Splinterlands Water Nymph Fan Art

It's time to post my very first piece of art here! While I am not a player of Splinterlands, it is a big part of the HIVE community and I can really appreciate the effort of the art and the lore behind the characters.

When I saw the Water Nymph, inspiration struck and I put my stylus on my screen and here is the process. (iPad Gen 8, Apple Pencil Gen 1 and Procreate if you were wondering 😉)

water_nymph_process_01.png

I found a wonderful reference photo on Unsplash by Engin Akyurt. He has a number of wonderful underwater shots. You can see the original photo here:

I started by making a rough sketch using the reference photo.

water_nymph_process_02.png

Once I have a basic rough sketch, I started adding the details. In this case, changing the hair to be more appealing, and clothing the Water Nymph in her iconic uniform. Then I added the concept for the background. The next step is the basic line art. While I was doing the line art, I caught a few details that I had missed in the sketch phase, like the gauntlet. I added that in the first line art phase.

Once the basic line art is done, I started adding more life to the line art, by adding weight to certain lines. The next step is adding the flat colours. I used the original Splinterlands Water Nymph art to establish the basic colour pallet.

Then the real fun starts. This is the step that I probably enjoy the most. (Although it can also sometimes be the one that frustrates me the most!) Shading! When shading starts, it is when the piece starts to get some life.

Art Tip: Before you start shading, always keep in mind where your light source is, and how it will affect your subject matter.

water_nymph_process_04.png

While I did have an initial concept in mind for the background, when I began playing around with different brushes in Procreate, the concept ended up changing. And that is okay! I didn't like the initial concept when I started painting it out, because it just felt like it detracted from the Water Nymph. So I dropped the underwater plants and rocks and focused more on the water itself.

The water surface brush is a standard brush that comes with Procreate. The light beam I created using a free brush by Attki. You can find it here:
Free Light Particles Brushpack! by Attki
And the bubbles come from a Photoshop brush on Brusheezy I modified.

Water Bubble Brushes

While brushes can help in creativity, in the end, it does come down to how you make use of them. Though they can really help if you don't want to spend hours and hours drawing every single bubble. I did consider doing so, but let's face it, this post would have only happened several weeks from now if I had. And the bubbles are only a supporting element, not the main focus.

So now it's looking pretty good, but it's still missing a few last touches. A bit of a gradient difference in the water, because if you have ever been underwater, it is something you will notice. I pictured this Water Nymph in beautiful coastal waters with light beach sand on the bottom.

After that, all that was left was to sign and add the date. So there you have it, my @splinterlands Water Nymph inspired Fan Art. I'll be entering this into the weekly art contest. Hold thumbs for me 😅
Splinterlands Art Contest Week 187!

And thank you so much for reading this post and viewing my art!

Whoever is directly controlling the V2K told me to kill myself.
They told me if I killed myself now it would save the lives of countless others.
Saying the longer I wait to kill myself the more people will suffer.

They are reckless and should have shown the proper media what they had before taking me hostage for 5 years. I know there are many in prison that dont deserve to be there because of this. Your stay in prison will not be fun @battleaxe and friends. People are going to want you dead when they find out what you did. I hope you die a slow painful death. You sick mother fuckers.

Its a terrorist act on American soil while some say its not real or Im a mental case. Many know its real. This is an ignored detrimental to humanity domestic and foreign threat. Ask informed soldiers in the American military what their oath is and tell them about the day you asked me why. Nobody has I guess. Maybe someone told ill informed soldiers they cant protect America from military leaders in control with ill intent. How do we protect locked up soldiers from telling the truth?

Hi @pixelhuntersam! I had been waiting for your first artwork. That's cool, I liked the pose. And what I like the most is the hair.

I would have liked it if you did the underwater plants. I don't think they would have detracted from the emphasis on the water nymph.

I hope you post a drawing again soon! 🤓

Thank you! I really did have fun with the hair.
Maybe it would have looked good with the plants in the end, but I just wasn't feeling it at that moment. I dunno, sometimes my so-called art sense is fickle at best. I tried doing the plants a few ways and ended up hating them, so I gave up and went in a different direction 😅

I hope to post some art again soon. Aiming to post some art at least once a week. But sometimes life doesn't work out that way. I guess we will just have to see how it goes. 😉

Hahahaha I understand that! Sometimes it's stressful to draw because things don't fit the way you want them to.

Hopefully you can post weekly like you want to. Although life sometimes doesn't have the same plans as you do. I wanted to post three drawings a week and now I barely have time to post one, so I know what you mean hahaha.

Absolutely awsome.

I don't know why, but i have a hard time to see if the water surface goed down to a horizon or if it extends up outside of the picture.

Hi @groentje thanks so much for the vote and follow!
In all honesty, I was trying to have the water surface fade into a blur as it extends further into the background. I admit I am actually not very good with backgrounds, and I probably need to be more patient when I paint them. 😅

No, don't worrie about it it's like a wierd illusion. It's the backgroud after all, don't put all the effort in it.

Thank you @zakludick. You have no idea how much all the encouragement and support means! Hopefully, I will be able to continue developing my art. Heck knows I haven't settled into a singular style or process. So having a record should prove quite interesting in the long run!

Indeed. And you could even make mosts later on where you compile and track these styles and art evolutions!

WOW! WOW! WOW! This looks amazing! The process sounds as painstaking as doing everything by hand - not that I know anything about either if I'm honest!

I guess @zakludick and other friends who are writing stories would love to collaborate with some art for each post, or at least a first chapter every now and then?

Indeed we would! Read some of my stories @pixelhuntersam, you are welcome to do art for any of them as you wish!

Yes, I am known for drawing fanart. I have done a few pieces for the book @lex-zaiya published. It can be quite fun to draw. And I do enjoy reading as well. Though I don't read as much as I'd like to. Life tends to distract me a lot (As does my husband, haha).

@Pixelhuntersam please don't get disheartened (and I will remember to take my own advice). Starting out here and even staying here on Ecency can sometimes be tough on the nerves and it's hard to stay motivated. You are clearly phenomenally talented. Consistency is key. Which means try, try and try again. I am an artist myself (A musician) and I completely relate to how it feels when you put your artwork out and it doesn't get the response you hoped for. People are weird. The thing you think is amazing, may not do well commercially and then something arbitrary you do will do brilliantly. I mean, that's not always the case, but we can't always predict these things. Find your tribe, grow your support and go give support to other artists and groups who have the same goals and interests as you, as you have done so well already. Please feel free to tag me in all your posts. I'd love to continue to support you and I don't want to miss one 💕
