Bullying Wildly Through

Well, this was a surprise.

I don't remember when I last played the Wild format on Splinterlands, but as I managed to finally (after burning about a million vouchers) get into Champion 1 in Modern yesterday, I had some energy built up to spare. So, I decided to give it a go. I was starting in Gold somewhere, and this is the first time I was playing since they changed the rules so that there are no level barriers, and I could play my cards at full strength, without handicaps.

Apparently, whenever I played last, I ended on a three game streak, which means my first win collected 40 points, and then my next win too.

And then the next twenty five after that, meaning that I collected 1080 points in a row, going from Gold into Champion 1 in a straight line without a loss. Because I was going up against far lesser cards, even with my terrible RNG luck, I was able to bully my way through and overpower whatever I came up against. There really wasn't much standing in my way until the last few rounds in Diamond 2, but even there, there wasn't much. Perhaps what I was most surprised at though is,

I don't have any Wild cards.

All of my Wild cards, are rented out or are on land. I have nothing. But, I didn't come up against too many Wild cards either, which surprised me. However, I am guessing the further I climb, the more I would see, as currently, I am still 2125 places behind the leader @star-shroud (who happens to be from Shield of Glory too), and 4030 points away.

100 more wins in a row, and I could catch him.

I am not even going to attempt it. However, since by tomorrow I will have a few more energy to spare before the two day count to the end of the season starts, I might try to get my ass up into Wild Champion 3, just in case I am able to have another crack at a similar run in coming seasons, and I can start from Diamond-ish.

What is kind of cool is that I was able to get a "longest streak" in Wild, though I don't clearly remember what it was earlier - 22 I think. Whatever it is, it is much better than my Modern format streak record, which I got last season on one of my "good days" (I get two or three good days a season where RNG doesn't destroy me).

The changes to the points system aren't ideal in my opinion, but it has been an interesting experiment to see what has changed, and how people have changed their behaviors. I am very unsure what the new rewards system is going to do to the way people play, because it somehow seems really complicated, where every action requires me to have to think about what is best in some way. Occasionally, it is nice to be able to just play, and not think too much, like the reward chests are at the moment. It might be better overall though, but as I haven't dived in deeply yet, I will likely just wait and see after the implementation.

At least in the coming season, I will start higher up the points ladder, as I will not play anymore in Modern so I can start from a Champion 1 restart position for the first time and be at 3800 points, instead of 3500. It likely won't matter though, as I will probably lose 300 points in a row, like I have so many other times. Gaining three hundred points for me is incredibly hard in Modern though, and it takes far, far too many games to climb. I have no idea how people are able to get so many wins, but I am in 40th and the leader in first position is 2000 points ahead of me, and has battled less than half as much.

Maybe I just suck that badly.

But at least, when I am feeling sorry for myself and licking my RNG wounds from the Modern side, I can head over to Wild as a reminder of what it is like to win consistently. As long as I don't climb too high and face stiffer competition, where there are the big decks and bots that know who to use them.

I've switched over to Wild as well, mainly to bot but I realize I enjoy seeing the much more open meta in that format. So many combinations to choose from when you have access to every set.

I don't use any bots, as I prefer to play. I like Modern, but I don't do overly well there in my opinion - even though I get up relatively high on the ladder. I also don't have any A, B hardly any U - but lots of D (that are on land). So, playing in wild is hard.

Surprising to hear you report how rarely you run into Wild cards over there. With weapons training having grabbed complete control of the meta in Modern, I'd assume the same in Wild - especially with cards like Almo, Failed Summoner, Kelp Initiate, etc... that ruled the previous Modern era.

Either way, thanks for sharing your experience. Congrats on the cool 30 game win streak! No small feat in any format!

Out of 36 games, I have seen one Zaku, and only one or two other summoners. I am now in Champion 3. I would have thought that weapons training would be spammed in Wild with all those massive cards like Almo.

I don't have any maxed cards but despite that even I am playing in diamond 2 league. After spending so much time in silver/ gold league this feels refreshing. Perhaps I can be half decent at this game after all...

That sounds like a pretty good idea. When you are satisfied with your rank in modern, you can move over to Wild but it's kind of crazy how far you can bully your way up. It makes me wonder if it is worth it to rent out cards and just push up your league on one side to collect focus chests and go back to the other one for your normal fights.

I just got done by a Zaku. I don't own one. But yes, I am surprised at how far I have been able to climb - from mid gold to C3 without a loss.

I don't know what the best maximization strategy is, but I want to be able to compete at the top, and I can't do that in Wild, as I just don't have the cards for it.

Congrats on getting Champ1. I moved to Wild this season because of how insane Modern Bronze is. With my mostly Bronze deck and a lot of level 1 cards, I have managed to reach Diamond 2. So I can definitely see you just rolling over everyone under Champ in Wild.

You seem to have a good playing strategy
I’m still a learner though and it’s been long I played
I’d give it more try this week

I invested in beta cards so wild is about all I play. I hear the next updates may change the reward to favor modern format.
