Spotlight on Archmage Yabanius: The Shadow Archmage of Splinterlands!

avatar

Good morning Splinterlands fam! 👋This is @zusi78, today I’m diving deep into one of my favorite Legendaries — Archmage Yabanius, a dual Water/Dragon powerhouse that’s quickly become a staple in my lineups. If you haven’t pulled or faced this beast yet, you’re in for a treat. Let’s break it all down!

This is my second Legendary pick featuring the Camouflage ability. The first was Kervik, and now I’ve added Archmage Yabanius to the roster! Their Camouflage is first in their abilities display. This is for YABINIUS ARCHMAGE 👇

What makes units with Camouflage so unique and slippery is that opponents generally cannot directly target them unless they move into the first position in your lineup. The main exceptions are indirect attacks (like Blast, Scattershot, or Trample) and specific abilities such as Reveal or Expose.

This makes them fantastic backline threats that are incredibly hard to deal with early in battle — unless your opponent brings the right counters!

Splinterlands is no walk in the park, but that's what amps up the excitement.A winning strategy weighs stats, abilities, rulesets, mana caps, and beyond. That's why you must factor them all into your deck building.Toss in strong cards to boost your setups, and push hard to rack up as many victories as possible! 🔥

FEATURED CARD.
Short Lore Summary: Archmage Yabanius, popular called"the Architect," was a member of the Wizards’ Council dedicated to protecting the Splinterlands. Betrayed by Portia Nyr, who opened chaotic rifts, he survived exile and descended into the dangerous Deep. There, he endured years of isolation fighting horrors to seal a massive rift. Now driven by unbreakable resolve, he works from the shadows to confront the betrayal and restore order.

The Card Basics & Stats.
Archmage Yabanius is a dual (water/dragon) Legendary 6-mana Ranged attacker (Human) with strong scaling potential. At base level you arelooking at:
2 Ranged Attack
5 Speed
6 Health
As you level him up (Legendary needs 11 BCX to max), his stats climb significantly, unlocking higher damage, survivability, and more abilities. He is built for the long game — perfect for mid-to-late battle impact. At max level as shown above its ranged attack becomes 3, Speed 5 and Health 6.

Abilities That Make Him Sneaky & Strong.
What really sets him apart is his kit:Describing the ability icons from left to right on the card, here’s what each one represents:

Camouflage — He cannot be directed targeted unless in the first position. He operates from the shadows! This makes him incredibly hard to target early, especially with Sneak. I love dropping him last in my lineup — he rains down ranged damage while staying protected and hidden.

Empower — While not revealed, this unit and adjacent units gain +1 power.

Shatter — Successful attacks destroy the target's armor.

Stun — 50% chance to apply stunned for one round after a successful attack. Stunned units skips their turn and cannot retaliate.

Scattershot — If an attack's damage would be reduced by Void, Shield or the target unit has Forcefield,it deals true damage +1 instead.

Market Value. At level 1,this card is sold for $7.75 currently for a regular foil.
It’s expensive because it’s rare + powerful + meaningful to the community. Classic supply-and-demand in the Splinterlands economy.

The Promo Card Story & Tribute to Yabapmatt

This isn’t just any Legendary — Archmage Yabanius is a special 7-Year Anniversary Promo Card from the Conclave Arcana set (2025). Limited print run with Regular, Gold, and ultra-rare Black Foil versions. It was released to celebrate the game’s milestone and, most importantly, to honor one of Splinterlands’ co-founders: Yabapmatt (Matthew Rosen).

Hey @yabapmatt, if you’re reading this — massive respect, man! 🙌 Your work building this game we all love, from the tech to the community vision, is legendary. Thanks for helping create a world where we can all battle, strategize, and grow together. This card is a fantastic tribute!

Why I Chose Him:
In hundreds of battles, I have rarely seen him in opponents’ decks. That rarity in the wild makes him feel fresh and gives me a nice edge when I drop him. Most players are still chasing the meta staples, but Yabanius rewards creative positioning and Water/Dragon synergy.
I love running him at the back because:

  • Camouflage keeps him alive longer.
  • Ranged attacks let him contribute safely.
  • His abilities turn good teams into great ones.

He is the ultimate “behind-the-scenes operator.” Position him correctly and he strengthens your whole squad while chipping away at enemies who can’t easily reach him.
