Being "Odd" is not a Disadvantage - A Splinterlands' Battle Mage Secret Challenge Entry

"Don't fear your uniqueness. Fear being the same", "Dare to be different, the world is counting on it", "Your individuality is a gift to the world. Unwrap it and share it with all." are some of the popular quotes that justifies the need to be "odd" in some phases of life. There is always the pressure of FOMOing to be like every other person but anyone can be anything in this world, if he or she dares to be different. Being odd or different can suggest how we'd handle life's battles and challenges.

Odd ones out battle rulset was quite odd to draw. Tens of battles were fought and other rulesets repeated many times but not the "odd" ruleset as the name implies. Funilly, this ruleset does not demand too much other than ** only units with odd mana costs may be used.**. Howeever, summoners are not affected by this rule. That means that a summoner with an even manna costs can be used, but all monsters must have to be odd numbered.

My Battle Experience with "Odd Ones Out" Ruleset

As I drew this battle with the "Odd ones out" rulese, I decided to go odd in my approach, deferring from my usual. I choose the Bortus (3) Summoner from the water water splinter category. I couldn't remember using the summoner ever. The summoner reduces the magic attack stat of the enemy monsters. I know how strong magic monsters can be, and I know the value of having to deplete its attacking strength. I still had access to my favourite and trusted water monsters like Nerissa Tridawn (9) and Merdaali Guardian (3). I had to select three other monsters Flying Squid (7), Hardy Stonefish (1) and Albatross (1) to join the battle.

Bortus Summoner

The battle field was quite odd too. My opponent also chose Nerissa Tridawn to lead the fight. The enemy team also had Merdaali Guardian in the lineup led by Kelya Frendul Summoner. The enemy monsters all had +1 armor and +1 speed. That was a formidable team, but thanks to my summoner that minimized the attacking strength of the opposing by reducing the magic attack by -1.

The 24 manna cap battle gave me space to place monsters in such a way that Merdaali Guardian was protected from early attack. It was placed at the middle of my lineup and I knew that was secure enough to prevent it from the strikes of enemy monsters with the Snipe and related ability that hunts for the last and most vulnerable monster in the lineup. Here's the Battle link

It was a fierce battle and at some point I felt I could be losing since I had just two effective attacking monsters - Nerissa Tridawn and Flying Squid. The battle lasted for 8 rounds. That's the longest battle I've ever played on Splinterlands. My Nerissa Tridawn was able to oust the enemy's counterpart at the 5th round. Below are screenshots at each round to give you a graphic view of the battle.

I won the battle with two monsters surviving, earned +25 rating points. All thanks to the duo of Nerissa Tridawn and Flying Squid that did so well in the attacks and surviving. However, Merdaali Guardian was the most valuable monster of the battle since it kept cleansing Nerissa Tridawn through the first Six rounds of the battle. I can say that using Bortus summoner for the fight was a god choice that reduced the attacking strength of the enemy team greatly.

I would utilize the strategy as many times if I drew the ruleset again with that manna cap. In a case of smaller manna cap, Nerissa Tridawn and Merdaali Guardian would remain my favourite picks. The combo of the duo is amazing for me.
