Knock on the Djinn

avatar

Last night I did something I rarely do - I FOMO'd.

Okay - I "sometimes" FOMO, but after having a little bit of a chat with my Splinterlands gurus, I meditated on it for about 16 seconds and went out and bought 11 of the Djinn Biljka card to max one, if I want to. There is very little need for me to have a maxed one, as I play in lower leagues - but who knows- perhaps one day!

viski bark.jpg

But as you can see, while I could max, I haven't maxed and am instead renting them out, as I am still not playing until the next season anyway.

However, the reason that I am so interested in this card is that it is low mana and has camouflage and void abilities at level 2, where I will likely play it. This means that in the many low mana rounds, I could pair it off using Mylor as the Summoner with thorns, Failed Summoner (potentially with reflect) in the tank position and still have a +2 attack with magic, all for a total of 8 Mana with the Djinn invisible until in the tank position. Not bad!

I don't know if it was worth the 600 odd HIVE I paid for the 11 cards, but I think that this is potentially a very good low mana option with a decent attack and due to its ability to hide, is versatile for many game formats. At the higher end, it also has Weaken, so I think it will be a good addition to any set.

image.png

Now, on the rental side of things - it is hard to know where this actually sits as it is very close to the End Of Season (EOS), meaning that the rental prices are high and there is enormous demand for all cards as people look to level up for rewards - especially since the new reward cards have dropped. However, as a low-mana card that packs a punch and has some abilities, it's a winner in my books.

image.png

The new reward cards are generally pretty good and the various "power creep" cards have been noted by many - but this is what needs to happen in order for the game to continue to expand and attract new players, but this doesn't mean the old cards won't be valuable. While there are more new cards out there, it requires buying in and to get a full set might be quite expensive or take time. Also, with a lot of new players coming in, many will still be renting and be able to add value to those early cards for a long time to come - if people don't want to play them.

All of this is pay to play, but depending on expectations, one doesn't have to play in the top leagues to have fun or get financial benefits. I see that it is going to increasingly get like sports like football, where while people like to watch the premier leagues and players, they also like to play locally in lower divisions and kick the ball around in the park on a Sunday. I suspect that in coming months or years, Splinterlands will actually grow to cater for more player formats and rather than the one line of leagues, there will be many lines and options for players to join and compete, as well as have fun.

I was just showing one of my colleagues the game and he is quite interested, especially since he is able to invest a little and perhaps even make some gains on it if value increases. Plus, he likes the idea of being able to earn a little too, so perhaps he will start getting into it, which might be well times with the upcoming release of Chaos Legion packs. One of the things he is wondering is, where does the value come from - he still finds it amazing (as do I) that people are willing to spend so much on cards - even though he himself spends a fair bit on gaming himself - and has no chance of return.

This is still a bit of fun for me on the side, though I am not sure if it still qualifies as fun only, since the value of my card holdings is quite high and I did FOMO on a single card that I am not even going to play yet. However, I might start again in earnest to do the daily quests, as I wouldn't mind collecting some of the reward cards on offer, just so I have some and - perhaps I will get lucky and pick up a gold or something.

It annoys me that I am enjoying this so much...

I have been trying to have a bit more "fun diversity" in crypto.

I still don't understand the game yet..

I have to do my research and start.

Although I bought some DEC and SPS as that is all I can do.

Anyways may be its high time I started.

Hopefully the staking makes you some gains. Just be careful out there and DYOR.

The money I put in is not so much.

I did it so I don't miss out on anything..

I will do my research and see whether there is hope for the future

There is always hope for the future. But still, wisdom is required too.

It annoys me that I am enjoying this so much...

this is amusing problem.

Looks like a nice addition to your collection. I would probably want to level up legendaries I already have before buying any new ones. But I don't want to lose DEC either. I hope think in the future I will have a similar problem with Hive/Crypto:

I want to sell some and buy new pc. But it took so long to gather this. And with it I could earn more...Maybe I will keep it for now...

earning crypto is hard long work. But no one warned me that deciding to sell is even harder. 😜

I don't have many legendaries or cards in total. Don't have a full deck of anything but mostly Dice cards.

I am glad it is really hard to sell for me - hodl for life.

Gaming on Hive.. sounds interesting from your description.

I quite do not understand how it works for now. But it seems like something I should look forward to doing when I have free time.

It is a game, but not necessarily one that every one would be into perhaps. I like it these days :)

Have you shown HIVE your colleagues? Maybe it would be more interesting for them.

Some I have. Most are scared to write here. People don't like to be judged by those they know.

Sheesh! and still there are people out there who think that blogging on Hive have a very steep learning curve and is hard to master financially eh? ¡Holy Moly! hahahaha.

I think it was Vince Lombardi that said, practice doesn't make perfect, perfect practice makes perfect.

Mastery isn't time in the game, it is game on the field :)

I am still doing the daily quest, but that is mostly for the SPS rewards. I now own a few cards and am not just playing with the freebie cards, but I will for a long time be in and stay in the bronze level 2 range which is fine. I need to learn the rental thing since I now have a rare care and an epic card. Not bad since I think between my two splinterlands accounts I only have 6 cards in total.

Having played Pokemon TCG for years and Magic the Gathering for a lot less years, yep power creep is a thing that happens XD

that was fun trying to explain that one to people who were ranting about how Splinterlands is was pay to win (um? o_O) and about the power creep, I guess they haven't played CCGs before, but then again it wasn't a lot different from people on Narrative who were whining about how early adopters were unfairly advantaged, but at least some of them admitted (especially when it was brought up by others) that constantly resetting to "level the playing field" was stupid untenable.

Why are you annoyed about enjoying things so much, you're not one of those people who think it's not "real" work unless you absolutely hate every soul destroying nanosecond of it are you ;D

yes I am teasing mercilessly

@azircon talks about this a lot. I don't know enough of all the cards to see it all myself - but learning!

People want to reset the playing field constantly it seems - at least whenever they are at the slightest disadvantage in any area. No one seems to want to become a better player though.

I am annoyed that it takes time and perhaps one day - I will have to tell my wife. I spent the equivalent of 600 dollars on a digital card! :D

Edit: 2 years from now, that might be 6000 dollars on it.

Ahhh.. This is the post I was looking for. First of all the hive veteran Taraz is missing a tag! Please use #spt.

It is a necessary tag to talk about SL. This is in addition to #splinterlands tag that you are already using. SPT is splintertalk token which you can accumulate and that gets you SPS. This can help you for some intelligent minds of the game to read your post (although many of them don’t like to read or write much!)

Ok with logistics out of the way. Power creep is classic in digital card games. I talk about it often and lot. Most game maker balances power creep with some other things like rarity and “early adopters” features. In SL it reflects in the burn value. If you had a gold alpha-beta legendary check that burn value and check the burn value of a gold Djinn and you will understand. This is to compensate the early users somehow. Also a standard feature in digital card games.

I thought the Splinterlands tag was enough :) will remember for next time.

Ah, I hadn't thought about the burn value as part of this, thanks! I guess that affects collection power greatly also for things like the SPS drop.

Yes. All newer edition cards will have less burn value, and they will be less rare.

It could do, never know :D

I haven't been playing enough and don't have a lot of newer cards to notice either but I'm sure it's a thing that's happening and that would have happened eventually if they'd somehow managed to avoid doing it thus far.

Takes too much time and money to catch up with the good players (who have already spent a lot of time and money and are likely continuing to do so) and also you have to lose a lot which puts a massive dent in the ego which it would seem not many can cope with.
