A Combination of This and That

avatar

Next week the first Splinterlands Chaos Legion packs will be opened and played in battle. With 1306 packs and the guaranteed drops of Dr Blights, I will have 6556 of my own cards, to trawl through and decide what to do with. My initial thoughts with this batch (I hope to get more later) are to combine all I can to MAX and see what is leftover, if anything. I don't have a lot of maxed cards, but sine I rarely play in the upper leagues, it doesn't matter that much as long as they are high enough. However I prefer to have them maxed or the capabilities to max if I can, just in case. I will MAX a Blight.

What is going to be really interesting once these cards hit the open game, is how people are going to adjust their gameplay. Most probably build habitual responses to certain rule sets and with a raft of new cards hitting the field, many are going to find their approach lacking. a lot of the new cards are quite powerful and the summoners can mix things up a bit.

For example, I am looking forward to the Earth Summoner that provides +1 magic, as that changes my own Earth set potential quite a lot. Throwing a Djinn Bilkja, a Khmer Princess and a Goblin Sorcerer into the mix and add in the CL tank Mycelic Slipspawn or in lower mana games, Regal Peryton, and things are looking interesting on the earth magic side, which has been lacking in my set thus far.

But, it isn't only going to be me who will struggle in the early weeks (I always struggle), because this injection of new cards will mean everyone is out there trying to work out what works in the new set and how it works in combination with what they already have. Plus, they have to consider what other people are playing and in what combination. It is a welcome disruption in my opinion, but at the same time, I am going to struggle for a long time to come I feel, while there are the more mathematically-minded who will catch on to the possibilities much faster.

But for many who are making their first foray into buying a substantial number of packs, I think they are going to find that they are able to compete on a gameplay level far better than they were, as some of these cards are very strong. Of course, the people who have near or full sets will always have an advantage of suitability to the widest set of rules, but there will hopefully be some shakeup happening in the rankings, where there are more unfamiliar names up the top. Though, I am not expecting earthshattering change.

Really, I am just looking forward to more people getting involved and this is a great opportunity for those who have been already, but have only been renting to start to collect a wider set of cards. A lot of people seem that they don't want to buy into anything digital, even though they likely spend thousands on other entertainment activities per year that return nothing to them. If you are going to waste time gaming, may as well make some scratch in the process.

Currently, there are a lot of people playing the new cards in the test server, but I can't get in, so I will have to wait to give them a burl next week for the first. In the meantime, I will just continue having casual conversation with the regulars to see what their plans are and of course, asking the audience. There is going to be a lot of learning going on.

And I think this is what is going to be both interesting and annoying in the coming weeks, as there are going to be a lot of excited posts over what people got in packs, how they are playing, the combinations, the prices on the secondary markets and everything else Splinterlands. It won't be to everyone's tastes for sure - but what is?

Wow, talking strategy like a pro, it’s a great part of the game that I enjoy a lot myself.

No pro here. I like the economic side of the game a lot. The game is okay too :)

Sheesh! every time I read one of your posts about Splinterlands, everything sounds like a drunkard trying to insult me stuttering in old German language. I can't understand a damn.

Although on second thought, most likely it is just me remembering that the most sophisticated game I played on a PC lately was Bushido or something like that. ;o)

Most of what is found in the new world is foreign to the old, isn't it?

Well, maybe not as much foreign as cryptic for the old. But perhaps without much longer time available as to start learning old German now. LoL

It seems you have been a Splinterlands professor. I think that you should prepare a post for those who do not know about Splinterlands to start from scratch :)

Nah, I am definitely not the right person to do that and I suspect there are many already :)

Cool, I didn't know the official stats of some of the new summoners and cards! I don't tune in that intently to that type of stuff so I just learn things from people like you :D

One thing I really hope to see more of is cards with cleanse! With all of these negative status effects, debuffs and the like, we seriously need more cards with cleanse. Earth has none, death has none and some others are only available with high level cards.

Fingers crossed for you in your pack opening man! I wonder how many gold foil legendaries you'll get. I'm hoping to get at least one but you never know.. might not get any! Would be epic to get a GF Dr. Blight lol

It's like Christmas morning that's for sure!

@flauwy released them all together the other day. I was hoping there wouldn't be a complete spoiler and a lot would be left to surprise on the day - but...

Cleanse would be good, and a little more defense against some of the legendary summoners.

I wonder how many gold foil legendaries you'll get.

Other than the one in the guarantee - I think I might get lucky for another...

It's like Christmas morning that's for sure!

I should take the day off work :D

I used some of my rewards to get involved back in the Alpha days. I have to say, i thought these cards could be worth something, that's why i got the starter deck. I have put zero money in and my cards are worth a ton now!

I never expected to enjoy the game and i played a lot and earned a lot. That year off i took didn't do me any favors. I've been too busy curating and commenting lately to play so i listed all my cards for rent. I should have done it sooner tbh. I think i got 8 packs of the Chaos Legion editions. I want to open them when they come but i may keep them unadulterated. We will see. The SPS airdrops have been badass! This game has been a cash cow for sure... but with actual use and practical application.

I didn't realize you played since i know how much you don't value games! hahaha
Cheers bro! Get you some of that gaming action! Dr. Max Blight to your service!

I have put zero money in and my cards are worth a ton now!

Now it requires putting money in to make anything significant in my opinion - at least if coming from the western world.

I only play a few days per season, then rent :)

The SPS airdrops have been badass!

Definitely for those who got in early. For me, not so much, since it is a return on quite a heavy investment, so it take far longer to actually cover what I put in. I am nowhere near yet I think :)

Can't wait to see how everyone's strategies change. Those new abilities that do extra damage to higher mana cards or only attack every other turn but with double damage look amazing. I've only joined the game in recent months but I feel lucky to have started just in time to be here for the game's newest batch of cards.

Yeah, they are going to be interesting, as will scattershot that hits random cards. Strategy will change a lot.

I like that the game is evolving. Scattershot sounds like a fun ability that could potentially sway the tides of battle. I'm already imagining it maybe hitting a well-placed Creeping Ooze and removing an opponent's previously secure speed-boost.

I think they are going to find that they are able to compete on a gameplay level far better than they were

It would be nice to have some higher level summoners because with level 1 I have a hard time even in silver leagues... It is a shame that you were right about SPS price going down. It seems that I will not be able to buy as much packs as I would want.

If interested in the game, I think people have to start realizing that they may have to put some of their own funds in in order to buy some individual cards or, some packs and leave it to chance.

many are going to find their approach lacking

Only if they made bots to play for them. Have you played CCGs before? XD

When new sets drop, you excitedly go through the new cards and find cool ones and the first thing you do is work out where you can use it in existing decks or what kind of decks you can build with or around cards.

Or where you can slot stuff in the lineup in the case of Splinterlands, I mostly come from playing Pokemon TCG and M:tG x_x

A lot of people seem that they don't want to buy into anything digital

As far as I can tell from knowing a lot of these people (not even on Hive), is that with digital assets you're "wasting" "real" money on "nothing" whereas when you buy a piece of cardboard with pretty artwork on it you have a piece of cardboard with pretty artwork on it.

Everyone loves pretty cardboard pictures - that is why Hallmark makes so much money! :)
