The Positioning of a Trample Monster is Key in "Stampede" Combat - A Splinterlands' Battle Mage Secret Challenge Entry

The importance of fear as a factor in war-making cannot be overlooked, and can hardly be overestimated. The fear factor scares the people and they may end up killing them selves when trying to escape rather than attack the enemy. This fear factor is what defines the Trample ability in Splinterlands battle which is the central focus of the Stampede Ruleset. Bangambiki Habyarimana in Pearls of Eternity is credited with the words "...Either you have power or you are trampled to death in the stampede to get to the top". Power here may not necessarily be a physical strength but the right strategy and wisdom to be able to face your strong and ability-studded enemy. The wisdom and strategy has a lot to do with positioning.

The description of the Stampede Ruleset is that trample ability will retrigger infinitely as long as the trampling unit keeps killing other units. When a Monster with Trample hits and kills its target with a Melee attack, it will perform another Melee attack on the next Monster on the enemy Team. The Trample ability is triggered based on the sequential order of the opponent's monster positions. Possibilus the Wise Summoner is the prime use case for the Stampede ruleset. This is a powerful Legendary summoner that provides friendly monsters with +2 health, trample ability and reach ability. Using this summoner equips every friendly monster with the trample ability and that is a good advantage when drawing the Stampede ruleset.

Possibilus the Wise

My Battle Experience with Stampede Ruleset

I was so unfortunate, or let's say, fortunate to have draw this stampede battle but without the Possibilus the Wise summoner. The 38 manna cap allowed me to select Six monster units: Diemonshark, Nerissa Tridawn, Ice Pixie, Merdaali Guardian, Deeplurker and Sniping Narwhal for the battle. My team had to face an opponent with Unicorn Mustang, Regal Peryton, Khmer princess, Goblin Psychic and Kron the Undying as battling monsters. Having Diemonshark (8)
with 4 speed, 2 melee attack, 6 armor and 7 health felt like an advantage until I discovered that the enemy monsters all had the cleanse and last chance abilities plus +2 health provided by the summoner.

Diemonshark's attack was weak (just 2) coupled with many magic attack monsters in the enemy team, the health of my lead monster was attack and we lost it in the first round of the fight. Both teams had no Trample ability at this point and the outcome of the battle will solely depend on the ability to strike hard and the health to endure attack. Nerissa Tridawn took the lead and stayed strong until the fourth round of the battle.

Battle Evaluation

The fight could only last for 5 rounds until all my monster units were destroyed. We lost. My strategy was bad. Positioning my only monster with Trample ability to lead the fight was an error. This is because, fist line monster units in battle field cannot attack second line monster units . At the stat f the battle, all monsters are laden with good health counts, hence, the possibility of killing a monster to trigger the trample ability effect was quite small.

The best position for the monster with trample ability should be in the second or third. Definitely not the first nor the last so as not to be targeted early enough in the battle. My positioning of Diemonshark (8) despite is huge stats was bad. It was destroyed so early in the battle at a time when its use would have been more needed. Definitely, the Positioning of a Trample Monster is Key in "Stampede" Combat ! I learnd the hard way but can have it better in my next if the ruleset is drawn.
