Renting for profit | Bought a Land Plot

Ever since the last season began with the changes in the reward system, I’ve been actively renting cards and climbing the ranks. I’ve previously written about renting and how it has helped me learn and get better at playing the game. What I have not talked about though is if renting is even profitable.

Before last season ended, I was convinced that I was not going to make much profits because I was renting to play in silver and gold for bronze league chests. I was cool with that because I just wanted to get to a higher league so I could potentially earn better rewards this season.

This season I have been earning gold chests. At the beginning of the season I was playing in the Bronze league and so earning chests was difficult. Still much of a newbie, I didn’t understand why until I got to learn about Reward Shares and how they are calculated.

So it turns out that with the current system, rshares are required to earn daily and seasonal chests and these rshares increase as we go up the leagues. This explains why I was able to earn up to 9 daily bronze chests by winning one battle in silver last season. It also explains why I could not compete in bronze for gold chests without significantly hurting my ECR.

With the current rewards system, players are basically supposed to play in a league they can comfortably compete in. Players are also incentivized to own or rent cards because using starter cards reduces rshares. This reduction will even be exponentially greater when the new system rolls out as explained in This Post.

To earn both daily and season chests faster right now it would be logical to play in the same league as your chests' level. This means that, as I am earning gold chests, I should play in the gold league so I can earn the chests faster. The problem now is that I like to rent max level cards for the league I am playing in so I can totally dominate. If I advance to gold, I will definitely earn chests faster but I'm not sure of the profits yet. So far, I've been making decent profits playing with rented max level silver cards in the silver league for gold chests.

For example, here is the total amount of DEC I spent renting cards on the 21st;

I spent 1443.104 DEC to rent cards for silver. I earned 10 gold chests and pulled out over 5000 DEC.

From this, it's clear that playing in the silver league for gold chests is profitable even though it takes longer to earn chests. It should even become much more profitable when the new changes roll out and I can earn daily silver chests and season gold chests.

A few days before the season ends, I'll advance to gold and play there. If I can compete there with my level of rentals, then I'll consider playing there in the following season. If not, I'll probably just stick to playing in silver for gold chests until I'm comfortable with playing in higher leagues.

I have to mention that, although I have made profits on several days with the gold chests, somedays I can pull out a small amount of DEC or rewards in general that don't cover the costs for that day. However, it is possible that the cost for renting for several days will be covered in just one day. Overall, I have made more DEC this season than I have spent.

Land Plot Purchase

For the past month I've been learning a lot about splinterlands and one thing that I've been really interested in is the Land Expansion. I've read a lot of articles and watched a lot of videos on the topic. I got tired of waiting and so today I finally bought a PLOT.

So yeah I am officially a land owner and I'm not selling! With a capped supply of 150,000 PLOTS and so much possibilities, I think Land might be one of the best investments in the game and so I'm really bullish on it. I bought the PLOT for 443.77 HIVE or about $178 at the time.

I really believe in this game, the team behind it and the community. Let's wait and see what the future holds for splinterlands.
