Splinterlands: Only announce changes afterwards - How does that work?

Well, sometimes Splinterlands can be very fast, but read the news for yourself that today's update is completed:

So translated: We have just done maintenance and from now on all starter cards are no longer allowed in tournaments and brawls - we don't care whether you are currently in a brawl or in a tournament and expected to be able to use them !

How can that work?

I think the decision is fundamentally not objectionable, but during an ongoing brawl cycle, which is currently in the middle of the battle phase, changing that, i.e. whoever set their battle before the maintenance could use the starter cards, whoever She only wanted to put it afterwards and is now just smeared - how can something like that work?

Is it just me or would others have also expected advance notice with a corresponding lead time?

@yabapmatt once promised that changes would always be announced 14 days in advance unless it was something that urgently needed to be fixed (security problem). I can't see what was so urgent here that they couldn't announce it but had to implement it straight away.
