These are the cards that defined each “Edition” of Splinterlands (Alpha) [ES-EN]

Cover created in Canva

I’ve been wanting to write this post—or rather, a series of posts—for quite some time now, focusing specifically on the cards that have defined each of the game’s existing “Editions.” I’m referring to the SETS (Alpha, Beta, Untamed, Chaos Legion, Rebellion, Conclave Arcana, and Escalation). Basically, what I want to capture is how that shift in gameplay occurred and how their abilities have been designed from the very beginning to the present day. However, covering all of this in a single post would be incredibly lengthy, so I’ll have to break it down into several parts.
On the other hand, for each post, I’ll only cover one expansion and two cards that I consider the most representative—though, of course, you might not entirely agree with this, but all of this is based on my own experience. Plus, I’ve been playing the game since it launched in 2018, so I’ve seen all the changes that have taken place over the years from start to finish. That gives me the foundation to choose the cards that the community has discussed the most during different eras, So, with all that in mind, I hope you enjoy this series of posts, especially new players who didn’t have the chance to start back then.
So, to recap, I'll cover all the editions, but I'll start with the oldest one, which is "Alpha." If you have any questions, feel free to comment on this post:

Alpha Edition: Where It All Began in 2018

This set brings back a lot of memories and a sense of nostalgia at the same time; it’s been eight incredible years, and we’re still here. On another note, and to continue, the Alpha Set was the first set released back in May 2018, Also, an interesting fact to note about these cards is that they’re the only ones that were reused exactly as they were—with the same monster artwork—to become the “Beta” edition. This was due to the low initial supply of “Alpha” at the time. Furthermore, these cards are now the hardest to find—first, because of their very limited supply, and second, because, obviously, they’re no longer being printed.
Now that we've covered a bit of "History," it's time to talk about the most iconic cards from that era for the "Alpha" set.

Chromatic Dragon

Reasoning: For me, this is one of the flagship cards of the “Alpha” edition at the time, and because the community was talking a lot about those designs—since it’s a five-headed dragon that I imagine reminded many card game fans of Yu-Gi-Oh!’s “Mythical Dragon.” As a result, many connected with that card because of what it represented at the time, plus, it’s one of the three original “Legendary Dragons” that, along with Gold Dragon and Lightning Dragon, marked a turning point in the game. A legend.
Statistics: This one isn't exactly one of my favorites, but it's a dragon that, at max level, has +5 "Melee" attack, 10 health, and 3 speed, with a mana cost of 7. While it's fairly simple and vulnerable these days, back then it was a card that was hard to defeat.
Abilities: Its set of abilities is quite good, even by today’s standards, but it’s been a long time since I’ve seen any of these abilities on new cards. For example, “Flying,” which is an ability that all dragons in its day had by default. Its other ability is “Enrage,” which, when it is hit, increases its speed and melee attack points by 50%, making it more aggressive. Additionally, it has the “Piercing” ability, which allows its attack to pierce through the shields of other cards, and finally, the “Thorns” ability, which provides some protection since anyone who attacks it physically takes damage from its thorns.

Gold Dragon

Reasoning: This is the second of the three original Alpha Legendary Dragons, so its collectible value is quite high, however, in my opinion, out of the three, he is the most playable in the current META in the Wild format as well as in “Survival,” and this is due to his combination of abilities, which, while very realistic today, remain very strong, since they are abilities that, although old, are still very much in use.
Statistics: This card has a mana cost of 7. The Dragon Trio also has this same cost, although they differ in some ways—for example, its attack type is “Magic,” and at its maximum level, it has +4 attack points, making it a very powerful attack even at this stage of the game. Additionally, it has +9 health and speed points, which is very similar to the Chromatic Dragon.
Abilities: This is where the card really shines, since its abilities are very strong as a whole and work really well together. Plus, as I mentioned, “Flying” is a trait found on all dragons from that era, which gives it a pretty solid layer of defense. Then there’s “Heal,” an ability still widely used in the game that restores the card’s HP every turn. On the other hand, it has “Blast,” one of the most dangerous abilities—at the time, there was no way to counter it, since it also deals damage to adjacent cards—and finally, “Magic Reflect,” which reflects the magical attack back at the opponent.

Final Thoughts

With this, I’ve finished the first part of this series of posts in which I want to talk about the most iconic cards from all the sets. I started with the “Alpha” set and chose the “Chromatic Dragon” and “Gold Dragon” cards, although those who follow me probably know that my favorite card is the “Lightning Dragon.” Even though I could have considered including it, I wanted to be completely transparent about the most iconic cards from that era. Don’t worry—the “Beta” set will be more challenging because there are so many incredible cards, but we’ll see about that later.
Tell me which cards from the “Alpha” set you think we should include here.
See you on the "Battlefield"
