Splinterlands Art Contest Week 282 - Contessa L'ament

Hello Everyone! Welcome to my Art blog!

I will be participating in this week's Splinterlands Art Contest and the card I've chosen to make a fanart was the dark witch - CONTESSA L'AMENT.

I just found out that the contest was back to the normal non-theme contest and this one is something I started drawing last week and just finished this time. Fortunately, I've chosen this card because of how she showcases her magic, I planned to change that light above into a crystal. And so I can still use this as my entry for the regular art contest. Hopefully!

I started with a sketch which I originally wanted to be just a simple sketch just to get the basic forms and shapes on but things got rougher when I was drawing the hands. And after a couple of minutes, finally drew something that would at least make sense for a hand. I then created a simple lineart with my original intention for it to be simpler and added the base colors.

I drew the crystal on a separate layer, I first drew it bigger since it was my first time drawing crystal I had to study it for a bit and when I got satisfied I adjusted it and placed it above her hand and made it my main source of light and the focal point. In the midst of this process, I studied a crash course in Light Theory by Stephanie Bohm and I applied the things I've learned right into this work. The process is somewhat different from what I usually do but I still mix some of my preferred way of painting. So the first thing was to fill the whole character with ambient shadow and erase some parts that were possibly hit by the main source of light, I did this in a multiply layer also using a round brush I painted the shadow on the left of her face.

I painted more lights, I added a secondary light which can only be seen in the shadow because of how minimal the light is, and the Rimlight which can be best used when the contrast of the background and the subject is near, which is also the case for this work. I then painted the occlusion shadows or the darkest part of the shadow which I painted with the help of the lasso tool. And then added the textures, especially on the mask but I only painted faint textures on it this time because it felt like it was drawing my attention to the mask instead of my intended focal point. And after adding a few highlights here is the RESULT...
