Offensive Attack is Best Strategy for "Counterspell" Ruleset - A Splinterlands Battle Mage Secrets Challenge Entry

The quest for knowledge is a two-edged sword. It can make or mar a man. That is, what we know can make one better and what we know can destroy one as well. Just "knowing" is not enough until the right application is given. Sometimes, it takes daring to uncover the truth about why some things should or not be done.

Life is a warfare and we fight battles every day. Some battles are physical while some are fought in the invisible realms of the mind, within. In all, knowing the right strategy and leadership guarantees victory. This is why I find matching warfare and battle quotes each time I share my experience with Splinterlands battles. The game means more to me than just fun.

Winning a battle with the COunterspell ruleset was not all the knowledge I needed to understand d that ruleset better. this brought the thought of "what if" to mind as I drew another battle with that ruleset. I needed to understand how the "magic reflect" ability imposed on all monsters works. We never would know until we use magic to attack monsters for such a battle.

The Counterspell battle ruleset provides that all units receive the magic reflect ability at the start of the battle. Enemy units that attack with magic receive damage back. Within the ruleset, the damage returned equals the damage of the attacker divided by 2, rounded up. Also, Magic attack units with the reflection shield ability do not take damage from reflected magic attacks. Players must be wary of monsters with the "amplify" ability because they will take increased damage.

On drawing this battle with the counterspell ruleset, I deliberately added two magic attack monsters. I fielded 4 melee attack monsters. Thanks to the battle manna cap of 33 that allowed for 6 monster units. We know how dangerous magic attack monsters can be, especially as they target the health of the monster ahead of the armor. Such a subtle weapon.

Even with the knowledge that the magic reflects ability on every monster would risk my two magic monsters taking more damage than should be. This intentional act was out of a quest to know how the battle would turn out to be and what would make my performance different from the previous. Kelya Frendul summoned the battle. Monster units were Serpent of Eld (7), Nerissa Tridawn (9), Merdaali Guardian (3), Deeplurker (6)and River Nymph (4). That is one of my best squad for battle.

A keen observation of my team shows a defensive team, starting from the summoner. Giving +1 armor to the monster units is to build their defense. +1 speed could be termed an offensive effect, but it does not determine the extent of damage on the enemy monster. On the other hand, the enemy team was quite offensive in their strategy. using a summoner that adds Inspire, Reach, & Trample abilities to monsters shows a highly offensive team.

All monsters in the enemy team were melee monsters and could attack twice if they successfully killed a monster. The inspire ability of the summoner added +1 melee attack to all the monster units and that made their attack more impact on my team.

Below are screenshots of the battle.

It was a woeful loss for my team. The enemy team won with 4 monsters still alive. They were all aggressive in the fight while my team tried to be defensive. The magic attack that could have given us an advantage was countered by the battle's ruleset. Hence, we can say that the best strategy for the Counterspell ruleset is being offensive.

A player should get as much melee attack monsters as well as look out for abilities that enhance attack.Such could be using monsters that add melee and or abilities that increase damage or allow for multiple attacks from one monster.

It was a loss, ut the lessons were well learnt.

What has been your best strategy battling with Counterspell ruleset?
