Splinterlands - Summoner's Spell Book Adjustments?

With much anticipation for the upcoming Dec. 8th 2021 opening of Chao Legion packs there is another significant change that maybe overlooked by many. The change is related to the Summoner's Spell book.

Quick overview for those not familiar in order to play 2 earn in splinterlands the bare minimum to invest in the game is to purchasing a Summoner's Spell Book. The asset costs $10 and can be bought in fiat or many most popular cryptocurrencies. The spell book allows players to earn DEC in rank battles, compete in daily quests and tournaments. In addition players can buy and sell cards on the open market.

Beta & Untamed Series

For over a year the spell book has included specifically common and rare summoners and monsters in the beta and untamed series. Players would need to spend additional equity in order to level up those cards or add different series such as alpha, promo and reward cards.

Since the Untamed packs have been sold out for months the long awaited Chao Legions is going to rearrange the cards playable by holders of the spell book. As of now spell book is set to provide owners access to only the latest two series of cards in the game. With the addition of Chaos this will mean all beta common and rare will no longer be accessible to players that only have spell book to play with. In addition any new spell book purchases will only be able to access Untamed and Chaos.

This means (42) beta monster cards and (5) beta summoners will no longer be accessible unless players actually own the cards or rent them from open market.

Snap shot of the beta cards above as over 350k of players who own spell book will no longer have access to play. On the flip side there will be a whole new collection of Chaos cards that will be in Beta's place.

Quantities of Spell Books and Players

Chart above originated from peakmonsters.com and shows that there is a little over 750k spell book purchases. Now not all these accounts rely on the spell book in order to earn, but there is a significant amount that only uses the spell book to earn.

An internal look at all players total holding we can see currently a little under 350k players how any cards in their accounts. This means almost 400k accounts have no cards in their collection and primary way to play and earn in Splinterlands is with the use of the spell book. On the other hand there is delegation and rental market that could fill in the void for some of these accounts as neither the overall spell book players numbers nor the net worth players numbers will show.

Still the bottom line is there are players that will be effected by the release of Chaos even if they have not made any purchases after the spell book. This has its benefits and consequences but its just one element of the game I like to point out so people are aware. In my opinion this is more positive than negative as players get an update on new cards to play while leaving legacy cards. On the flip side legacy cards are that much more scarce now and will likely benefit with price appreciation down the road.
