I Thought I'd Be Happy With One Plot Of Land

Since buying my first plot two weeks ago after about a month of earning new funds for it, having one doesn't feel like enough.

If I'm being realistic, having 2 or 3 probably won't be enough either. What is the magic number where you have enough land to make it worthwhile? It sounds like this level of land ownership, assuming normal land, will yield simple resources that can be sold or supplied on the market for some ROI.

While land on other chains is extremely expensive, I find Splinterlands Plots to have solid value relative to its base price. I say this with the caveat that these Plots are probably not apples-to-apples with other blockchain game/metaverse options. Time will tell, but one thing is clear... being without any land is probably not the right idea for the long run if you believe them playing a large role in the future of gaming.

While it's convenient to buy another Splinterlands Plot in good faith that the game will build all types of value around it, seeing someone's tweet recently about getting theirs for ~$13 makes me hesitate to drop another $600-$800 in for my second. While these funds are strictly sourced from recent DeFi interest and Hive earnings I've pooled (to not risk core holdings), and I'm ready to strike again, something is telling me to think it through.

My main obstacle is that I'm not sure if something that's up over 56x on potentially the final leg of a bull market is the best time. Perhaps I could use those funds more efficiently if the markets turn south to acquire multiples of land while they're far from being live in the game anyway.

While I'm not thinking that it's too pricey versus other options, it feels like a lot of the promise of these Plots has already been priced in. Demand on Hive-Engine is fairly slow, which is probably the right time to invest, ironically. On the other hand, in-game assets for other projects I'm keen on diversifying into have actually come down quite a bit from their initial drops, where I feel that I'm getting a strong discount there. While I don't want to overextend my focus by investing in too many games, I feel that I should evenly spread out my investments initially so I have fair access to any beta gameplay or token claims across the board.

For comparison, there are 166,464 LANDs in the Sandbox, and 90,000 in Decentraland. Splinterlands at 150,000 seems to be in the same realm and they recently reiterated that this supply will be fixed for Praetoria. While Sandbox land is far more expensive, the broader future application for business and entrepreneurship may slightly favor that valuation for its broader upside (potential bubbles aside). With Splinterlands land costing far less, its main utility seems to primarily be for in-game use. Is that wrong? Am I looking into this too much where SPL land is an absolute steal? When looking outside of the SPL community, and initial issuance price 56x less, is this still the case?

Another key thought is that buying a Land Plot is sort of a lottery ticket as you'll be drawing the land you'll own instead of being able to buy exactly what you want as on other games. That's an element that is both exciting and not so exciting. I really don't like to rely on chance. The in-game assets of other games are issued with finite supplies and I can pick them as I choose to hone my game play direction and strategy.

The Dilemma:

I'm torn between getting my next plot now, or waiting until the Chaos Legion sale is over and attention dies down (barring any major new news releases). I can continue to siphon funds from earnings to budget for more land and simply read the market a bit more. In the meantime, I can diversify into 1 or 2 other play-to-earn games I'm keen on.

Alternatively, I could just drop in for another Plot now at any cost today (because that's popular advice), and stop asking questions. While it wouldn't be a bad thing, I'm hesitant at the opportunity cost of the other games I'd be slightly delaying my first investments into, which are younger, but very intriguing at this time.

The Hive price is also performing fairly well lately, so the Plots aren't going to get any easier to buy unless I cherry pick my DeFi interest sources wisely to fund from those that have risen at roughly an equal rate to be in parity for optimal purchasing power.

Perhaps investing in some packs for now is a better step for now. I'm not sure why I can't find conviction in this process either way. I honestly think it was the tweet about the initial cost of under $13 that struck me most to make me reconsider my next land Plot, but I'm not sure if I'd still be too much of a land peon to make an impact anyway.

Question: Do you find more comfort in fully setting yourself up in one game before moving onto the next? If not, do you prefer to spread the investment evenly to have equal exposure to receive potential benefits and early adopter privileges on multiple platforms?

Any feedback or advice will be carefully considered.

Time to finish watching the last AMA and browse the Splinterlands community's posts for more inspiration.

Thanks,

My understanding is that with land you'll be able to mint your own in-game NFTs and sell them to other players, and land owners will be the only ones capable of minting those NFTs.

I believe that's correct, but I thought that many plots of land would be needed for the supply chain to mint those NFTs. Since land is drawn randomly at time of issuance, the odds of having a complete chain to make the spells or battle items "in-house" on your own land would be fairly slim.

After reading several of your posts I find your internal struggle to be very relatable and personable.

Splinterlands was my gateway drug to blockchains, and the more I start to accumulate the more cool stuff I find that is out there to collect. It’s easy to start feeling like all of it is so “must have”.

What I‘ve been gathering around here is that this is a long term game and there shouldn’t really be a rush to anything, which I can get behind and have fun with.

Looking forward to hearing more about what you decide or ponder with the land.

Thanks. Ironically, I saw the land price drop below $500 yesterday and swung into immediate action to move tokens around to eventually get Litecoin to swap for Hive. Sadly, of all times, the Cosmos Atom blockchain where my liquid funds were coming from was down for scheduled maintenance and I had no choice but to abort. At $490 - $525, there was no choice but to buy. It spiked back to normal right after, but has settled down. I still can't move my Atom yet, so it's unnerving to say the least.

As for SPL in general, I'm tempted to buy some of the older release cards while their prices are suppressed. If I was going to buy something at $50, and it's $17 now, why wouldn't I if the goal is fun anyway?

Appreciate the message and follow.

Yeah exactly, some of those look really good especially relative to last 3 mo. My problem is I started buying golds without realizing I can't use their abilities with level 1 summoners. Still learning lol. I see those summoner prices coming down and can't help but think they'll continue going lower with the airdrops, but what do I know.
