Brawl Report 5 - The Importance of Positioning

Splinterlands

This brawl marked the fifth brawl I have with The Guild of Kingshaven. Much can be learned from this brawl as I did some bad positioning in my setup.

The restrictions on my brawl are Novice level battle using only Chaos Legion units. Each battle are also given some random rulesets and mana so we have to quickly decide on what units to use and where to place them on the fly. Details of these rulesets descriptions can be found here.

Here are how I fought the 6 battles and the results:

Battle 1 - Ruleset Close Range + Equalizer (44 Mana): WIN

The first battle was a Close Range and Equalizer ruleset making me going for General Sloan as the summoner straight away. I have speedy Ajax Lightfoot in the last position to tank sneakers and Legionnaire Alvar in the first position to tank forward attackers. The opposing team uses a death team with heavy range attackers at the back and a thorn tank in front. Unfortunately for the opposing team, he/she was well outgunned by my range because General Sloan gave an additional 1 range damage whereas Thad doesn't.

End up it was a easy victory here with no unit lose at all. Pretty happy with my setup.

Battle 2 - Ruleset Back to Basic + Equalizer (48 Mana): LOSE

After watching the first battle, you would have thought this is going to be another easy one for me. Yeah I thought so too but I was so wrong. For some unknown reasons instead of going for the same exact setup as the first battle, I start to overthink thing. I started to consider using Quix because I think the opponent would definitely used General Sloan. Quix would remove off Sloan +1 range damage and further reduce the speed of the opposing team. Then I started to take too much time considering this and didn't notice time was ticking away. By the time I realised I don't have much time left I hastily assembled a Quix team.

Turned out it was very badly assembled. Not only did the opposing team didn't use Sloan but I place my Fiend in the wrong position! This is a back to basic ruleset, the Fiend should be placed in front at 2nd position! What a bad setup this was. Well deserved LOSS!

Battle 3 - Ruleset Weak Magic + Noxious Fumes (17 Mana): WIN
Battle 3.jpg

Usually I would chose Fire splinter if there is noxious fumes ruleset but there isn't a Fire splinter option so I go with the 2nd best, Water splinter. As there is also a Weak magic ruleset, shield is important so I chose DiemonShark as a tank. I added River Nymph to do a cleanse to remove the poison on DiemonShark. The opponent uses a Earth lineup with a high healthpoint Gladiator unit to tank. Unfortunately Earth Chaos Legion deck don't have a cleanse unit so I ended up with a close WIN here.

Battle 4 - Ruleset Lost Magic (42 Mana): WIN
Battle 4.jpg
Only Death and Life to chose here and since it is a Lost Magic ruleset, I went with Sloan and go for a Ranged setup. Fairly easy win but I like that opposing team gladiator unit. 4 ranged attack is crazy.

Battle 5 - Ruleset Equal Opportunity + Noxious Fumes (52 Mana): LOSE

Battle 5.jpg
Like I said earlier, if there is noxious fumes ruleset I would chose Fire splinter. So here I am going with Fire and with Forgotten One's immunity, I hope he would be the last one standing. Unfortunately the opposing team also has the same idea and setup a Fire team with Forgotten One as well. And here is where my positioning screwed up again.

My biggest problem with the setup is putting Grum Flameblade as the tank. As the ruleset is Equal Opportunity, I should have put Grum Flamblade at the back and uses him to hit the opposing team lowest health unit. With bloodlust, Grum and the gladiator Wallstop would have gain much power together. Would have been better if I have replaced Djinn Inferni with a tank.

Battle 6 - Ruleset Unprotected + Healed Out (19 Mana): WIN
Battle 6.jpg
This was a close fight. I went with Death unit with a thorn tank and a gladiator Ranged unit. Added also a Sapper and hope it will gain more hp along the way to buffer my gladiator Ranged. At the back I added Crypt beetle. Why? Cause the social media challenge asked for a Crypt beetle battle and I have no idea how to use this unit at all so added it in and see if it will block a sneaker.

Ended up the opposing team put up a Fire team with Tusk as tank. Tusk effectively turn my Sapper useless. Another useless unit is the Crypt beetle as there was no opposing sneaker so now he is just sitting at the back flying kite. Thankfully, I came away with a win cause my thorn tank managed to dodge a few times. Once the opposing team ranged is sniped off, its weakness in speed starts to show.

Well this time round I managed to get 4 Wins out of 6. Better still my guild managed to get 3rd overall as well so it was a good outing. Going to go buy a Gladius Case with the merits won and see what I get!

Oh and before I forget, the MVP unit for this round is....
WHISTLING DAMON

Until next time!
