Splinterlands Challenge of the Week:Scavenger Cheek Challenge

(Edited)

This week's Splinterlands Challenge of the Week was to showcase the Scavenge ability.

I decided to try and cheek this one out by allowing a scavenge a monster, in this case the Cave Slug, to do most of the work in this week's challenge battle.

As with many scavengers the slug is an opportunity monster, picking up Scavenge at level 6, by which point he has middling damage and health, so not a bad card.

His weakness: he is slow, which means.... save him for the SLOW ruleset as I do below!

The battle below features the scavenging slug dealing the majority of the damage:

The Rule Set and Line Up

  • Mana 25
  • No neutrals
  • Slow - so perfect for the slug!

Summoner - Chanseus

  1. Crystal Werewolf - quite a nice front row monster for lowish mana battles with life. I was hoping for a no attack monster up front, but didn't get it! Also silence can really help when you're playing the Shieldbearer!
  2. Shieldbearer - hoping for no or low magic attacks I wanted this to soak up most the damage with repair and triage helping while the scavenger wreaks havoc
  3. Armourer - for repair
  4. The Slug - great choice for a slow ruleset!

Did my strategy work?

Well yes, but probably more because I was overpowered compared to my opponent!

  • Round 1 - The slug start off by taking out shields on the Assassins, but OUCH the poor old wolf at the front takes a battering.
  • Round 2 - the slug take out the Silvershield Assassins (these are a hard card to win with, I've found!), the Wolf dies, but gets resurrected. The Shieldbearer is doing a nice job soaking up alll those ranged attacks!
  • Round 3 - The Wolf dies again, I'm having no impact on the Golem at all so far!
  • Round 4 - The Shieldbearer's now in front, double repair and shield working wonders, and only 1 magic damage getting through every round - I got this!
  • Round 5 - The cave slug take out the Herbalist
  • Rounds 6-7 - we exchange blows, no losses
  • Round 8 - Truthspeaker goes down, along with shields
  • Round 10 - FINALLY, the slug gets the Divine Healer, now I'm set!
  • Round 11 - Now the Shieldbearer can actually do some lasting damage with no healing, and the Golem goes down, it's all over!
  • Round 13 - The Evangelist goes down....and the scavenger ends with 13 health points!

How important was the slug?

Absolutely ESSENTIAL, having done MOST of the damage in the battle.

HOWEVER, I got a bit lucky - had my opponent played one repair card, that would have nullified all my attacks as the Slug would have just kept bouncing off shields!

I should have thought out my shields strategy at the front a bit better!

Final Thoughts: Cave Slug - Worth Buying?

I wouldn't call the Slug the most essential monster for the life splinter, but he can be a real life saver (excuse the pun) when you're stuck with a slow rule set and a limited choice of splinters - the only other option i had here was death, and they tend to have a lot of fast monsters (which is counter intuitive, but there you go!)

So the slug wouldn't be a priority for me when building a life deck, I think all the other cards I play have more utility, BUT for slow, he's a great addition!

If you don't yet play Splinterlands, why not give it a go?
