My Splinterlands Journey....The Switch-A-Roo!
It's amazing how things work out...
I want to share a story with you today about my journey on the game we all know and love....
So I got into this game, right at the beginning but didn't dive fully into it. I was never a card player and these kind of games never really attracted me but the fact it was on the blockchain...It caught my attention.
...For about a month....
I remember being at Steemfest 3 in Krakow and everyone seemed to have their laptops out playing this game and I was sitting there scratching my head..I don't get it, it's a silly card game?
Time went on and then in late 2020, something caught my attention again. However what attracted me to the game back then was...The collectibility of the assets. And I timed it perfectly...
This was my gold foil legendary collection in 2021. I was hooked on the limited supply of these NFTs (which was a new term for me then lol) and was grabbing them at around 100-150 bucks each. This was about 6 months before the #Splinterlands explosion, so I looked like the smartest guy on the planet last year...
The SPS air drop came and wow...I thought for sure I was going to be able to make a living off this game.
Rental income, SPS and Voucher coming into my wallet every day...Life was good lol
I even started collecting the physical merchandise the game had, as my 'collector antennae' where at max levels...
Hooked, doesn't even begin to describe it!
Welp, as you guys know...Things happen...
The markets go poo-poo, Axie Infinity goes bye bye, and the 'play 2 earn' promise isn't what people hoped it would be.
I admit it, I was deflated.
Heck, I even started questioning myself if it was time to tap out, sell it all and call it a day. But then the @Splinterlands team launched the new focus reward system!
At first, I hated it!
I could never understand how this would possibly attract casual gamers and to be honest, I don't think it ever will. But then you start playing the game and working on your focus rewards....
That DAMN green bar!!!!!!
The Splinterlands team turned a 'ho-hum' daily quest into a carrot stick that never seems to be finished! Every time you want to quit, the green bar is a win or two away from the next reward chest...
I have played more Splinterlands games in the past few seasons then I think I have the entire first few years of the game's existence. It's addicting. On another level of addicting because that's just the daily focus....
Yeah, 1 day left and I'm at 50 chests for the season rewards! By no means is this the highest amount I could reach, but I know each season so far, my totals have increased because of how much I'm playing....
The Switch-A-Roo
When I started, I was a collector.
I didn't care about the game play, and screwed up a LOT of my combining of cards simply because...I had no idea what I was doing.
But here is the kicker.....
Now I'm much less worried about being a collector and much more focused on which cards I need to...Play the game effectively LOL
I've even sold a few of my gold foil legendaries to pay for other cards I needed and have completely switched my focus from collecting, to mastering the game play.
Mastering is a stretch lol
I'm still a student and love learning more about the game each and every day. But it just shows you what happens on our journeys here. I would have never thought at the beginning of this, I would stop playing Call of Duty and fall in love with a card game called Splinterlands.
But here I am....lol
I mean....One can dream right?

You know? That's why I was bummed when they announced finally the Modern and Wild format! I thought they were going to allow separated ECR, but then they decided to use just one. I was counting with that extra-play time!
Everyone has different story.
I am the player first but when I saw the market opportunities I become trader and with rental expansion I am renting out .
With SPS Node license I will be validator too. Staking 200K SPS means it is nice drop of Voucher and SPS generated by stake.
In short my passive income in SL > greater then playing income but I still do play daily.

I just hit 50k SPS staked. I sold a bunch over the year. Might not have been the best decision but I've changed my approach now. And you are right, so many ways to 'play' the game, passive and active.

I think I still collect cards to an extent but I do agree that I didn't know what I was doing at the start. It's too bad you aren't getting so many chests. With a little over a day left, I am at 63 chests for the season.

Honestly I have tried to understand how to play these card games but I still don't understand but I am encouraged to give card games here a a fair trial. Congratulations on your achievement.
It's a strategy game for sure, but quite entertaining once you get it.

I played for about two weeks at the beginning of this year, found it a bit too complicated and realized it'll take a lot of time to learn all the ins and outs, but soon "the winter comes" 😆 and most probably I'll give it another go when I'll have more time available.

Yeah, the new Focus Reward system is better than the one before. Beeing a Silver League Player myself I can get not much more chest out of daily rewards than before, building my CP faster.
I think the real win is the season rewards. And with the upcoming changes, it's going to be a lot easier to stack.

Anyways the focus thingy just gets you hooked, you'd have to play your ass out to fill out those green bars.

The new reward system definitely changed the game dynamics. It seems that my opponent got much stronger lol and I need to play much more often to get my rewards :-)

Great collection of gold foil legendary cards!
In my case, though I have my preferred splinters team if only I have the fund, I just collect cards that are within my budget. Though not my ideal team, I upgrade these low level cards to give me a higher winning rate.
I love that last card. It's invincible! 😆 Imagine with 3 range + 4 melee attacks with 5 speed. Wow! 😁 The best second position card I've seen so far. 😄
Yeah I just timed it right. When I was buying those GFL's they were super cheap compared to what they are now.

I have to admit that since the new focus system that green bar has me hooked too, and even though I had to sell my whole collection twice, I am building again. With the new focus system I'm also a lot more motivated to play the game, because every reward chest is like you say, just 1 or 2 wins away. It's so addictive!

that damn green bar is right. When I see it after winning a battle and I said that was my last battle but the green bar is almost half way full I'm like but dang I should do one more to fill it up again haha I know personally I play A LOT more battles now than before and that's actully a good thing I am becoming a bit more game focused and not caring to much about the $ value even though that still plays in the back of my head long term. When you think about it these splinterland assets still hold massive value compared to before the rally so it's held some decent value in comparison to some of my other assets. Land might shake that up a bit and of course I'm sure there will be another rally at some point and what's awesome is Splinterlands team continues to develop and push forward at all times.

Well, I know enough about Call of Duty to know it is addictive as well, but exchanging your COD time for Splinterlands sounds like a healthy addiction replacement. Plus you are making money playing it.
Splinterlands has become big enough that I am sure there is a Discord for addicts, lol

I was in the position that I started buying a lot of the dice packs shortly before things blew up. That ended up being a good thing for me. Unfortunately, I sold some of the summoners before I should have, but oh well, you live and learn. I am digging the new focus system now. I can't wait to see what happens when more updates start coming out. I think they will get back up to where they were.
