Is playing Splinterlands aka Steemmonsters worth it?

The last days of the last season in my favorite STEEM game (and at the moment in general) computer game have been quite heavy, the level of skill and amount of competitors for the top definitely grow bigger with each season. However, I still was able to win a nice amount of booster packs for my final placement in the top 25:

Besides the booster packs, I was also able to collect a huge masse of Dark Energy Crystals (DEC), the new ingame currency of the game that can be used to buy cool things such as potions to boost your chances for rare cards. And of course Orbs, a complete new set of Promo cards.

After saving the DECs for quite a while, today was shopping day!

After activating both the brilliant potion for legendary cards and the brilliant alchemy potion for gold cards, I openened a total of 26 Beta booster packs and 74 Orb packs. Keep in mind: I didn't spend a single STEEM/BTC/$ for this stuff - only stuff I won by playing Splinterlands.

And even though I was rather unlucky with the amount of legendary cards as well as the kind of gold cards, it still felt like a success. I was able to level up many cards which will boost my chances for similar winnings this season. AND: The total worth of my account went up by almost 300$!

This means that I won prices worth a three digit amount of dollars in the last weeks just by playing a game I love! Yes, in total, I probably have invested a low four digit amount into the game. But i invested it, I didn't just spend it. If I wanted, I definitely could sell my collection for more than I ever spent on it in a short amount of time.

Summed up, for me it is definitely worth it to do something I enjoy while even getting something for it. So as long as I am having fun, I will definitely continue to play. I have to say I am quite happy that I am addicted to a game that earns me some nice rewards on a regular basis, instead of letting me pay to play on a regular basis ;)

And while the game definitely has still tons of potential to exploit, the team around @yabapmatt and @aggroed definitely does a great job in my eyes. Therefore it is well deserved that the total market cap of the game points in the right direction as well:
