My Splinterlands choices! - Wild or Modern? Buy or Rent?

A week ago, with this post I announced that I wanted to actively play Splinterlands again. On that occasion I also specified my reasons which I will summarize for you:

• The game has simple mechanics, but is difficult to master;
• The games are fast;
• You can play from mobile (it also has an app for iOS);
• It is developed on the Hive Blockchain, which has no transition costs and is fast and well decentralized;
• Has a team capable of keeping the project active and sustainable over the years.

However, I left you with some doubts and a request for advice. Luckily, some users kindly commented on the post and helped clarify my thoughts. I have therefore defined the next steps and how I will move, in the hope that they are the correct choices.
In particular, I clarified doubts relating to two questions:

• Play in WILD or MODERN mode;
• Choose whether to BUY cards or RENT a deck.

WILD or MODERN

To understand which was the best choice, I first had to understand what the differences were between these two modes. The main one concerns the cards that can be used.
In the Modern format, in fact, I can use all cards from all editions. There are no restrictions of any kind. This means that any particularly strong card can be used. There are no limits, except those of the match.
It is certainly the most difficult format, which rewards the largest, most extensive and most developed card collections. Only those who have invested a lot and for a long time can excel in this format.

It is also the format where the absence of bots is guaranteed. In my opinion, this is the most beautiful feature of this format and which I hope the Splinterlands Team will also want to extend to the Wild format and to all future formats that they want to develop. Playing against Bots is demeaning as a player, it wears out the game in its economic structure and is not fun. I think having the guarantee of the absence of bots is a significant advantage.

Also, linked to the other two points, the Modern format has the highest rewards. A significant element. If I understand correctly, however, it concerns the rewards in SPS, and not as Reward cards. Hence, greater rewards in Tokens. Here I have to thank @libertycrypto who recently brought his analysis here where he highlights this fact and who in the comments on my previous post allowed me to clarify my position and make a decision.

In the Wild format, however, you can only play cards from the last two expansions. This also allows for greater competition for those with smaller or more recent card collections. Unfortunately, Bots are present in this format and this, also as a consequence, reduces the rewards of the matches.
There is also something to point out here: only the SPS rewards are lower. Card rewards remain unchanged.

Buy or rent

The choice to purchase cards, in my opinion, requires having some personal characteristics:

• Know the game well. Buying a card means investing and therefore you need to have good gaming experience to be able to make wise choices that allow you to win more and more matches in the future.
• Have the economic availability to invest. Not everyone can have it, maybe not immediately as soon as they start playing. Having economic availability does not only mean buying, but also the possibility of making mistakes in purchases, perhaps by focusing on cards that we initially thought were strong and in playing them, in the long run we realize that they are not.

Buying, however, means that the cards are yours. The winnings are yours. In short, 100% of the risk, 100% of the profit (if any!).

The choice to rent instead, in my opinion, allows for a softer entry:

• I can rent entire decks, or individual cards. This makes the choice more customizable or scalable, allowing you to try different solutions before, perhaps proceeding with a purchase.
• Rental costs less. To rent cards or decks, there are two ways: The first consists of paying for the rental, as is done with any service. The second allows you to reach an agreement with the renter to share the winnings according to an agreed percentage. A solution that I find very interesting, because only the winnings in SPS tokens are shared.
• It allows you to test the cards you need before purchasing them;
• Allows many other players to join the game. It's a way to grow the player base, therefore more investors, greater growth of the game and greater earnings for everyone.

My choices

My condition, as already mentioned last week, is that of a player with a very modest card collection. My first objective is therefore to expand it as much as possible, so as to be able to anticipate as soon as possible the moment when I will not have to depend on other people's cards.
From this point of view, therefore, the choice to play games in Wild or Modern format is irrelevant.

For personal taste, I would prefer not to play against Bot, but against other players. But I have to take into account the deck I will be using. If I used a powerful deck, full of cards from all editions, I could aim for the Modern format. If instead I were using a more recent deck, I would have to, with regret, aim for the Wild format, where perhaps I would be able to progress more.

The choice of deck is therefore a central factor. In this case I have to thank @arc7icwolf for the comments he left on my previous post and which I found very useful.
I do not have sufficient liquidity and experience to proceed with the purchase of cards. I would only risk spending money for nothing, perhaps regretting purchases due to inexperience. The path I prefer is rental, a softer entry into the game that I find more suitable for me.

At this point I have to choose whether to rent a playing deck by paying or whether to share the winnings with the renter.
The first choice is through Peakmonsters, where by paying in DEC I rent a deck for a certain period and all the winnings are mine. The site has a large availability of decks, even if some have been listed for more than a year. This makes me doubt they can currently be competitive. The Wild format has changed and I'm not sure if the cards these decks offer are actually usable.
Also, to maximize DEC spent, I would have to play very consistently every day. Which I would like to do, but life's commitments don't always allow.

The second choice instead takes place through NFTy Arcade. Here, I choose a deck, where the renter has decided the percentage of rewards (only in SPS tokens) that he will receive in case of victory. If I win cards, they stay with me. I don't know how long the decks have been available on the portal, but this choice would allow me to have more flexibility in playing, without feeling the pressure of having spent money. The available decks are often recent and since my main goal is to obtain cards, I am willing to leave part of any SPS winnings to the renter.

So I chose to rent a deck on NFTy Arcade and start dedicating myself to the WILD format next season.

Conclusion and your advice

The reasoning I have made is the result of analysis and my starting situation. Obviously they cannot apply to everyone, but they make up part of what I consider a strategy. You always need a strategy, both in games, in investments, and in life. I hope that reading my reflections can lead someone to reflect on their own.

Le mie scelte su Splinterlands! - Wild o Modern? Compro o affitto?

Una settimana fa, con questo post annunciavo di voler tornare a giocare attivamente a Splinterlands. In quella occasione avevo anche precisato le mie motivazioni che vi riassumo:

• Il gioco ha meccaniche semplici, ma è difficile da padroneggiare;
• La partite sono veloci;
• Si può giocare da mobile (ha anche una app per iOs);
• E' sviluppato sulla Hive Blockchain, che non ha costi di transizione ed è veloce e ben decentralizzata;
• Ha un team abile a mantenere il progetto attivo e sostenibile negli anni.

Tuttavia vi avevo lasciati con alcuni dubbi e la richiesta di consigli. Fortunatamente, alcuni utenti hanno gentilmente commentato il post e mi hanno aiutato a chiarirmi le idee. Ho quindi definito i prossimi passi e come mi muoverò, nella speranza che siano le scelte corrette.
In particolare mi sono chiarito i dubbi relativi a due domande:

• Giocare in modalità WILD o MODERN;
• Scegliere se ACQUISTARE carte o AFFITTARE un mazzo.

WILD o MODERN

Per capire quale fosse la scelta migliore, dovevo innanzitutto capire quali fossero le differenze tra queste due modalità. La principale riguarda le carte che si possono usare.
Nel formato Modern, infatti, posso usare tutte le carte di tutte le edizioni. Non ci sono restrizioni di alcun tipo. Questo fa si che qualsiasi carta particolarmente forte può essere usata. Non ci sono limiti, se non quelli del match.
E' sicuramente il formato più difficile, che premia le collezioni di carte più grandi, ampie e sviluppate. Solo chi ha investito molto e per molto tempo, può primeggiare in questo formato.

E' anche il formato dove è garantita l'assenza di Bot. Questo secondo me è la caratteristica più bella di questo formato e che spero il Team di Splinterlands vorrà estendere anche al formato Wild e a tutti i futuri formati che vorranno sviluppare. Giocare contro i Bot è avvilente come giocatore, logora il gioco nella sua struttura economica e non è divertente. Avere la garanzia dell'assenza di Bot credo sia un pregio non indifferente.

Inoltre, collegato agli altri due punti, il formato Modern presenta le ricompense più alte. Un elemento non da poco. Se ho capito correttamente, però, riguarda la ricompense in SPS, e non come carte Reward. Quindi, maggiori ricompense in Token. Qui devo ringraziare @libertycrypto che recentemente qui ha portato una sua analis dove evidenzia questo fatto e che nei commenti al mio precedente post mi ha permesso di far chiarezza sulla mia posizione e prendere una decisione.

Il formato Wild invece, si possono giocare solo carte delle ultime due espansioni. Questo permette una maggiore competizione anche a chi ha raccolte più piccole o recenti di carte. Purtroppo in questo formato i Bot sono presenti e questo, anche come conseguenza, riduce le ricompense dei match.
C'è anche qui da precisare: sono più basse solo le ricompense in SPS. Le ricompense in carte rimangono inalterate.

Acquistare o noleggiare

La scelta di acquistare le carte, secondo me richiede di avere alcune caratteristiche personali:

• Conoscere bene il gioco. Acquistare una carta significa investire e quindi bisogna avere una buona esperienza di gioco per poter fare delle scelte oculate che permettano di vincere sempre più match in futuro.
• Avere la disponibilità economica per investire. Non tutti possono averla, magari non subito appena iniziano a giocare. Avere disponibilità economica non significa solo acquistare, ma anche la possibilità di sbagliare degli acquisti, magari puntando su delle carte che inizialmente pensavamo forti e nel giocarle, alla lunga ci rendiamo conto che non lo sono.

Acquistare però significa che le carte sono tue. Le vincite sono tue. Insomma, il 100% del rischio, il 100% del guadagno (se c'è!).

La scelta di noleggiare invece, permette a mio avviso un ingresso più morbido:

• Posso noleggiare interi mazzi, o singole carte. Questo rende la scelta più personalizzabile o scalabile, permettendo di provare soluzioni diverse prima, magari di procedere con un acquisto.
• Il noleggio costa meno. Per noleggiare carte o mazzi, ci sono due strade: La prima consiste nel pagare il noleggio, come si fa con qualunque servizio. La seconda permette di accordarsi con il noleggiatore, di condividere le vincite secondo una percentuale concordata. Una soluzione che trovo molto interessante, perchè si condividono solo le vincite in token SPS.
• Permette di testare delle carte che ci servono, prima di acquistarle;
• Permette l'ingresso al gioco a molti altri giocatori. E' un modo per far crescere la playerbase, quindi maggiori investitori, maggiore crescita del gioco e maggiori guadagni per tutti.

Le mie scelte

La mia condizione, come già anticipato settimana scorsa, è quella di un giocatore con una collezione di carte molto modesta. Il mio primo obiettivo è quindi quella di ampliarla il più possibile, in modo da poter anticipare quanto prima il momento in cui non dovrò dipendere dalle carte di altri.
Da questo punto di vista, quindi, la scelta di giocare partite in formato Wild o Modern è ininfluente.

Per gusto personale, preferirei non giocare contro Bot, ma contro altri giocatori. Ma devo tenere conto del mazzo che userò. Se usassi un mazzo potente, ricco di carte di tutte le edizioni, potrei puntare al formato Modern. Se invece usassi un mazzo più recente, dovrei, con dispiacere, puntare al formato Wild, dove forse riuscirei a progredire maggiormente.

La scelta del mazzo è quindi un fattore centrale. In questo caso devo ringraziare @arc7icwolf per i commenti che ha lasciato al mio precedente post e che ho trovato molto utili.
Non ho liquidità ed esperienza sufficiente per procedere all'acquisto di carte. Rischierei solo di spendere soldi per nulla, magari pentendomi acquisti dovuti all'inesperienza. La strada che preferisco è il noleggio, un ingresso al gioco più morbido e che trovo più adatto a me.

A questo punto devo scegliere se affittare un mazzo da gioco pagando o se condividere le vincite con il noleggiatore.
La prima scelta avviene attraverso Peakmonsters, dove pagando in DEC affitto un mazzo per un determinato periodo e tutte le vincite sono mie. Il sito ha una grossa disponibilità di mazzi, anche se alcuni sono inseriti da più di un anno. Questo mi fa dubitare possano essere attualmente concorrenziali. Il formato Wild è cambiato e non sono sicuro che le carte che offrono questi mazzi siano effettivamente utilizzabili.
Inoltre, per massimizzare i DEC spesi, dovrei giocare con molta costanza tutti i giorni. Cosa che vorrei fare, ma non sempre gli impegni della vita permettono.

La seconda scelta invece avviene attraverso NFTy Arcade. Qui, scelgo un mazzo, dove il noleggiatore ha deciso la percentuale delle ricompense (solo in token SPS) che gli spettano in caso di vittoria. Se vinco delle carte, rimangono a me. Non so da quanto tempo siano disponibili i mazzi sul portale, ma questa scelta mi permetterebbe di avere più flessibilità nel giocare, senza sentire la pressione di aver speso dei soldi. I mazzi disponibili sono spesso recenti e dato che il mio obiettivo principale è ottenere delle carte, sono disposto a lasciare parte delle eventuali vincite in SPS al noleggiatore.

Ho cosi scelto di noleggiare un mazzo su NFTy Arcade e di iniziare a dedicarmi al formato WILD nella prossima stagione.

Conclusione e i vostri consigli

I ragionamenti che ho fatto sono il frutto di analisi e della mia situazione di partenza. Non possono ovviamente valere per tutti, ma compongono parte di quella che considero una strategia. Serve sempre una strategia, sia nei giochi, che negli investimenti, che nella vita. Spero che leggere le mie riflessioni possa indurre qualcuno a riflettere sulle proprie.

Come sempre, potrei aver detto delle inesattezze o qualcosa di completamente sbagliato, così come portreste volermi dare dei consigli. Correzzioni e consigli sono sempre più che benvenuti e vi invito a farli qua sotto nei commenti.
