Splinterlands Chaos Legion Pre-Sale announcement | Bought 2k SPS today

My plan to buy Chaos Legion was clear

For a while, I had envisioned that I would not participate in the pre-sale of Chaos Legion, even if that meant that I would not receive any special promo cards, as I read some rumors that might be the case. I kept thinking what the benefit would be to buy the packs upfront, losing all the funds, but not being able to open them for another month (or maybe longer?). I was quite sure that I would not prefer that over receiving a daily SPS airdrop and would wait until the packs were on the open market.

I thought this would give me the most advantages as a new player building a new deck from the new collection of cards as the old collection is just way too expensive for me to start buying. I still assumed at that point the new packs would stay around the 2 bucks area, maybe 2,50 dollars otherwise. My plan was quite set, when the voucher system would go live, I'd sell off my vouchers as much as possible and buy the packs after the presale instead. I assumed the number of vouchers would be 1 SPS staked 1 voucher (1x) as well.

Long wait for an update

And then the bomb dropped today, the packs would be doubled in price compared to the old card collections, meaning 4 bucks each. They can be paid with SPS, DEC, or credits at least, where SPS payments would give you a 10% discount. Hmm, that instantly made me think that people would most likely prefer using SPS for the pack sales instead of DEC.

Until today I had been holding quite a good amount of DEC, only selling off smaller bits sometimes, but still keeping the rest thinking I'd need the DEC to buy the packs in the foreseeable future. All the airdropped SPS instantly got staked and I was happy with the amount I was able to stake in this short period of time, because I didn't start earning from airdrop day 1 like many other players. I've seen SPS drop from the 44 cents range to the lower 20 cents, and (not important) slowly go back up again!

The official update contained a lot of information

Honestly, I really had to think about everything that I just read when I opened the article. I will link it here in case someone didn't read it yet. The information about the price of packs wasn't the most important one in the update, all the information about the use cases of SPS in the future, as well as the 10% discount on packs when using $SPS to pay for your purchase is something I had to think about a bit longer, meaning, what would this do with the price of SPS, and what would happen to the price of DEC, that was once pegged 1000 DEC = 1 dollar, but has risen far above this pegged price.

Often I've been a bit wary during dips that the DEC value of my portfolio would drop hard close to its peg again, meaning that the big bag of funds I had reserved to buy myself a nice deck when CL released would be worthless overnight maybe. Thankfully, that didn't happen (yet), but it still felt a bit uneasy. It's a risk, like every crypto, obviously.

SPS Utility

It was written that the voucher system for CL presale pack purchases, in addition to the 10% discount for these presale packs with SPS tokens is just the beginning of adding more utility for the SPS tokens. Although adding more utility defo sounds like a very smart thing to do, for the value of the token as well as the new possibilities it brings to the game, I do wonder if this voucher system won't be a dealbreaker for a lot of new players. I tried to do some simple maths, and even with a few thousand staked SPS, it seems that I will barely get close to my goal of the 100 vouchers needed. I don't want to add more costs to the already higher-priced packs of 4 dollars (-10% paying with SPS), it would suck to see this discount be eaten away thanks to the voucher system. Maybe I just can't grab my head around it all yet, it's very possible, so I will sleep on it to see what my thoughts are tomorrow.

I did something very drastic today

After some calculations and considering the DEC (soft) peg, I thought it would be smarter to have the funds in SPS rather than DEC, and sold most of my stash for HIVE and then bought 2000 SPS right after.

It means the airdrop is now much much lower, but I do get some farming rewards in SPS thanks to staking them. I'm very curious how much SPS I can claim after 24 hours with this stake. I will probably keep adding to the stake as much as I can in the next month, hoping that it will all be enough to at least by 100 packs.

New ranked play format

This was an interesting part in the update as well, I remember reading something about that vaguely but thought I will learn about that when it's released. Seems like I got some more information about that reading the update today, namely that we will be able to choose if we play the Wild or Modern format in ranked battles in the future. One of them (modern) only allows cards from Untamed, Azmare Dice, and Chaos Legion editions as well as the newer reward cards and any new cards added to the game.

And the Wild format allows all cards from Alpha to Chaos legion and beyond. For me, it seems that I don't have much to chose from as the deck contains the free Untamed set we get to play when buying the Spellbook, as well as some reward cards, and hopefully soon (if I can make it happen with the voucher system) Chaos Legion.

So today was a day of drastic decisions and still have a lot of questions unanswered

Probably nobody can answer the questions I have properly as time will have to tell how things evolve over the next months. I saw a few calculations in the Splinterlands discord server and it was clear that if these are correct, I will not even reach 50 vouchers by the time the presale ends. It kind of makes me sad and wished I had more funds to move around to build a bigger stake in SPS. Let's see what happens.

What are your thoughts on the updates? I didn't discuss it all here, as the post is already a bit lengthy as is. Please share your thoughts in a comment below..

FOMO is real and I wanted to rush to snap some SPS from the market. Still, I've calmed myself down and even if I see a great future for SPS, it is still worth having a balanced portfolio. Nevertheless, if we get to the $1 price point, I think this will reward many of us plentiful.

Thanks for the token of appreciation :)

FOMO is defo real, I did snap een bag of SPS as I figured it will rise in price, but I should have just looked at the market for a day to see what would happen. Either way, I also left a bag of HIVE after selling DEC, and will most likely use that to buy a bag of DEC bag when the price is right. I rather spread it out a bit as well.

I'm just very worried that I will never be able to get enough vouchers to buy 100 packs. And even after the presale the vouchers stay in place? I feel quite bummed reading that honestly. But then again, it may change or turn out not that bad.. We'll see..
