Battle Mage Secrets: Rise of The Commons.

RISE OF THE COMMONS

For the Battle Mage Secrets Challenge of the week, we are asked to keep the epic and legendary on the sideline as the common and rare units take the battle field. Definitely, this is a great way to test the prowess of the battle mage because we would have to make do with a lesser degree of power than we would have had with the legendary and epic units. Well, let's see if the commons can rise to the challenge.

The Combat Rules
| COMBAT RULES | ![]() |
|---|---|
| MODIFICATIONS | RISE OF THE COMMONS, LITTLE LEAGUE |
| ACTIVE SPLINTERS | FIRE, LIFE |
Despite the fact that the Rise of the Commons ruleset forces us to use just common and rare units, some of these units are still quite powerful. However, when you pair this ruleset with Little League, then it becomes quite tough to play. Given that the mana cap of the battle is 32, there's no way I can fill it up. Still, I have to remember that my opponent cannot as well and I will use that to my advantage.

LINEUP
| SUMMONER | ![]() |
|---|---|
| NAME | GENERAL SLOAN |
| SPLINTER | LIFE |
| EDITION | CHAOS LEGION |
| RARITY | RARE |
| LEVEL | 4 |
| MANA COST | 4 |
| BUFFS | +1 RANGED ATTACK |
For this battle, I can only use Fire or Life so I decided to go for life and what other summoner to work with than my trusted General Sloan. His +1 ranged attack will be advantageous for the Venari Crystalsmith who I will definitely add.
| UNIT 1 | ![]() |
|---|---|
| NAME | XENITH MONK |
| SPLINTER | NEUTRAL |
| EDITION | CHAOS LEGION |
| RARITY | RARE |
| LEVEL | 4 |
| MANA COST | 4 |
| ATTACK | 1X MELEE ATTACK |
| SPEED | 4X |
| HEALTH | 7X |
| TOUGHNESS | 0 |
| ABILITIES | SELF HEAL |
And now for a unit that I just started using more often, the Xenith Monk. His melee attack may not be so great but that Self heal ability is something that can be very useful in these type of rulesets. No heavy attacks, no problems.
| UNIT 2 | ![]() |
|---|---|
| NAME | SUNKAI HARVESTER |
| SPLINTER | LIFE |
| EDITION | CHAOS LEGION |
| RARITY | COMMON |
| LEVEL | 5 |
| MANA COST | 4 |
| ATTACK | 2X MELEE ATTACK |
| SPEED | 3X |
| HEALTH | 4X |
| TOUGHNESS | 2X |
| ABILITIES | REACH |
It's almost like a habit that when given these types of rulesets, I almost always tend to put a reach monster in the second position. In this case, the Sunkai Harvester is the only low mana reach monster that I have so I had to put him on the field.
| UNIT 3 | ![]() |
|---|---|
| NAME | CELESTIAL HARPY |
| SPLINTER | LIFE |
| EDITION | CHAOS LEGION |
| RARITY | RARE |
| LEVEL | 4 |
| MANA COST | 2 |
| ATTACK | 2X MELEE ATTACK |
| SPEED | 3X |
| HEALTH | 3X |
| TOUGHNESS | 0 |
| ABILITIES | FLYING OPPORTUNITY |
For a unit that costs just 2 mana, the Celestial Harpy has proven to be a force to be reckoned with on many cases on the battle field. That opportunity ability can really come in handy in these types of low mana battles where it is more likely to find pesky low health monsters in the middle. The drawback of having his unit is her low health but the flying ability is a compensation for that.
| UNIT 4 | ![]() |
|---|---|
| NAME | TIME MAGE |
| SPLINTER | LIFE |
| EDITION | CHAOS LEGION |
| RARITY | RARE |
| LEVEL | 4 |
| MANA COST | 4 |
| ATTACK | 2X MAGIC ATTACK |
| SPEED | 5X |
| HEALTH | 3X |
| TOUGHNESS | 0 |
| ABILITIES | SLOW |
Of course, with any battle speed is very crucial. The time mage can put my team at an advantage with her slow ability. Unfortunately, just like with the Celestial Harpy, she also has a really low health and can be a target for opportunity attack units.
| UNIT 5 | ![]() |
|---|---|
| NAME | VENARI CHRYSTALSMITH |
| SPLINTER | LIFE |
| EDITION | REWARD |
| RARITY | RARE |
| LEVEL | 4 |
| MANA COST | 4 |
| ATTACK | 2X RANGED ATTACK |
| SPEED | 3X |
| HEALTH | 5X |
| TOUGHNESS | 0 |
| ABILITIES | TANK HEAL |
I said I was going to use this unit and so here she is. The tank already has healing abilities but there's no harm helping him out with this unit's tank heal. If Xenith monk gets taken out, the next unit on the line would still have the support from Venari Crystalsmith.
| UNIT 6 | ![]() |
|---|---|
| NAME | PELACOR CONJURER |
| SPLINTER | LIFE |
| EDITION | REWARD |
| RARITY | COMMON |
| LEVEL | 5 |
| MANA COST | 2 |
| ATTACK | NONE |
| SPEED | 4X |
| HEALTH | 6X |
| TOUGHNESS | 0 |
| ABILITIES | FLYING, MAGIC REFLECT |
And at the back I have the Pelacor Conjurer. Normally I would place this guy in the front but I suspect the enemy would have a monster with sneak and the Pelacor can dodge some attacks thanks to his high speed and Flying. I hope I'm right.

Round 5:

- Time Mage weakens the final unit. Venari Crystalsmith heals up the Sunkai Harvester before finishing off the Xenith Monk.

CONCLUSION
My opponent and I had almost the same idea. One difference, though, is that I correctly anticipated their sneak attacks and they were wrong about mine. The person had placed the Xenith Monk at the back to guard against any sneak attacks I would throw but the idea just left the team with way less attackers.
My team, on the other hand, worked just fine. It's easier to guard against sneak than opportunity and so I had to work with Celestial Harpy. That unit made a huge difference for my team.
The Pelacor Conjurer at the back was also a good idea. Thanks to Time Mage's slow, he was able to dodge an attack from the sneak monster who had his speed reduced to just 1x.
All in all, it worked out fine and I came out of it victorious.
