Splinterlands is a play to earn battle game with DeFi, and other web 3 realities. While cypto earning is the loud feature of play to earn games, engaging in Splinterlands battles fare differently. There are many skills to engage and there are many lessons to learn. key is strategy that every battle requires and it can be applied in very many phases of life.

For a typical battle, a player is given the opportunity to select his favourite card NFT characters with desired stats and abilities but within a defined manna cap. In some other cases, the battle opens up with some defined rulesets aimed at making the battle more difficult and engaging. Some of the rulesets improve/ignore card stats, abilities. Other rulesets limits the card type that can be used in the battle. The tweaks makes the game more sophisticated and that hones some special skills in the players.

Some players have attribute winning battles in Splinterlands to luck and some the quality of cards and while others stay with the reality that a good strategy is what a player needs to win. Whatever the case may be, the underlying fact is that there is more to winning splinterlands battles and this makes your earnings more enjoyable. I participated in the Battle Mage secret battle challenge which specified the Even Stevens ruleset. Here's how the battle went and my key takeaways.

Even Stevens Ruleset

This Splinterlands battle ruleset requires that only units with even mana costs may be used. This means that only monster card NFTs with 2, 4, 6, 8,.. manna cap can be used in the battle. Summoner cards are excluded in this ruleset. This ruleset is very dicey because it's hard to have at heart whether your favourite cards are even or odd numbered in terms of manna cap. I drew the ruleset and engaged the battle.

The battle had a manna cap of 26 and only cards with even manna caps were up for use. You have less than Three minutes to decide the combinations of the cards, and you do not even have the time to change buy or rent cards for the battle.

I fielded Four monster Fire cards for the battle against the enemy's Five dragon cards. My fire and neutral cards used were as follows:

  • Arkemis the Bear
  • Venari Spellsmith
  • Antoid Platoon
  • Goblin Fireballer

Choosing Arkemis the Bear for the battle was due to its huge stats and the Protect ability. With the Fire monster, Tarsa, that adds extra one health and melee attack to all monsters, I was sure that Arkemis would have a powerful 4 melee attack stat with a good health over 10 to start the battle. With it's additional two armor stats added to all monsters courtesy of Arkemis the bear, there was some hope for a good performance.

The cards used for the battle were of good stats and abilities, but there is more to the Splinterlands than just good cards. I would not say luck is the next big thing, rather, I see strategy adopted as what can keep one in the game or not. The strategy here involves the arrangement of the goof cards you have for their optimum performances.

Though limited by the cards to choose, my team clearly lacked a melee monster that could attack from the rear. Venari Spellsmith as a magic monster would attack from the rear, yet, its 1 magic attack was a big limitation to dislodge the enemy. Arkemis the Bear got all the jabs quite early in the battle up to the third round. It was my most powerful player and mst endowed. However, after losing it in the match, other monsters would get crushed in no time.

Even Stevens Ruleset Exposes an Unbalanced Deck

The ruleset drawn has a way of showing that your deck neeeds more cards with a wide variety of abilities and stats.

Below are screenshots of the battle arena through the 5 rounds of the battle for ease of understanding of the battle outcomes.

1. Round 1

1. Round 2

1. Round 3

1. Round 4

Round 5

My team lost the battle at the fifth round and it showed how unfit my strategy was thouth with good cards on the deck. Even Stevens Ruleset made it a little harder as it muted some smart monsters that could have launched a rear attack on the enemy. All odd numbered monsters could not be used.

I think n winning splinterlands battles, strategy is a crucial factor and I rae it above card ratings and what you may call luck. Here is the battle link for your observation too.

Even Stevens Ruleset wuld show how unbalanced your deck can be.
