Efficiently Effective

Whilst the season hasn't ended, I finished playing Modern format yesterday after making it into Champion 1 in the Modern format. This means that I will be full to start next season, but it also meant that I would have some extra Energy to have a crack at the Wild format. After neglecting it for many, many months, because I didn't have the tokens to play both, I have been trying to work my way up again from silver, just using the leftover energy.

Last season, I finished mid-Diamond 1, after the season before finishing in Diamond 3 (if I remember correctly). It has taken me a few seasons to work my way up, then kicked back for the start of the next, then work my way a little higher next round. But finally, I have made it into Champion 3 for the first time in what must be since the Energy system was introduced.

And I did it with the best efficiency I have ever got.

Now, this isn't overly representative of my skills (which are mid-range), because this is playing at the end of the season. This means that who I am playing against is likely to be above me in the rankings, but not necessarily above me in ability. So, after playing a few rounds at the start of the season somewhere, yesterday and this morning I have played the rest.

My first win of the 13-Streak was yesterday when I had 3,327 points, and my last got me to 3,726, which is a run of 399 points in a row - which I am pretty sure is the best I have ever performed. This isn't a lot for some people of course who get these crazy streaks, but for me, I feel it was good, and means that I made it through Diamond 1, in 9 matches.

That makes me happy.

Because, while I like playing, I don't like playing against bots and as Wild allows bots, a lot of these might just be automated accounts. It is far less enjoyable for me to think that, even if it isn't true. I have much preferred playing in Modern where most (I have some suspicions) of the accounts are manually played. I like when I play against my [KOG] guild mates and can drop a gg into the Trash Talk channel, or "lightly tease" when getting a good win over them. It is a lot of fun and I believe it build a better guild when we are talking about the games, asking questions about lineups and not focusing on ROI.

Automations and Battle Helpers to maximize win rates, is all about ROI.

I have never been a good maximizer at anything on Splinterlands, or in Hive in general. I perhaps unfortunately have my own code to the way I do things and it tends to be one that puts a moral position on effort. I have the sense that very little that is actually worth it, should come easily and then, if it is "easy" or doesn't take too much time to get okay results, the effort can be put in to get excellent results instead. But, the "results" are not the only aspect to be considered, because the journey matters too.

Originally, I bought some packs in Splinterlands to benefit from investing, not to play at all. This was just before summer in 2021. However, a few weeks later, I had a stroke and then decided that it might be good for my brain to learn how to play. It became part of my recovery, as it is systematic and repetitive, but has a fair amount of complexity for me to understand. And without close to a full set (only DICE and a few delegations from friends), I was playing against people with vastly different setups. This set me plenty of challenge and opportunity to improve.

While I have talked about it a fair amount, I don't think many people can fully appreciate what kinds of challenges I face daily, but at that point back then, it was even worse. However, Splinterlands gave me a chance to have a structured approach to practice and testing my own brain a couple hours a day. Looking back, it was an important part of my rehabilitation process.

And I think that my poor approach to maximization and the reason I get other value out of playing, is why I am so against the automation. Automation takes away our ability to improve at a task, or a group of tasks, and whilst in one area we might get benefit, we don't necessarily see the costs of degrading that skill to improve, especially over time. Automation can make us mentally lazy, because the convenience is so compelling.

Use a calculator enough, and our simple math skills decline - but what does that mean for our ability to problem solve in general?

Anyway, just wanted to "brag" a little (I rarely do) about making it into Champion League in Wild again, after so many months avoiding even playing it. It was fun and hopefully, I can now hold onto getting into C3 at least each season, so I can get practice playing against the older cards too, since I Brawl in Wild. Though, I Brawl in Gold, so it isn't quite as useful. Like I said - I am not a very good maximizer.

Congrats on getting Champions league on both Modern and Wild. There's still a good 2 days left on the Season, so you can aim for C1 on both. Reading how playing Splinterlands helped your rehabilitation is interesting. I can see how it just has the right amount of complexity.

I wonder why they haven't removed bots from the game overall. We already saw how effective it was in Modern. Majority of players like it, the rewards are so much higher, and the wait times aren't even that bad.

I don't have the energy! I might be able to manage it perhaps, but I would have to rent a lot to compete in Wild. I would rather start next season with full energy again.

Seems to be to keep the early gamers happy. So they can automate their sets.

congratz! I decided to sell most of my cards and focus on LAND + SPS; but maybe I'll buy into Rebellion in the future

Not a bad decision really, as the card market is very, very down.

I agree with you, and I would be more vocal in saying that automation is a systematic and structured fooling from the perspective of problem-solving learning, especially for our children who practice. I have strict rules in this regard.

I'm sure those of you who play the game are in the orientation of healing after the illness you experienced, and that is much stronger in the spirit of playing. Others play for fun and to pursue profits. While you are playing for rehabilitation, you are of great value as a player.

I am sure that someone who has a strong character to recover will recover more than those who do not have the enthusiasm to recover at all.

Best wishes for you, and I hope you are always fine.

Me too. I am very analogue with parenting. Once my daughter has built the actual skills, then she can make decisions to use supports, but only then.

I am sure that someone who has a strong character to recover will recover more than those who do not have the enthusiasm to recover at all.

The suicide rate for stroke survivors is something like 10x higher than normal. It is debilitating.

I'm not playing Splinterlands at the moment but I'm sure that no one will like to play against bots. It won't be interesting an it won't look realistic

Wow I didn't realise Splinterlands actually helped you in an interesting way! Anyway, sometimes I feel it's not always the best to optimise or maximise in every aspect of our lives - it can be quite mentally tiring. I don't think I am a maximiser on Splinterlands or Hive too. It's really just a casual hobby to me.

Yes, I agree. The people who do, seem to end up also being the ones who break under pressure. Perhaps that is part of the reason they optimize, as they are struggling in their lives.

I am like a broken record when I repeat that I am a gamer and haven’t yet found the right hive game to invest my time and attention. I do love reading about the stories from friends who are playing and enjoying though. Sounds like you have done really well and champions league must take some time and skill. I imagine it is lucrative for those stacking tokens and putting them to work too. Someday.

Have you looked into the latest @acidyo gaming project? Holozing? https://hive.blog/hive-131131/@holozing/contest-name-the-holozing-starters I have had a browser open with the details as a reminder to look deeper but haven’t made the time yet.

Congrats on rising to the top in a competitive field!

Yes. Especially for those who got in early. They were able to collect a mass and then use them to keep earning continuously. It is never enough for some of them though.

Have you looked into the latest @acidyo gaming project? Holozing?

Yep! I delegated to the account at the start and have been diligently collecting some tokens for when the game is eventually released. The token is for in-game activity, so I figure it is worth having some :)

Well consider me inspired. I will go and read the details and start with a delegation. Being a fan of gaming, blockchain AND @acidyo, maybe I better ante up and hope it goes better than watchamacallitCROPS.

Nice job! I didn't realize you could play both sides in a single season. Do you get rewards from both sides? I thought you could only get rewards from one of them. You were right though, I did finally make it into Diamond III today.

Congrats! Next season, if you can move one further up again, and then the one after - then you will start in diamond :)

Do you get rewards from both sides?

Yes, but the rewards are calculated on last season, and the cost of buying energy is on the highest side. So for instance, if I am in Champion Modern where the cost of energy is 500, the cost of energy in Bronze Wild would still be 500. This is to stop buying "cheap energy" and using it on a higher league.

The daily quest rewards are combined too - so if getting Champion rewards, playing bronze in the other side is going to be very slow progress. But, if playing both the same like Diamond on each side, both add to the quest.

The SPS rewards are quite different though. There is more to be earned in Modern I think, because there are no/less bots. Wild is filled with maximizers.

Interesting. Thanks for the info. I think I understand it. I'm actually surprised I have done so well given that these are just my GF cards. Most of my regular foil cards are being rented out.

Wow that win rate is extremely impressive mate! 27 wins to only 5 losses! That's much better than even most scholars. Way to break through to Champ in both formats! 👏👏👏👏👏
