Splinterlands Modern Bot Ban | 90% Were Bots!

Several days ago the bot ban in modern format went live

The results are nothing less than spectacular! Have a look at this chart to see the dramatic change:

While the transactions have been rather constant, there has been a huge change in the numbers of battles in the corresponding format. Over the last days the number of battles in modern format has went down by 90%, while the wild format roughly doubled! (Note: I am taking the middle of the chart as a base line). The easiest explanation for this development is that bot farms have migrated from modern to wild. But what is truly shocking is just how much bot farms have been operating or still are in wild. Only around 10% of the battles were played by humans while the rest were bots.

This means that of the 500k battles a day on splinterlands only perhaps 50k were of human origin. While this is a drastic reduction, the number is still fairly high for a web3 game. Clearly all blockchain games are facing the bot problem, so if we actually have around 50k real players, this is still a very good metric.

Rewards are through the roof

If you have been playing yourself or watched/read some of the reports of others you will have noticed that the rewards for playing in modern have gone up by around 2-4 times (at least). One of the most rewarding leagues are the bronze and silver ones. I am almost tempted in going there as well since my win ration in gold is only around 50-60%. This will of course get more balances once we get more players coming to this format or the specific leagues. But this essentially means that we have a very good incentive for (new) players coming to Splinterlands.

New players or more Bots?

When looking at the accounts playing we see a very big increase as well. From around 50k accounts playing, it increased to almost 150k. There was some heavy fluctuation, so we will have to wait and see how this turns out. I am not sure exactly what this means since we do not see an increase in the number of battles played. Does that mean most of the accounts that came online are bots? Will it even be profitable to have bot farms in wild when the reward pool will get so thin?

There have been some more purchases of spellbooks indicating some new players, but the account metric has seen the greater change.

Conclusion

It seems that the bot ban in modern has been a great success. The natural question this begs of course is if these changes should also be introduced into wild? I think so, as this can only benefit the game as a whole since bots generally only pull value out of a game.

Thanks for the charts and stats on Splinterlands. I tried playing last year but couldn't get very far on a small account. With this shift I am again interested as I may have a better chance of success now that bots are gone from Modern. They should do the same for Wild.

The rewards in Gold Modern have been fantastic so far. I can also win many more chests and battles too!
