Episode 91: A JeffOpensCards Conversation

Welcome back to the People's Guild for another episode. In this one we find ourselves paying a visit to the great Midwest, USA, as we make a pitstop just outside Green Bay, Wisconsin to sit down with one of the whales of the game, @jeffopenscards.

It's a conversation we've been meaning to host for quite some time now, so glad to be able to present it to you all here today. We take some time to get to know Jeff and his business ventures, one that is firmly rooted in one of the more traditional trading card games, Pokemon, before making our way to all things Praetoria.

An enjoyable conversation all around - hope y'all enjoy meeting Jeff, as well!

Until next week!

Potential Collaboration and Future Plans

Bjangles and JeffOpensCards discussed potential collaboration, with Jeff expressing interest in a system for efficient editing and pausing of transactions which Bjangles agreed to assist with. They also touched upon tokens going live soon and acknowledged the work of a Venezuelan community using hive. The conversation touched on various topics including the process of making cheese curds, the idea of creating proxies of someone's plans, and the concept of blockchain technology. Jeff recounted his recent experiences and changes in his business and personal life, including moving his business into his parents' home and later into a warehouse. The conversation concluded with Jeff considering the idea of buying boxes on the blockchain.

Pokemon Card Business Model Diversification

The team discussed their business model focused on Pokemon cards, with plans to diversify their customer base through platforms like Tiktok, Amazon, and Twitch. They also touched on the impact of Covid on the game's accessibility and the constant expansion of the game's player base. Additionally, they shared personal experiences and strategies related to collectibles, noting the surge in demand during the Covid-19 pandemic. Towards the end, they discussed the balance between pleasure and business in their involvement with Splinterlands, acknowledging the struggles and experiences related to playing a card game. However, no specific decisions, alignments, next steps, action items, or open questions were discussed.

Gaming Ranking System Changes Discussed

Jeff, Bjangles, and Hepthorn discussed a new ranked system, with Jeff sharing his gaming statistics and expressing hope to move up to Champ this season. They also discussed the impact of changes in the game, including a new rewards system and a proposed change that would force players to a 50% win rate. Hepthorn expressed concerns about these changes, such as the impact on player motivation and engagement, the lack of a level playing field, and the potential for high-skilled players to leave the game. Bjangles agreed that these changes were significant and assured that further adjustments could be expected.

Gaming and Asset Management Discussion

The participants discussed their experiences with gaming and asset management. Bjangles noted the rarity of certain cards in their game, while JeffOpensCards shared his decision to stop renting out his cards due to time constraints and his interest in reallocating his assets. JeffOpensCards also shared his experiences with cryptocurrency, including his investment in Bitcoin and NBA Top Shot, and his strategies for maximizing his earnings. The discussion concluded with JeffOpensCards expressing his interest in selling some of his Spiral Lands assets to fund other activities within the ecosystem.

Card Collecting and Trading Strategies

JeffOpensCards shared his experiences with card collecting and trading, highlighting the butterfly effect of these interactions on his life. He expressed his temptation to sell rare cards for profit but also his desire to hold onto them for competitive play. He discussed the market value of these cards, particularly the gold ones, and his regret for not buying them when they were available. JeffOpensCards also discussed his strategy of holding onto gold cards for competitiveness and his plan to open more glass cases using his merits since the option to buy potions with merits was reinstated. The team also discussed the upcoming changes to the game's burn mechanic. JeffOpensCards explained that the current method of burning gold cards for DEC will soon be replaced with burning for merits. He also shared his plans to further enhance his main account with more gold foil cards and legendary trainers. The discussion concluded with Bjangles asking JeffOpensCards about his strategy for acquiring packs of Chaos Legion, to which JeffOpensCards responded that his main focus was to stay competitive in the game by updating his deck.

NFTs for Lego Sets and Sports Cards

JeffOpensCards discussed his experiences with buying and selling vouchers and cards in OpenCards, noting the fluctuating prices and challenges of understanding the system. The conversation shifted to Splinterlands, where JeffOpensCards highlighted the importance of asset ownership in web 3 gaming. He also shared his idea of using NFTs to facilitate transactions, such as selling Lego sets, which could potentially simplify the process of buying, selling, and shipping physical goods. The participants agreed that there could be potential in creating an NFT business around Lego sets. The discussion concluded with the potential of blockchain-based NFTs and their application in sports cards and other collectibles.

Improving User Experience and Business Strategies

Bjangles, Jeff, Hepthorn, and JeffOpensCards discussed various ways to improve user experience and business strategies. Bjangles suggested exploring more business ideas like selling Minecraft maps as NFTs and selling physical merchandise related to the Spellbook game. Jeff expressed concerns about public perception of blockchain and the potential conflict of interest. He also suggested revamping the referral program for his virtual card business and improving user experience with features like one-click rentals and easy credit card purchases. They all agreed on the need for improvements in user experience and clearer communication. A proposal to increase the cost of the spellbook to include rebellion packs was discussed, along with the idea of a buddy system to help navigate technical issues. JeffOpensCards proposed a mobile-only version of their game to attract new players and offer rewards for playing.

Card Release Frequency and Player Interest

Hepthorn, Bjangles, and JeffOpensCards discussed the frequency of card releases in games and their impact on player interest and revenue. They considered unlocking higher-level cards to increase engagement and the challenge of keeping up with frequent releases. The possibility of releasing full sets was suggested as a potential compromise. The impact of card releases on the game's meta and the secondary market was also discussed. Concerns were raised about potential card shortages and the high entry cost for the game. JeffOpensCards responded that the situation was complex and it was unclear how an increase in players would affect the staking requirements and the value of the game assets.

Sps, Token Price, Card Prices, Bitcoin, and Battle Royale

Jeff, Bjangles, and Hepthorn discussed the potential value of spots (sps) per win and the impact of token price on their earnings. They also touched upon the issue of card prices and the potential demand from players. Jeff expressed his hope for a significant increase in sps value and his intention to sell some of his sps before it reaches $8. They also had a discussion about the fluctuating value of Bitcoin and potential investment opportunities. The conversation wrapped up with Bjangles noting a rise in their stock value, which pleased Hepthorn.
