arbalest ($5.97)
  • 3x Gold Pelacor Bandit ($3.14 Total)
  • 3x Gold Pelacor Conjurer ($2.90 Total)
  • 3x Gold Pelacor Deceiver ($2.48 Total)

That's another $38.20 for 14 Gold cards. A few of these were 1,000 CP each for good utility at their higher levels and overall value.

  • Regular Queen Mycelia ($25) - my first for the +2 Armor

I hadn't landed her in a pack yet and had to have it for the game play. I'll ultimately seek out a gold foil, but not until I check a few other boxes.

Owned Stats Immediately After Buys:

Total Value (filterable): $ 2,209.65 using List Prices // $ 2,022.53 using Market Prices // 153,305 CP (Burn Value)

44,125 Collection Power gained.

Next Steps:

  • Decide if I'll sell my second gold Lira The Dark to flip into another GFL. I somehow got 2 from only 292 airdrop-eligible packs.
  • Buy the second gold Quix The Devious for the monster L3 Legendary GF Summoner.
  • 1-2 more land plots.
  • 100 CL packs (open 50, hold 50)
  • Sweep up one of each Gold Foil Epic since I only have one L3 now. After that, I'll double them. I prefer to go for the higher value cards now and work my way down.

I have several airdrops coming up, so I'll try to use those funds for these. One airdrop should fund a plot or two in itself, but I may dedicate my next plot to come from my liquid HBD earnings only. It'll take a while, but I sort of need to compartmentalize revenue sources for my goals to not have too much conflict when it's time to act. I also hesitate to spend much more of my defi yield because I prefer to compound that at 85-375%+ APR. There's much more out there, with compounding airdrops, than 12% on HBD.

While I could've had more funds if I waited 2 hours to see if my airdrop would break resistance, I secured the funds and made two micro decisions to wash out some of the lost gains there. It could've gone down just as fast, so the key is to let the decision live and move on to the next goal.

Thanks for following,
@steemmatt

Nice purchases, for sure! I'm curious as to your opinion on the buying cards you want (like you did here) vs spending the money on card packs instead to see what they contain. 🤔

I bought 300 packs (150 with vouchers I bought) and had some decent results. If you look on Peakmonsters under the Explorer to see the value of the packs you open, so many of them are at a large loss in value when compared to the $4 cost. While I'll buy more packs, Gold and Gold Legendary cards give such a strong boost in Collection Power, so I wanted to focus on them this round -- getting precisely what I wanted instead of rolling the dice to get whatever luck offered. While you can get lucky with packs, you can also be equally unlucky, where it feels like a waste of money for the chance. I don't mind sniping exactly what I want to control the outcome, and also strengthen my deck most efficiently.

Outstanding post. Appreciate the insight down to your decision-making process. Love the transparency. Will feature/share this on my daily Splinterlands Digest and on Twitter.

Damn, you have put a lot of thought into this. I kind of just want to grab a Doctor Blight, and maybe a Chaos Dragon. Regular foil though, because definitely too rich for my blood
