🌓Thoth in Splinterlands🔥: Play Update, Guild Brawl Report 🍕 & Card Giveaway #3 🎉

Introduction

This week took an unexpected turn when after 2+ years of avoiding it, Covid 19 finally caught up with our family. First, it was just one of us, but it quickly spread to all of us. And now we're home isolating together...joy.

I'm on day four, at the time of writing, and still experiencing some heavy brain fog and other common symptoms. I've never really experienced being sick like this before. To everyone sick with Covid at the moment, I hope we all feel better soon.

I'm really excited about a few things I want to cover in this post. And happy to have something to occupy these long uncomfortable hours. I'll begin with a brief update of my Splinterlands play experience and where I am in the game. Then we'll move on to a review of my fourth brawl with the Hive Pizza Guild: PIZZA 1 The Stuffed Crust. Last, we'll finish this post with my 3rd card giveaway, and reveal the WINNERS from Giveaway #1 and Giveaway #2.

Play Update

In my last report and play update, I noted that one of the things I learned from my first month playing Splinterlands, was that the competition at the beginning of the season is tough, with everyone trying to climb ranks. And one of the lessons learned I purported was to wait 24 hours or more to let the competition thin out before playing at the start of a new season.

But with the changes to the Ranked Rewards system just released, I couldn't resist. I ignored my own advise and started playing as soon as the season started.

I got Earth as my first daily focus of the season and rented Sacred Llama Mage and Kron the Undying for the first time to help in climbing the ranks. The Llama/Kron combo is powerful for sure, and it was nice to be on the other end of things for once. But the skilled can beat it and did. And I was an easy target, trapped into using the combo whenever the mana ruleset allowed. In hindsight, it was fun combo to try once but I probably won't spend the DEC to rent it again.

This season, I've mostly been playing in Silver 1, earning Silver daily focus chests and Gold EOS chests. Over my last two 24 play periods I earned 15 and 16 Silver chests respectively.
The rewards might be nothing to write home about, but I'v enjoyed playing in Silver and the associated lower rental costs compared to Gold. I'm still trying to figure out the right league I should be playing in, but Silver seems about right with my limited card pool.

Guild Brawl Report

I am happy to present the report of my fourth brawl with my amazing guild:

As a new player participating in brawls, I learned about the power of Gladiator cards through many defeats and very few wins. After our last brawl, I had enough MERITS to buy my first Gladius case.

My plan was to utilize Relenor Cleaver's 4 attack and Reach ability whenever possible. I tried to make sure I prepared the complimentary water cards needed. My hope was that with a few Gladiator cards in my arsenal, I'd win a few more Brawls this time round.

In this Brawl, I played in Frey 1 with Novice League level caps and all cards playable from Chaos Edition. As a new player working on building my collection, I really like playing within these parameters as it allows me to approach each battle with options to choose from multiple splinters. However, you'll notice in my Brawls below I used Water whenever possible in order to bring in Relenor Cleaver.

In my shared battles below, I title each Brawl with the name of the Gladiator card I and my opponent uses to help familiarize myself with the Gladiator cards and the strategy around them.

Brawl Link #1🔮 Mana Cap: 36	❗️Rulesets: Equal Opportunity,Healed Out
	In my first battle with Relenor Cleaver I face a menacing Grum and Gorth combo. My Wave Brood was clutch in last position soaking most enemy hits for 2 rounds, allowing my monsters to take out the enemy back line. Result: Winner ✅

Brawl Link #2🔮 Mana Cap: 16	❗️Rulesets: Earthquake, Lost Magic
	I don't think my set-up on this was particularly strong. I got lucky my opponent did not have or play Gladiator. Between the damage from Earthquake and Relenor's 4 attack axe, they quickly fell in 3 rounds. Result: Winner ✅

Brawl Link #3🔮 Mana Cap: 58	❗️Rulesets: Noxious Fumes, Taking Sides
	This was my first encounter with Quara Towershead. 3 magic damage plus heal and bloodlust abilities. This match is a demonstration of Quara's power as she decimated my team. Result: Loser❌

Brawl Link #4🔮 Mana Cap: 99	❗️Rulesets: Equalizer
	We face Quara Towershead again, and again she is powerful. But I think I made some structural mistakes in my line-up because my team really gets evicerated. Result: Loser❌

Brawl Link #5🔮 Mana Cap: 99	❗️Rulesets: Healed Out
	I face Captain Katie for the first time. Luckily most of my units attack first and we take out the enemy Chaos Knight and Sunkai Harvester and Pelacor Arbalest in Round 1.A swift victory follows. Result: Winner ✅

Brawl Link #6🔮 Mana Cap: 12	❗️Rulesets: Stampede, Up Close & Personal
	In addition to the low mana melee only restriction, only Dragon and Earth Splinters are active. An embarrassing defeat. I make a big error in choosing Alvar as his void armor is useless in a melee fight. Loser❌

Brawl Link #7🔮 Mana Cap: 58	❗️Rulesets: Spreading Fury, Heavy Hitters
	Relenor Cleaver vs Flaguilon Rein. This was a good fight. In the end, it was three against one. Flaguilon Rein stood alone and took out three of my powerful units. The power of Blast + Bloodlust is impressive. Loser❌

Brawl Link #8🔮 Mana Cap: 29	❗️Rulesets: Noxious Fumes, Close Range
	I really had hoped to secure a fourth win here, but it was not to be. Worse, my opponent did not even use a gladiator. That their Void Dragon did not suffer from poison was key. I need to study the Dragon Splinter. Result: Loser❌

I won three out of eight brawls. I still have a lot to learn, but this is a new record for me! With only got 2 wins in previous Brawls three feels like a small step of improvement. No doubt, having Gladiator cards played a big role.

In reviewing the above matches, I think I overused Water Splinter, when I should have been more adaptable to the ruleset at hand. I wanted to use Relenor in every match and that trapped me in some ways. Brawls are tense, once that timer starts, the pressure is on. I need to do some better preparation beforehand.

I'll be able to afford my second Gladius pack after the next Brawl. Based on my most memorable beatings thus far, I'm really hoping to pull a Chimney Wallstop, Quara Towershead, or Flaguilon Rein. There is always hope.
