MY Journey so far, its been a ride

When I first joined Hive, I honestly thought it would be like every other social platform I had used before. Sign up, post, get likes, follow people, grow and a little twist earn free crypto. That assumption was my first mistake. Hive is not built like the usual social media spaces where visibility is automatic and engagement is casual. Hive is a community-driven ecosystem with its own drivers to engagement I dare say, it feels the same but is also different.

My first few moments or days on Hive/ecency were confusing. I posted content in random communities without understanding what those communities were actually about. I did not pay attention to prompts or the kind of posts people there were used to seeing. I simply thought content was content. The result was minimal engagement, I didn’t even pay attention to the number of words per post. My first few posts were like less than 100 words, I didn’t even do an introductory post when i posted and got no engagements or curation I got mad and as such I left ecency for some time, a few months and then I came back again Each community has a purpose, a tone, and often a specific type of content it encourages.

When you post without understanding that, your content feels out of place, even if it is well written. People are less likely to engage because it doesn’t fit what they came to the community to read. I had to learn this the hard way by trial and error, i literally had no guide back then. I also made the mistake of posting and disappearing. I didn’t engage with others. I wasn’t commenting thoughtfully on posts or building any form of presence. Hive rewards interaction. It is not just about what you post, but how you show up for other people’s posts. When I started reading more, commenting genuinely, other people started visiting my page and Engagement improved, even though It might not look like im that big. Ive learned a few things and im still learning Another thing I learned quickly is the importance of having a recognizable profile picture, have something recognisable and stick to it.

One major mistake new users make is writing comments that look like bot replies. Short, generic comments like “Nice post,” “Great write-up,” or “Well done” don’t help you build connections. They don’t add value to the conversation and they don’t make the author feel seen. Understanding prompts is also very important. Many communities on Hive work with daily or weekly prompts. At first, I ignored them or misunderstood them. Once I started reading them carefully and writing posts that actually responded to those prompts, engagement improved. One rule you must never break on Hive is plagiarism. Hive takes originality very seriously. Copying content from elsewhere, even slightly, can get you blacklisted very quickly. Dont also forget other platforms on Hive like the games that you can play like Splinterlands and Terracore

For anyone new to Hive, my biggest advice is to take your time to observe before rushing to post everywhere. Find one or two communities that genuinely suit your interests and style of writing. Spend time reading what others post there. Engage meaningfully and watch out for the discord forums, a lot goes on their, its like a little vacation space for ecency/hive users, and consistency is definitely the key here.
