3 mistakes to avoid when leveling up your cards

Recently I watched a video on youtube about the game. At a certain time in the video, the host that was interviewing Aggroed was showing his deck and I saw some beginners mistakes that gave me the idea for this video.

In order to develop and grow in Splinterlands you will need to upgrade your cards to make them more powerful. This upgrading has however to be meditated carefully because once it is done it can't be undone.

In the video I will show you which basic mistakes you should avoid while upgrading your cards.

Thanks, this is useful info.

Note that many newer players (like me) depend heavily on renting, in this case there is no problem with upgrading the monsters before the summoners. When you do rent a higher lvl summoner you can then use the upgraded monster as well, so at least one card less to rent. And when you don't rent the higher lvl summoner you can still rent out your higher lvl card. Similarly for the leagues, with my own collection power I would be stuck in bronze, but by renting I can reach silver or gold, get more daily chests and slowly build up my deck. Also sometimes it is even cheaper to rent higher lvl summoner/monster than you are able to play... So it is good to pay attention to the tips you presented with possible adjustments when one relies a lot on renting.

Also there seems to be some issues with the audio, your voice goes down for several seconds a few times (like 6.26, 7.07).

Thanks a lot for your great comment. You are totally right that the situation is different when you rely on renting cards. But still it's important to develop monsters only as much as necessary in respect to the summoner that you are going to rent. It can also be a good idea for example to develop several cards of the same type. For example with reward cards. You make two level 2 cards. You rent one out and you use the other one. Once you develop your deck, you can cancel the rent and merge all the cards together.

Also there seems to be some issues with the audio, your voice goes down for several seconds a few times (like 6.26, 7.07).

I'll need to check my settings. Thanks.

These are good points. I did not know that you can merge developed cards together, thanks :)

This is really helpful especially to those new in the game. I remember making the same mistakes early on. And big yes on leveling up thhe summoners first. My goodness this is my biggest regret. I hesitated to level up Alric Stormbringer when it was only around $13 now it is over $200 in the market. Insane!

At the moment it's very difficult to upgrade any type of summoners. They are pretty expensive. I'm looking forward to going on shopping spree once the CL cards will be on the market. I will aim mainly for summoners :-)

Thank you for this information which should be taken into consideration especially when considering renting cards

For renting cards, the same principle are true. It's important to check the summoner max regarding to the league you play in and then check which level of cards you will be able to play. If you do that filtering well, you can save quite a lot of rental fees.

would you recommend leveling up a weak summoner just so you could play higher level cards?

I did that in the past and realised that it wasn't a very good strategy. If the price difference isn't too big, I would now go for the better one.

Thanks for sharing this informaiton it is very interesting. I have noticed that summoners are not dropped in the daily loot chest or if they are, I have never recevied one. Since I do not have any summoners other than standard, I will need to purchase one. Does it matter which one I purchase?

There are no summoners in the reward cards, only monsters. If I may give you a piece of advice, I would wait until there are new summoners on the market from chaos league. In my opinion they will be much more available and cheaper to get.

While I was looking on the market, I saw KRETCH TALLEVOR summoner which is 3 Mana and level 1 allows level 2 common monsters to be used. There are three on the market for under $12. It would not need to be leveled up to be able to use level 2 monsters but I would need to save a little before I could afford it as well.

That is probably what I will do is wait and see if the new chaos summoners become available are are cheaper.

The problem with kretch tallevor is that it is out of print. This means that there are no new cards printed and the supply will go down over time. Each time somebody combines two cards, it's one card less. To upgrade it to level 2 is not a problem. But let's say you want to grow more at a later state, it will become more difficult to do it with this card than with the ones that are still in print.

I did not think about it being out of print. Good point. Thanks

The only cards one should partially upgrade are gladiators, because they can't be sold or rented out. Great tips for the newbies, Achim!

Here's another reason why one would want to keep versions of the same card. Let's take Furious Chicken, for example. I have one in GF, one normal upgraded to level 6 (rented out), and a few others, I think all at level 1. Here's the difference. Normally I play the GF, for the GF boost. But if the ruleset doesn't allow melee cards, level 1 chicken can be played, because it has no attack. If one upgrades a card using all available cards, then these opportunities might be missed, when a lower level card can be played where a higher level version of the card cannot.

Very good point man. The furious chicken is a very good example. I have 20 of them at level 1 and I could rent them all out for several DEC per day!

Great stuff man!

Huge lessons for people new to the game and OH BOY, I could have used this advice when I first started pressing 'combine cards' LOL

I learned about this the hard way as well lol. Fortunately at the time cards were not that expensive and it wasn't much trouble to compensate the mistakes :-)

i'm leveling up all these rewards cards right now...Mostly because I dont wanna get stuck in the same price trap as older rewards are at now. lol

much more investing approach, rather than playing approach...which hurts me at times....got leveled up kick butt cards...and no league to play them in lol

The great thing is that you can always try to rent them out if you can't play them. I would suggest to have a second card developped at playing level. Like that you have the max leveled out card that you can use once you reach the necessary league. With the cards and the motivation you have, I have no doubt that you will end up in diamonds sooner or later ;-)
