The 2 inspire monsters really does do a LOT.
And yes, I also like the vulture. But once this little guy levels a bit, he can hold his own pretty well too.

I just took on one of those tips from you and Chris about using 2 inspire monsters and it worked well for me :)
Screeching Vulture becomes more and more robust as it keeps upping it's health by each round and flying ability makes it to escape from few attacks too :)
