A Case for the Venari Wavesmith

splinterlands-venari-wavesmith.png

One of the first cards I happened to buy was the Venari Wavesmith. I did this when I was a complete beginner with no clue at all as to which cards were worth buying. The decision to buy it was random and emotional.

You see, I love rats. Actual fuzzy snuggly pet rats, and we have four of these little fuzz balls living with my girl and me. So I just bought all Venari cards that I found for that simple reason. Suddenly my struggle to win Ranked Battles eased up and I started beating most other decks out there in the Bronze III league.

At the time of writing, my Rating is 596, about halfway to get into Bronze I, but I lack the Power to advance that far yet. You can check out my Season Goals to see what I plan to do about it.

A Case for the Venari Wavesmith

If you’re struggling on the start line of Splinterlands and are still loitering around in the Novice league, I’d like to offer a basic blueprint deck to get you started.

The most fun in Splinterlands is to build your own deck of cards and see it beating the enemy deck. But if you’ve just started out, you might need some tips to learn basic deck building and to understand card synergy and why something’s work great and other thing just won’t work.

This is just an example deck that works very well. Currently I’m beating most other decks with it, though of course it’s not unbeatable.

The best thing is that the deck is built only out of free starter cards and a free starter summoner, with the exception of the Venari Wavesmith, which can be purchased on the Splinterlands Market. This deck can easily be run with another caster instead to decent success, but my wins started to be consistent after adding the Wavesmith.

The Summoner

Starting off with the essentials is choosing the best summoner for the job. You going to want to go with Alric Stormbringer. This is a Water summoner who gives +1 Magic to all friendly casters. You’re going to run with a lot of casters so this is very nice.

The basic idea is to overwhelm the enemy with a devastating magical barrage and to take them all down before they can retaliate too hard. Boosted by Alric’s +1 Magic, even your cheapest casters are going to do a lot of damage. Casters usually are squishy little things, though. This is where the Venari Wavesmith comes in. It’s a caster who gives Protect to all friendly monsters, and thus increases their Armor by +2. Fantastic.

Spineback Turtle_lv1.png

1st Card (Tank): Spineback Turtle

When choosing a Tank for this deck, you are going to want to go cheap. You just need the tank to take a few good punches to protect all your casters. The Spineback Turtle is 4 Mana with 6 Health and 2 Armor. This is increased to 4 Armor by the Wavesmith.

Low Mana Cap Alternative
For those super low mana cap battles, you could switch the Spineback Turtle for many weaker cannon fodder monsters instead. This might require you to pick up one or two other 1 Mana monsters, though.

Go with cards such as the Albatross for 1 Mana and 1 Health, the Wavesmith adds +2 Armor to its tankability. I also run the Creeping Ooze, a 1 Mana monster that uses Slow to lower the speed of all enemy monsters. This card need to be bought, though. Great card for absolutely all decks.

High Mana Cap Alternative
For those super high mana cap battle where after filling completely up on casters and you still find yourself with a lot of points left, you can switch the Spineback Turtle to the Serpent if Eld instead. It’s a more expensive, just plain better tank. Do remember that the casters comes first, so don’t splurge of a tank if you still can add better casters.

The Rest Of The Cards

Regarding all of the other cards in the deck, you’ll want to include absolutely every caster that you can. The more and cheaper, the merrier!

Medusa_lv1.png

The Medusa is a good Water caster who might even survive a hit to deliver more that one round of damage.

Ice Pixie_lv1.png

The Ice Pixie will basically melt to a puddle when looked at, but it’s cheap and it’s a caster.

Venari Wavesmith_lv1.png

Then comes the wonderful Venari Wavesmith. It has some health so might survive a hit, and it adds +2 Armor to all friendly monsters. Even to the little Ice Pixie, making her quite a bit more sturdy. The Wavesmith is also a caster who benefits from Alric’s +1 Magic boost.

Enchanted Pixie_lv1.png

The Enchanted Pixie is basically a worse version of the Ice Pixie, but it’s a Neutral card and can be used in all decks, not just Water. It’s a quite cheap caster so it’s going to be included.

Elven Mystic_lv1.png

Last out is the Elven Mystic. It’s identical to Medusa, but Neutral. A caster who might survive a hit, and gets boosted by Alric and the Wavesmith, so it’s included.

You’re not always going to be able to fit all of these cards, but remember my tips on the choices of a good tank, include the Venari Wavesmith, and fully max out the number of casters you can fit, and I’m sure you’ll do great.

The current market price of the Venari Wavesmith is $6.82, and I’d buy it once all over again for this price. It’s your own choice and there are other ways to start winning consistently, but I regret nothing and I love my Venari Wavesmith.
