Splinterlands Leaderboard Rewards
Last weeks I wrote a review about the changes that were recently introduced to Splinterlands
The main change being the power levels and leaderboard rewards. In this, I criticized the way that there currently isn't a strong incentive for players to advance to the next league as it is generally impossible to get a slice of the leaderboard rewards. This means that players in general will have to try to take on the next lower league.
After some initial playing it actually didn't feel too bad; I was winning most of the battles and it wasn't too long before I was in the top 50. Loot chest rewards in this system currently aren't that much of an incentive as you will often only find potions or DECs. Therefore the main incentive currently are the leaderboard rewards in my opinion. But after some more playing I noticed that it was quite exhausting and not a lot of fun to compete for the top spots on the leaderboard.
The problem: My cards are "too good" for 98% of the players, but wins give on avergae only a +5 rating in rank (as most players have a much lower rank). This means that you literally have to engage in hundreds of battles to get into the top 20 of the rank. Yet there is no challenge until then - it is a grind with the same cards that win 98% of the time. That's no fun... Even worse, when one loses a battle due to a mistake or there is an error on the blockchain network (which happened quite often for me), one loses 30+ in ranking which is equivalent to about 6 games of more grinding.
Currently, these changes have made this game into a grind for me. Instability (perhaps also on my side) means there can be a lot of frustration for losing a game without one's fault so to speak. I wish the gaming experience could be improved as I don't think I am the only one feeling this way. Nevertheless, I obviously still feel that the game has potential...
