If you're playing Splinterlands you know that they rocked Hive this week with their announcement of laying off almost half of their staff. But this post is not about their latest news but about old news. Their September 15 release of the

Riftwatcher

Edition of Splinterlands cards. To be honest, I was not a big fan of yet another card edition (and then another, and another) but I guess that is how you have to play this game, a trading card game, right? Always bringing something new and fresh to the market to keep the audience engaged.

The price tag of these card packs is pretty steep. I started this game when Untamed packs were still available and they cost $2.00, the Dice mini edition packs were $3.00. Now you can get the currently available Chaos Legion packs for $4.00. Riftwatcher packs are more expensive still at $5.00, plus you will also have to throw in a voucher. Will the next pack edition be $6? You'll figure it out... I guess all I'm saying is - they're not cheap.

But they're great cards and I still like the game. So it came as no surprise that eventually my addiction to opening another pack a.k.a. loot box got the better of me and

I caved in on October 1

I bought 11 packs. Why 11? I have no idea. Hey, I'm old and this was over a month ago 😁. I opened them all and got gold foils and legendaries and epics and, truthfully, almost none of that. I did get two common gold foils and a few rares but no epics or legendaries. Oh well, we can't always be that lucky.

Earlier today I read a post on noise.app by someone opening a Riftwatcher pack and I thought hmm, wouldn't it be nice to get a few more Riftwatcher cards myself as well? Since I'm pretty much a do-er that's exactly what I did.

Or wanted to because first I needed to get more liquid SPS which is the only accepted currency for Riftwatcher gems. Thankfully, its price wasn't too bad so I bought a few hundred SPS and settled on getting another five packs. And then

I opened one Riftwatcher gems

For only one pack I think that haul is actually pretty good. I mean two rares and a gold foil? And a Whelp Herder that costs only three mana while most or all (?) other Riftwatchers are pretty high mana cards. I'm very happy with this opening.

Though, was it smart to buy and open the pack(s)? Probably not when I look at my Riftwatcher cards' value on Peakmonsters - a meager $22.36 @ list price or $21.61 @ market price. I think I need to work harder on my pack-opening-addiction and

All in all, these are all my Riftwatcher cards. There is a lot missing from the set so maybe... maybe I should open another pack! Aaaaaarghhhh!!!!
