Helios Matriarch - Splinterlands Art Contest Week 240

Greetings dear Hivers and all Splinterlands fans who follow my content.
I hope you are enjoying a great weekend. In my case, I'm a bit exhausted because I once again stayed up all night in order to finish my entry in this week's Splinterlands contest. However, I'm not complaining because I was doing what I'm passionate about, I'll have time to rest later. 😅😅😅
I tell you that for weeks now, I have had a card in mind that I wanted to do something special with. Since I saw this card and its great design, I loved it. To my surprise, last season I won said card, so I couldn't be happier. I'm talking about -=𝕳𝖊𝖑𝖎𝖔𝖘 𝕸𝖆𝖙𝖗𝖎𝖆𝖗𝖈𝖍=-, a summoner belonging to Splinter Dragon.
While what I made today isn't exactly what I had in mind, I had to work with the time available. With only 12 hours to create something, I couldn't afford to experiment. If I wanted to participate this week, I needed something by now. So I looked for an option that could allow me to do it, but I'll describe it below in the images I saved to share with you. 💕⬇️
𝕳𝖊𝖗𝖊 𝕴 𝖘𝖍𝖆𝖗𝖊 𝖜𝖎𝖙𝖍 𝖞𝖔𝖚 𝖆 𝕷𝖔𝖗𝖊 𝕾𝖓𝖎𝖕𝖕𝖊𝖙 𝖔𝖋 𝕳𝖊𝖑𝖎𝖔𝖘 𝕸𝖆𝖙𝖗𝖎𝖆𝖗𝖈𝖍, 𝖘𝖔 𝖞𝖔𝖚 𝖈𝖆𝖓 𝖑𝖊𝖆𝖗𝖓 𝖒𝖔𝖗𝖊 𝖆𝖇𝖔𝖚𝖙 𝖙𝖍𝖊 𝖍𝖎𝖘𝖙𝖔𝖗𝖞 𝖔𝖋 𝖙𝖍𝖎𝖘 𝖈𝖍𝖆𝖗𝖆𝖈𝖙𝖊𝖗.
At five-hundred and ninety-three years old, Rosa Phireth was the youngest matriarch selected by the other cardinals to head the Church of Helios. Now, almost a century later, she has greatly increased the church’s influence within the Gloridax Empire and developed a close friendship and bond with the Dragonach Shogun, head of the empire’s mighty Dragonsguard.
Rosa carries Ataraxia, the Dragon Warden Staff. According to scripture, Ataraxia was gifted to the church’s first Matriarch by Helios, the Sun God of Dragons, himself. The staff has the power to bend time to the will of its wielder.

While I was waiting for the electricity to arrive, I was looking through my sketchbook to see if I could find a pose that would work for what I needed. Yes, I found several, but in the end I thought that the most suitable for the mighty Helios Matriarch was this one that made her look imposing, a powerful lady. So that was the one chosen for this design. Then, as soon as I could sit down at my PC, I could start adapting it to this character and that's how it was in the end.

After all that, I started using the technique that always gets me out of trouble. As I mentioned in one of my previous posts, I use grayscale values when I'm against the clock, that is, when I don't have much time I use this technique. I recommend it. 😅👌🏻
The truth is that at this point that's what I did, give volume as well as depth to my sketch to, when everything was in place, start with the magic of color. 🪄✨✨

And well, I mentioned it above. Once everything was ready, the color magically arrived. And yes, here you can't see how, but if you watch my video, you can see when exactly this moment came. And this was basically what I did at this point and with the help of Helios Matriarch I looked for the different shades of his color palette in order to pass that palette to my sketch.

You can't see much change with reference to the previous point, but even though you can't see much, I did work on different things. I rendered even more the skin of Helios Matriarch and, in addition, I detailed even more the details in the clothes and armor, and at this point I started to give some life to the background.

Having a background a little more worked compared to the previous steps, but all this was as a base, as I kept on working to find a scene worthy of this Dragon Summoner. Besides that, there were many things I did, such as detailing better the scepter she carries in her hand, also the details of the clothes, and I did the tattoos on the body.

Coming to the end, I detailed better the armor he wears, besides what he wears on his head, which is like a kind of crown. I also rendered more the scepter, and I was working on the skin and the things he has on it.

At the end, I finished the background and made some little friends flying overhead. Do you see them? 👀👀👀 All this to complement the scene and what she represents as such. I also finished working on the whole body and the power she carries and the lights and shadows that were missing, and after some magic touches, my piece was completely finished and ready to be shown before this community... I hope you liked what I did with this awesome card as inspiration.

I like to know more about this grey scale technique Yanes. After shading in grayscale how do you apply colours on it though?

I don't usually do grayscale much but it's easier in a certain way, that is to say that you don't worry about the colors but about the values, the depth and so on. To get to the color you can do it in several ways, it depends on how much you know ps, some filters, the curves, gradient map, overlay layer and others ... u use Ibis pain (I think I read that) on a layer above with an overlay it works, in fact that's how I did it with this one, just select the color, not so light, not so dark, a medium one would already have the base, one layer above that you can adjust and so on, apply details, correct, highlights and things like that, it's a way to quickly go to color
I know about the overlay method. That's the only one I know so far but I didn't try it on a full painting yet because in overlay mode the colour just mixes with the colour on the layer below so the output doesn't feel so vibrant to me. Maybe with all the mentioned things you said above, one can produce a good result. I don't use photoshop haha. I don't like it's UI 😂.
