Even Stevens Ruleset: Size & Rank isn't Strength - A Splinterlands Battle Mage Secrets Challenge Entry

When you first hear the words Even Stevens, you will think that everything about the battle would be even. That was just my thought at first. Your knowledge of the word "even" in mathematics would make you think everything would be even and smooth, but not so with this SPlinterlands battle ruleset!

The Even Stevens ruleset in Splinterlands battle provides that only units with even mana costs may be used. This means that you can only select monster units with manna costs of 2, 4, 6, 8, 10, 12, etc. However, this rule does not apply to summoners.

On drawing this battle with the Even Stevens ruleset, I remembered Arkemis the Bear, a SPlinterlands promo-card with 12 manna cost. It looked like it's gonna be a good fit for the battle with its Protect ability which gives +2 armor to all friendly monsters. That made everything more even to my ears. I let Arkemis the Bear (12) lead the battle with Dispel (4), Antoid Platoon (4), and Goblin Fireballer (2) doing the support. All monsters were summoned by Tarsa.

Tarsa adds +1 health and +1 melee attack to all friendly monsters. That seemed like a brilliant move for the battle with Arkemis the Bear starting with +4 melee attack, 11 health and 2 armor. Let's see how the Battle went.

At the end of the first round, everything still looked even on the battlefield. Though some of my monsters lost their armor, the health counts were still good. Both sides had dealt some good blows to each other. The main attackers on my side were Arkemis the Bear, Dispel, and Goblin Fireballer.

By the end of the second round, things were no more even on board. My lead monster unit had lost 90% of its health. The last monster had just one health count left, yet, Goblin Psychic (6) in the enemy team with its Tank heal ability kept their lead monster formidable and strong. Indeed, things were no more even!

At the end of the third round, I had lost three monsters. The last one was just looking strong with the shield ability. But how much can he do alone?

My team was devoured. We lost, yet, the enemy team was still complete. I'm wondering if it was overconfidence or a wrong arrangement. Just then, I remembered that Arkemis the NBear, despite his good attacking stats is never good at leading the fight, because the moment he dies, all friendly monsters lose their additional armor.

Thinking about the loss, I remembered this battle quote credited to Heraclitus. He said, "Out of every one hundred men, ten shouldn’t even be there, eighty are just targets, nine are the real fighters, and we are lucky to have them, for they make the battle". This means that things may look "even" on the outside but in reality are not the way they seem. Not all the units in my team were actually ready or well prepared for the battle.

General Bruce Clarke, a United States Army general and career officer who served in World War I, World War II, and the Korean War also said “Rank is given you to enable you to better serve those above and below you It is not given for you to practice your idiosyncrasies.” Arkemis the Bear looked so loaded and I missed by placing him to lead the battle. he would have performed better from the third position while Antoid Platoon (4) could have done better at the lead.

Now learn this, Size & Rank isn't Strength! Things were just overrated for me and I lost the calculations. Next time you draw Even Stevens ruleset, know that you may be even in number but not in strength.

Tip:

  • Antoid Platoon os a a bottle battle leader.
  • Arkemis the Bear is better from the rear. Place him not the last and he'll help give your team a good defense.
