Target & Protect the Weak in "Equal Opportunity" Ruleset - A Splinterlands Battle Mage Secrets Challenge Entry

The Splinterlands battle game is not just a game, there is weave of life's experiences and how to handle them strategically. This week's battle theme portrays a typical life setting with various applications.

In a civil society, we're admonished to protect the vulnerable class. These set of persons may not be necessarily weak, but when exposed unduly can become a weaklink to a supposedly strong team.

In a war setting, Sun Tzu, a strategist advised: “Avoid what is strong, Attack what is weak.”. Sun Tzu recommended tha avoiding the enemy's stronghold and attacking his weak points is a sure strategy for victory. This is what the Equal Opportunity represent in the Splinterlands battle game.

Equal Opportunity provides that all units gain the opportunity ability which allows them to attack the unit with the lowest health on the enemy team. I've been in love with one monster that has this ability - Deeplurker.

As I drew this battle with the "equal opportunity" ruleset, I didn't have need for Deeplurker perhaps due to the manna cap of 24.

I fielded Nerissa Tridawn (9), Serpent of Eld (7), Merdaali Guardian (3), and Hardy Stonefish (1) for the battle as ably summoned by Kelya Frendul. Kelya Frendul summoner adds +1 armor and +1 speed to all friendly monsters. That is a lot of provision to defend and protect vulnerable monster units.

The enemy team came morr prepared. They were more offensive as led by Tarsa summoner which added +1 melee attack and +1 health all their monster units. However winning the battle with "equal opportunity" requires more than a good offense. Let's see how the battle went.

By the end of the first round, my team brought down two of the enemy team's monster units. Thanks to the improved speed on Serpent of Eld and magic attack of Nerissa Tridawn that nade them offensive and assuredly destroyed the two monsters with a single attack each.

Winning this battle was not all easy. It was fierce such that it lasted for 6 rounds.

My Winning Strategy

  • Using a multifaceted summoner that enhanced attack (speed) and defense (armor). Adding armor to the team especially for a battle that allows melee monsters is a plus since +1 armor may absorb +4 melee attack. With Kelya Frendul, I was able to target the weak monsters in the enemy team by attacking first while also protecting my weak monster units.
  • Using a magic attack monster with good attack count. This is where Nerissa Tridawn served better. It ignores the armor of the enemy monsters and aims for their health with its +3 attack.
  • Always position to attack first. Using monster units with high speed helps out here. It is important to note that some weak-looking monster units may have terrible attacking strength. Attacking them first would spare you from receiving their hard punch before they die.

In summary, when we all have equal opportunity, one must be mindful of skills that would give him advantage in the fore and rear. Going all for tbr attack may leave the team so vulnerable. Hence, there is need to balance attack and defense in such circumstances.
