Splinterlands New Approach | Building a deck and renting out cards

The end of another season

I was quite excited and also a bit sad to open last season's rewards, simply because at that time I knew this was the last chance of getting a nice filled chest with DEC, as I'm playing in bronze 1. I was still stuck in the mindset of not being able to do much and getting stuck at this level without any options to work my way up. Until I got some fresh ideas after a good night of sleep. I'll get to that in a bit, let's first check my season rewards as they made me happy!

Not only did I get AN epic, but I also received the same epic twice! And this card isn't the cheapest, it's around 2 bucks. After not seeing much worth mentioning in the daily rewards, this was refreshing. I didn't find any dec in there, but these 2 babies made up for that even though I haven't played the dragons myself yet, I know they might get valuable. To me it seems like it's a great card, but I'm no expert at all!

The new approach on earning in Splinterlands

As I said, a good night of sleep brought me some fresh ideas and I decided to take a risk and try this out. I read in the Splinterlands discord that the Alpha cards have a much higher dec value and it made me think to buy some for the higher Collection Power and maybe to rent them out as well. I decided to buy the cheapest Alpha card in the market and put it in the rental market. Within minutes it got rented out!

I got excited and bought another one with the simple thought that once Chaos Legion comes out, I will probably be leveling some summoner and need leveled cards. When I saw the card only needed another one to get to level 2, I felt like it was a no-brainer to keep only one, and added number two to my collection.

Fun fact: I've never even played Pit Ogre, this was purely an investment and collection building strategy.

I was stuck with a life quest

It always bothers me as I can't seem to play it quickly and miss a few key cards in there. So I started looking at Alpha Life cards and found the Truth Defender interesting. It was expensive though, I think above 60 bucks, so not one that I'd quickly buy without testing. I rented one myself for one day in the market and the verdict was: I need this card!

When playing the Truth defender I started to notice that I receive a bonus for playing Alpha/Promo card.

It was 10%, which made me even more excited to buy Alhpa and/or promo cards to receive more rewards in Dec for winning. So I decided to take another risk, as I thought this card would make me super happy playing the life team:

It was an expensive baby to buy and I'm still not sure if I want to keep it or will swap it for its beta version. It's currently in the market, in case you're interested. Why? Because I started to notice that the rental market is pretty booming and for that money, I could have bought myself the beta version and a bunch of other cards which I could use and rent out.

I leveled up one league

At least, I didn't actually level up yet, as most cards were placed in the market, but I noticed that I had enough power now to reach bronze 2.

I checked the CP needed for bronze 1 and saw this was 5000 CP. My goal was now to buy enough cards in the market to have the option to play my account to bronze 1, so that I'd have more rewards every season.

I used my DEC stash

Remember that I mentioned buying 2000 SPS earlier this week after the announcement? At that time, I felt like I had to keep the rest of my DEC as it was rising in value. And then it hit me, the higher the DEC price, the less DEC I pay for these cards. So instead, it motivated me to buy more cards. At some point, I noticed my power reached above 5000 so my goal was reached. It felt good!

Of course, all the cards that are in the rental market, aren't counting towards my own power anymore, but towards those renting the cards from me. Which is fine, I decided that I should keep investing and find a healthy balance between the cards that are solely meant for me to play, to strengthen my teams, and some that are mostly for renting out. I do try to find cards that I think will make me happy when they aren't rented out so that I can at least play them myself if I take them out of the rental market.

Rentals move quickly

This screenshot was taken yesterday, and as you can see there are just a few leases on there, some from Thursday (that ended after a day), and by Friday, there were also 2 leases of almost 2 weeks. Now we're talking!

Now check what happened in the next period of two hours:

It kept going, so I kept buying as I started to see a whole new strategy to build my deck. I felt that these cards were all too expensive for a newbie player to build a decent deck until I noticed how booming this rental business is and I'm all for building a passive income, so this is actually a win-win situation for me. Yes, I've read @aggroed's @splinterlands Tweets about the rental business, but when you feel something is too expensive for you to start with, there's not really a reason to look into it. I'm very happy though, that I now see a new way of starting to build a deck and earning in #splinterlands.

To be honest, my mind was locked, and I felt I needed to keep the little DEC I had left (from when I sold and bought $SPS) to make sure I will get SPS airdropped. But why keep this for the few SPS I get dropped if I can build a deck, and meanwhile earn a passive income in the rental business instead? I needed to look beyond what I knew and this is what I did.

Not a get rich quick approach, but a long-term vision

I know I won't get rich from the small amounts I earn from each card rented out, but imagine that by the end of next year, all these cards have been rented out enough days for me to be able to say, this card has earned back my investment. Then I still keep the card, and keep using it, it's still mine, and I can still earn money from it long after this moment. On top of that, I can now play my quests with less stress as I have a few good cards added to my teams:

The life team favorites currently are Air elemental, venari crystalsmith and lunakari mistress. They made my life quest so much easier yesterday!

I wondered how this eploding rats card could add something to my team as it only had one life, but damn that a card! I truly love it! Will probably use that one a lot and also start to love playing fire (hopefully).

I'm truly happy to be part of this Splinterlands journey

And I see so many new possibilities that I hadn't seen before. I feel the very supportive and active community behind the game helps a lot. People think with you if you wonder how to do something, they give you advice and the posts on Splintertalk are filled with good info to find out some new strategies and great cards! Don't forget to delegate some of your $SPT earnings to @monster-curator when writing a Splinterlands post, as it will earn you some SPT every day!

Thank you for reading, have a wonderful weekend, and see you next time!

Awesome idea, This has actually been my plan the last 2 season mind you I didn't rent alpha cards but maybe that's the next step🤔.

Thanks for sharing

Yes, you have to check if it's worth the value for the extra dec bonus. I have to admit, that many cards are just too expensive for the convenience I'd get from them (at least what I expect) while the air elemental was so nice to have and what a relief to be able to play it lol. So if I won't sell it, at least it's a card I will play a lot...

Good luck finding the best approach for you :) and thanks for stopping by and leaving a comment!

Yeah I have been wondering how the splint in cards are gonna be like. If alpha and beta go up more for being in a league of their own.

Sounds like a plan!

I think gradually buying is much better for the long term instead of just depending on rented cards. For myself, i need to level up my summoners - water and earth in particular but they are so pricey. I have to tackle this with much thought. Haha

All the best!

Yes, I suddenly saw this new opportunity that I didn't think of before. I was blindsided honestly as I kept reading about needing 10k dollar for a silver deck. I think looking at my rentals now, I'm not even far away from silver 3 now. And I defo didn't spend more than a few hundred bucks.

I do admit, that I didn't buy nice cards for every team yet, but focused on a few (for now).

Good luck leveling your deck :) I used the voucher calculator and I saw that with my stake now I should get around 35 vouchers lol, so not much Chaos Legion for me if vouchers are high priced.. but we'll see how it goes , at least I have a plan B which is already earning me back a bit of my spendings :)

Great strategy here! The alpha cards are indeed a good investment, I still have a few in my collection from way back when. I wish I had more of them to get the alpha cards up a level or two but still having some is good!
Glad you got the chance to invest in some SPS and get some good reward cards for your efforts!
