Is it my Birthday?

Yes it is!

Nine years ago today, I was reborn as a pretty consistent writer on this blockchain. Perhaps the most consistent, if not considering those who are using "aids" to write their posts for them. I haven't missed a day posting an article since mid-2017, over eight and a half years ago. And even though it might sound conceited, I am pretty impressed with myself. If only I had been so consistent when I was at university, or with any of the jobs I have ever had.

image.png

Normally my birthday comes and goes with not much of an event, but today you will notice that I am posting this message in the Splinterlands community, which is weird for a birthday post. But, there is a reason for it, since today was the claim for the latest conflict card, Elowen Sylphie. And while normally I got my hopes up and get shafted by what they call "RNG luck" and get bugger all, tonight I got away like a bandit.

With 22 cards guaranteed, I had no guarantees on a gold at all.

I didn't have high hopes.

I go into these things trying to check my expectations, because I have been very disappointed many, many times earlier. But this time, I was more than pleasantly surprised, as while I picked up four gold foils, which would give a MAX level, I also picked up one of the three (so far) black foils.

image.png

That is a decent haul.

And so far I have played it twice and lost both rounds. But to be fair, it is early days and I am trying to shoehorn it into places it might not fit. A bit like that NFL player who is taking his ex-wife to court, because she cited the enormous size of his schlong as the reason for their divorce.

So yeah... Nine years. That also means that in a couple months from now, there will be a group who will have been here for a decade on the blockchain. Though many of those who started in 2016 have left, there is still a decent core of devs, witnesses and creators who are knocking about between blocks.

I wish there were more.

I am yet to fully comprehend why it is so hard to first get and then keep people around Hive. It is a far better place to spend time creating than the centralised platforms that are controlling users through a litany of mechanisms, with none of them being good. Yet, people go where the masses are, ,which is why you'd think at least some of the true crypto people would be supporting the decentralised platforms like Hive. Yet, there they are on X, keeping the legacy system alive and kicking.

I reckon Hive should have an OOTB solution for crypto communities to plug a community into. Something that allows them to connect up their own tokens, but leverage the Hive blockchain to manage the community aspects, the chats, the announcements, and all the information flow. It could be plugged into existing pages. Hive really should be the home of blockchain communities of all kinds, so not only does Hive benefit, but the crypto communities can break-free from centralised reliance and never have to worry about censorship or cancellation.

Splinterlands could have a more robust community experience embedded into the game interface.

But okay, enough about Hive (and Splinterlands for that matter). Now it is time to enjoy my birthday and play some rounds.

Happy 9th birthday @tarazkp! You for sure must be the most consistent Hive blogger.

I am yet to fully comprehend why it is so hard to first get and then keep people around Hive.

It really beats me. Just mention the word Crypto to people you think will fit in nicely here and it's as if you've pulled out a snake and they rush off, probably thinking this poor woman's been caught up in some crypto scam. I just laugh to myself, their loss, not mine!

Happy Hiving!

I get why non-crypto people are scared, but crypto people already in the game should be here. There are millions upon millions of them talking about decentralisation of the economy - on centralised platforms.

Congratulations on 9 years! It's a whole life. People here don't stay because they only come for money, and when they don't see it as they think, they leave. Those of us who stay are here because we're not just about that; it's not our ultimate goal.

Congratulations on 9 years! It's a whole life

Thank you. It is a whole life - The reason I always have a picture that matches the number, is that my daughter is just a little older than me on Hive :)

Having a daughter that demands time and a blog that demands much more time is something not everyone does easily, so I really don't know how you do it. You have the advantage of having the number with you, and that helps a lot. I left Splinterland due to lack of time; my real job is killing me.

Happy 9th Anniversary @tarazkp and congrats on that impressive writing streak! I really feel like so many people are missing out on Hive. I've tried onboarding quite a few people in my almost ten years here—few have joined and even fewer have continued writing. It baffles me too! I guess most just want instant gratification whether it be engagement or income.

I think this is the problem for many. Hive takes some work to be part of it, as well as some learning. Most people just want convenience, which means they will always be slave to the providers. They take the handout from the platform, and give up their ownership.

Happy 9th Hiveversary... and well done on creating yourself the most consistent contributor to the community! Your persistence is pretty much God level!

I am yet to fully comprehend why it is so hard to first get and then keep people around Hive.

You and me, both.

Perhaps it speaks to the greater world reputation/perception of Crypto as something scammy and spammy and to the idea of "get rewarded for creating" setting off immediate unrealistic expectations in people.

But — to be fair — I have also met my fair share of people who gave up on the idea of being YouTube creators because they weren't approaching Mr. Beast levels after posting a half dozen so-so vlogs...

and to the idea of "get rewarded for creating" setting off immediate unrealistic expectations in people.

I think that this is part of keeping them. I reckon perhaps there should be less emphasis on the crypto part anyway, and focus on the creativity part (for some earnings). 99.9% of social media users aren't monetized. 99.9% here are.

Oh - and happy Birthday to you too!

Happy birthday! Sir Tarazkp, I appreciate your dedication and positive energy in the Hive team. May this not roveno year bring you great achievements writing stories, anecdotes, daily from your feeling and life experience. Thank you for allowing me to be a part of this community of reflections. Congratulations 🎉

What a nice anniversary gift, gfl AND a black foil!!! Congrats!! 9 years is OG level, even more with that consistency level. I would say see you on the battlefield, but with max level legendary summoners I would get bulldozed, so... wish you luck but away from my line up! 😂

I am not that good. I have to grind away to get anywhere.

Happy HIVE birthday. I only got one of those cards. Plus now I am getting a message about my wagons being broken. I don't even know what that means. There is some kit, but I can't figure out if I have to buy it or I can build it.

To build it you need resources. I don't have any resources, so I have to buy them. One cart breaks for every card received.

Ah, okay, so I must have been running on only three wagons this past time instead of my full four. Do you need all the resources? I can only make grain and wood.

Awesome dude, happy 9th! I'm nearing up to my 8th here too :D pretty cool! Pretty wild that people are getting close to a decade for sure!

Those Splinterlands cards look awesome, I do miss playing sometimes.. but I thoroughly enjoy the free time that I have now where I'm not playing or checking it lol.

I wish more people from back in the day were here as well, but we certainly have some challenges retaining folks, particularly quality like yourself, for the long haul. Plenty of good ones have come and gone and I think their reasons for leaving are varied for sure.

One that keeps coming up is downvotes, and not just 3 or 4 here to make a point of disagreement and then people move on. The permanent downvotes are difficult to deal with. Yes I know the arguments for them and agree with them on many levels. I also agree with the arguments about them being modified in some way.

We are between a rock and a hard place though, not for lack of changing but changing it correctly so that we can still keep out bad actors, but prevent people from down voting people into oblivion because they disagree with them. Yes, again "free will, use my stake" yatta yatta. I just try to rack my brain every couple weeks to try and come up with a compromise.

My latest compromise I have yet to pen into a suggestion post.. down vote proposals.

I completely understand this :)

It is stupid when it is personal based on the content. However, without downvotes, the sludge would be unbearable. It was unbearable for a while.

The compromises so far are things like hivewatchers, but they are obviously not infallible either. Wouldn't it be nice to just have people who weren't assholes in the world?

If only I had been so consistent when I was at university, or with any of the jobs I have ever had.

Oh my gosh I so wish the same thing except with the extremely limited organisational skills that I have now XD

I was reasonably good at consistent, my organisational skills right now are pretty bad and they were several orders of magnitude worse before

I wish there were more.

At least you realise there's some still knocking around XD A week or so ago maybe I felt the need to point out to some people on snaps who were lamenting about how no one realises that snaps is the future yet even if the "oid guard" doesn't like it and why aren't there any whales here that there were actually "whales" (or at least very large accounts) using snaps (and probably the other microformats as well, I just pay most attention to snaps).

snapsnapsnap

I am yet to fully comprehend why it is so hard to first get and then keep people around Hive

From the ones I've spoken to over the years (so extremely heavy art bias):

  • constant harrassment by hivewatchers (they weren't doing anything "wrong", it was things like didn't want to "verify" or have another site to "verify" with either because they like keeping things separate or straight up didn't have one, getting "warned" or downvoted for "too similar content" because they had the audacity to to post works in progress) and non-compliance means getting "blacklisted" (and when they're new/haven't yet understood how everything works they don't realise it's a non-issue here)
  • rampant entitlement (I don't know if real or perceived, I didn't always witness all engagements outside of my select little groups) from people "expecting" upvotes/comments from the people who were upvoting/commenting the most leading them to burn out and basically not return from their "breaks"
    • only vaguely related as I don't remember what post I saw this on but I have seen a comment in my early days along the lines of "I expect your full 100% upvote" (I don't remember if they were demanding it for the comment or their latest post)
    • you've had the vote begging spam on discord
  • they came here hoping for a different type of economy or at least improvements and all they're seeing is a reflection of the current economy
    • in a couple of specific cases they were upset that it seems that in order to get anywhere you have to be "endorsed" by a larger account before people start noticing you otherwise you're practically invisible
  • perceived better engagement elsewhere (some of them were good enough to get consistent help from algorithms)
  • I don't know about now but then signup was painful (I remember thinking very hard about it and I'm a little bit tech savvy) so there will be who knows how many that were too intimidated to get past signup
  • posting on other platforms was just easier/more aesthetically pleasing (and if they forgot their passwords or want to change their usernames that's all extremely easy, now that I think about it some of them may have just stopped posting because they lost their keys and couldn't be bothered trying to rebuild another account)

people go where the masses are

Speaking purely from a marketing perspective, "you're stupid if you don't".

the other option is "I don't care if I'm stupid" which is where I'm at now XD

They might just be proselytising on X or wherever as it's most visible and have accounts on other things where they're basically preaching to the converted or they might just not know enough to know that better alternatives exist.

Hive should have an OOTB solution for crypto communities to plug a community into

Having tried to help out on projects with similar ideas but different platforms, it might still be not that easy (it's been a good long while for me and I assume stuff has changed).

anyone thinking vibe coding as a solution had better be prepared to immediately follow up with OF COURSE and VERY OBVIOUSLY they're doing some hardcore security audits because they're well aware that even if they explicitly prompt the ai to code securely and defensively it might still just do things that "just work" in a way that will break or introduce vulnerabilities, or they actually know what they're doing and all the vibe coding is just basic tedious time wasting things that still need to be done that the ai can't stuff up that is really boring and tedious to do that will be checked over and implemented

Happy hiversary :D And yay for getting the card/s you wanted, decent present, maybe it knew xD and hope you got some energy back so you could play a few games XD

I was reasonably good at consistent, my organisational skills right now are pretty bad and they were several orders of magnitude worse before

What improved them - mine still suck :D

All your points are valid in terms of retention, and there are many more. This one is interesting for the artist community.

in a couple of specific cases they were upset that it seems that in order to get anywhere you have to be "endorsed" by a larger account before people start noticing you otherwise you're practically invisible

This is how it was back in the day, as artists had "whale" patrons who paid and promoted them in their whale circles. It was necessary to get patronage to survive, hence so many starving artists. I think it is valid on Hive because it is more direct than the platforms driven through AI and algorithms. But, I also think that many artists don't earn still, but they get eyes on their work. That is needed here.

Speaking purely from a marketing perspective, "you're stupid if you don't".

Yes and no. If entering an already saturated market with something similar to the flood, what is the point?

I have no idea about implementation of an OOTB package, but it can't be that hard, can it? ;D

What improved them - mine still suck :D

A combination of the pseudorganiser and a calendar. I'd been using a schedule with alarms and all on my Nextcloud instance for as long as I've had the calendar on Nextcloud but I did the usual rookie mistake of alarms for everything so I got amazing at ignoring them. I've since pared it back to alerts I actually need (appointments and work mostly) and everything else the calendar is just on one of my screens or easy enough to get to.

The pseudorganiser is a digital variation of a bullet journal built in Obsidian. So far it's been the only type of planner/organiser/thing that's been effective (to some value of effective) probably because I made it so I guess that's what you have to do if you can't find a pre-made system that cooperates with your brain (or that your brain will cooperate with, I haven't quite worked out how that works yet).

My brain is just a giant glitch sometimes though so despite all that there are still several occasions where it will just death latch onto literally anything other than what I'm supposed to be doing.

This is how it was back in the day

It's not really too different now and while I don't think anyone would ever not be grateful for a whale patron I think some people were hoping that it would be different somehow (I'm not sure how given that even when you take away the crypto aspect you're still going to get likes/upvotes/comments/favs/whatever if someone happened to like what they saw enough to decide to stop scrolling long enough to interact).

I am reminded of this entitled narcy brat on dA who had a tantrum about how favs were worthless and people should be leaving comments instead of just faving and someone commented that they should be grateful that anyone liked their "ugly art" enough to fav it at all

If entering an already saturated market with something similar to the flood, what is the point?

Purely numbers. With so many people you have a higher chance of finding your people and getting noticed. Nobody wants to acknowledge the fact that the opposite is also true (at least for the getting noticed part). Pretty much the same reason why "everyone" is on X and Instagram and Youtube and whatever instead of here and Mastodon and Diaspora and whatever.

it can't be that hard, can it? ;D

After you've recovered from me throwing something at you from across the globe, please feel free to jump in and help, the open source world can always use more contributors XD

hope you know how to audit if you're vibe coding, that seems to annoy maintainers a lot :D

Having said that I reckon you'd be great at documentation (contributors aren't just coders).

I am yet to fully comprehend why it is so hard to first get and then keep people around Hive.

Out of the few people I have invited to Hive none has stayed here. One was here for +- a month. He left. Without making a single post or comment...Another seems to think that everything about crypto is a scam. Another one claimed that her time is more valuable than rewards she would get here. The same person is posting on facebook daily. Maybe in a few more decades people will no longer be afraid of crypto. And maybe after losing their jobs to robots they will start looking for a way to earn from home and maybe find their way to Hive... For me the fact that I can earn from home and by doing what I like/want still feels like the best thing ever.

Funny, isn't it?

I think this is a key point. I have written about it before. Desperate people, do desperate things - like come to Hive :)

Happy Day! It is awesome that you have written everyday for that long.

As far as attracting and keeping people, I think that is going to become harder as time goes on. Crypto is getting bad press lately in some news quarters. Especially on the liberal side of press where it usually had allies. It could be because of all the scams ran a while back. Or it could be because of the unpopularity of Trump and Musk and their involvement in crypto. I don't know.

Happy 9th Hive Birthday! 😀🎂
That achievement is really impressive considering that even with my super consistency I have yet to get a yearly author badge :)

Congratulations on your great pull in the Splinterlands conflicts that does look like you won a jackpot! Gold and Black full summoners is going to be worth something... The summoner looks really good as I love the re-birth ability in Modern. Also there are lots of Human cards that would benefit from the ability to attack from any position.
