Well, I did some research and it is quite interesting learn how professional wrestling developed into what it is today.
From being a serious sport to becoming a little more scripted and entertaining?
Firstly, let’s look at the different styles of wrestling that existed in those days:
- Ireland collar
- elbow wrestling
- Greco-Roman wrestling
- catch wrestling
It’s amazing how each style had its own flavor and methods.
Then we have the carnival scene.
Did you know that many wrestlers back then used to wrestle on carnivals?
People would gather around to watch these matches, and sometimes the outcomes were fixed to make things more exciting.
It was more like live movies!
However, with time, promoters also became part of wrestling industry. They realized they could manipulate matches for increased fan satisfaction. They even gave characters to wrestlers which made it more fun.
Now, I know what you are thinking:
Did people know that wrestling was fake?
Yeah, kinda.
I mean, there were always rumors and attempts to expose the fakeness of it, but at the end of the day, people just wanted to have fun.
That is what wrestling did, it entertained people.
What interested me most was how wrestling changed with time. TV came out and wrestling evolved.
They added interviews and more flashiness in order for it to appeal even more to viewers from their homes.
So, why do people still love wrestling even though they know it's not totally real?
Well, like I have already said, I think it’s because wrestling is more than a sport. It’s kind of like theater or storytelling, where you get into the characters and their conflicts that make it so much fun to watch.
In conclusion, professional wrestling evolution is a mind-boggling journey.
From its humble beginnings in the carnival circuit to the glitzy world of TV, wrestling has always found a way to keep fans coming back for more.
