Accidents... Accidents... Accidents

source

Road accidents remain a tragedy that continues to sweep lives and entire societies. Every new day registers its portion of the horrendous crashes that, if only a small bit more of safety had been effected, could have been easily prevented. This high number of accidents shows us a reality where our transport systems stand heavily flawed. It is unfortunate and a bit irritating to me that most of the roads and highways are still unsafe despite many technological advancements. We're in 2024 for crying out loud.

Self-driving cars may provide a solution to this issue though. Such vehicles are fitted with both sensors and software that, while more advanced, reduce human error, which is most often the cause of accidents. Self-driving cars are likely to cause massive crash reduction because of the elimination of distractions, tiredness and drunkenness.

Besides self-driving vehicles, technological advancement in vehicles can be used to ensure safety. Have you seen Mercedes Benz safety system, it's getting really really good.

Features such as automatic emergency braking, lane-keeping assist and adaptive cruise control are some way in the right direction. But all these should not remain as options, instead they should be inbuilt features of all vehicles. We need to innovate continuously to prevent accidents and save lives.

I dare to say these safety features are more required in cheap cars than luxury ones because cheap cars are a lot more on the road than luxury ones. It's more than just the technology itself, it's about making it available to everyone. At present, most of these safety features exist solely in top models, which means that most car drivers are excluded. In getting toward safe streets though, we likely have technological prospects of spreading these to anyone on the road and not just those who can afford a luxury car.

Another important thing is education, to inform people about the benefits of these technologies and how to use them. Quite often, there's usually a learning curve to new technology and without enough education, even the best safety features go unused or misused.

If we are going to dramatically reduce traffic fatalities, automakers, lawmakers and safety advocates must work in cooperation. It's only by working together that we can be sure these technologies are developed, regulated, and put into practice in ways that yield the greatest lifesaving potential.

Self-driving tech and advanced vehicle safety features are long overdue. It's about time we push for more advances to make sure that the roads are safer places and to reduce the losses road carnages account for. Embrace the technologies that help us make our next great strides into the future with fewer accidents and safer roads.

While I appreciate the self driving car thing - it’s really only a benefit in a major city than it is elsewhere. Cities like New York and others where there’s extreme population densities would be the best use case for it but even then it’s likely to be unbelievably difficult. There’s a lot of datapoints going on at once and when you think about it, it goes to show you how fucking STRONG our brains are, and how incredibly sophisticated it is! It’s taking in those thousands of datapoints a second and keeping us relatively safe.

On the same token - I wish I wasn’t so pessimistic about the powers that shouldn’t be using this tech in nefarious ways. We know they want to control us, and this is one more step for them.

I think where we could benefit is making software for this fully open source and that will take time, but that would be my best hope for this being a good thing.

well I do see your point good friend... This technology could easily be used as a control tool as well... I side with you on this one... I hope it can be open source
