[ Dragons ] - Share Your Battle! Weekly Challenge (2)

Second challenge of the week!
Theme of the week is Dragons.

Thoughts: The Dragon decks are always unpredictable to me, in the sense that they may play melee, ranged, or magic damage through the usage of the other elements they add to their decks. However, one thing that seems to be consistent is the existence of Djinn Chwala as the tank in their decks. Well, at least in the lower ranks that happens.

Battle Rules

Standard:

No modification to the standard gameplay rules and mechanics.

Mana cost: 24

Usable elements: All

Team Composition

Role: Summoner

The go-to Dragon summoner, or rather, what people would probably be forced to play as it is the only free Summoner available for Dragon decks. Still, the (+1) Armor would still prove to be decently useful.

Role: Tank

The first in position, a great tank (with great stats as well) for facing against magic damage dealers. I chose this as I thought there was a good chance that the opponent chooses to play an Earth magic deck (based on his battle history)

Role: Secondary Damage Dealer, Backline Hitter

This is a pretty good card as it does 2 damage to the backline for just 4 mana. It also has okay stats to leave as the second man in the queue.

I was left with 4 mana and I was deciding whether to get a Khmer Princess and some Gap/Decoy monsters instead. But ultimately chose the Goblin Thief instead.

Role: Damage Dealer

The card that makes my Dragons deck really a Dragon deck. I borrowed this interesting card from a friend.

I wanted to include a Dragon card that wasn't Djinn Chwala for the challenge, so I tried something new. Zyvax Vuul has Flying and Recharge. I wasn't really sure the effectiveness of Recharge so I wanted to try it today.

Play by play

> Round 1:

Start of the battle. My opponent, too, used up all 24 mana to put out Kelya Frendul (4) leading the Serpent of Eld (7), Hardy Stonefish (5), Deeplurker (6), Merdaali Guardian (3) and Scavo Hireling (3) in corresponding order. Skipped all those summoner buffs.

Zyvax Vuul is charging up his attack. Serpent of Eld, being the fastest in the battle, slapped off my Unicorn Mustang's armour. Unicorn retaliated by dismantling all of the Serpent's armour.

Deeplurker starts his Opportunist things by targeting the Goblin Thief, removing his armour. Scavo Hireling recovered the Serpent's armour with his ability - Repair, which entices the Goblin to launch a sneak attack to remove his armour.

> Round 2:

Zyvax Vuul is ready to go. The board kinda looked like nothing happened. The Unicorn and Serpent exchanged blows again, leaving Unicorn at 7HP and the Serpent at 0 armour again. This set up for Zyvax Vuul to swipe in for the triple damage to wipe out the Serpent quickly.

Deeplurker yet again targetted the Goblin Thief and this time, finished him off. The Hardy Stonefish ended the round with another damage onto the Unicorn.

> Round 3:

My team is down to just 2 monsters on the field. The Unicorn starts to take down Stonefish's armour. Deeplurker took his turn attacking the Unicorn as well, leaving him at just 3 HP. Unfortunately, Scavo Hireling repaired Stonefish's armour yet again, who hit Unicorn again.

> Round 4:

Vuul is ready for another shot. The combined efforts of the Unicorn and Vuul finished off Stonefish at the frontline. Fortunately, Deeplurker missed when attacking the Unicorn. Another round, another time to live.

> Round 5:

Vuul is charging again. Unicorn took another meaningless act to clear Deeplurker's armour. And, amazingly enough, Deeplurker tried hitting Unicorn again, however resulting in a miss. Scavo Hireling repaired his armour yet again.

> Round 6:

Vuul is ready for a shot again. Unicorn removed Deeplurker's armour. And, with the Recharge ability, and unicorn's contribution, Vuul sent Deeplurker off the field.

> Round 7:

Vuul is charging for a shot again. However, the opponent's deck is left only non-combatants, so we all know what will happen soon.

Strategy Talk

Playing Dragons is pretty much playing with all elements, and ultimately you have to try to strategise by looking at the opponent's past decks. You cannot rely on countering the opponent using your summoner's ability with playing, well at least it is unlikely with Drake of Arhak.

Looking at the opponent's history, I noticed he pretty much played either Water or Earth decks. Since there is a good chance of them having magic damage dealers, I tried finding a card with magic damage reduction.

In this battle, I tried setting up some magic damage reduction. This results in me choosing the Earth element to back me up again. However, I am definitely not trying to pick the Djinn Chwala or the Chaos Dragon so I can feel better about myself.

Zyvax Vuul kinda carried me here and there with his high damage, although the Recharge can really bring one's downfall if my team didn't dodge as much. I just noticed, if my Unicorn Mustang dies, Vuul would be unable to fire anything.

Generally my lineup and strategy worked out well in this battle, even though I didn't manage to fight against the Earth deck. We were basically saved by the Unicorns' multi dodging skills. I hope to be able to make use of the Dragons cards and deck properly at another time

🤗

Thanks for reading!

It was fun to play around with this element as this was the least used element in my battles. We keep on going. Cheers.
